Actually haven't played FS2 at all yet. As with all the games in my backlog: someday.

It's got the best dogfighting of any space combat game ever. It's more arcadey than realistic, but seriously fun. There's actually a lot of depth to the gameplay as you have great control over your wingmen, and missions are typically more complex than "destroy everything". For example, you may have to capture a capship by knocking out its engines rather than killing it outright. Battles against capships are epic because they're huge, lethal and difficult to destroy. Your team needs to work together to fight one, e.g. your fighter wing knocks out the capship's turrets and missile launchers while providing cover for the bombers. Or you could fly the bombers yourself.

The best thing is the moddability. The source code was released years ago. As a result, the community has seriously updated the graphics and created loads of custom campaigns. They've even ported over the original freespace game and its expansion. Go to this site: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/ind...?topic=78710.0 to get started. There's some really impressive stuff out there.

unclear, they aren't on the site anymore (maybe they are out?)

I got the Squadron 42 one and it is extremely nice material for a t-shirt, def get one if they become available again

i ended up downloading the battlestar galactica version (even though I generally hate games based on tv shows like that). is this basically the best version for graphics/multiplayer gameplay?

all i care about is graphics/multiplayer gameplay! will never play single player ever ever ever except to get the controls under...control.

Well that's actually a total conversion. I played it a bit, it's pretty different from the normal game. Different ships, guns, missiles etc. not as much variety. I dunno how big the multiplayer scene is. You're really missing out if you don't play some of the single player campaigns.

The single player campaigns are pretty epic iirc and that was just normal Freespace 2, I'm sure the mods are insane.

how does freespace 2 hold up graphics wise since its 13 years old?
or is it a matter of just download mods?

Freespace 2 had megaelite graphics when it was released and holds up decently. The constant upgrading of graphics etc by the open source code modders has kept it decently up to date, especially since there are 0 games in the same genre since that have been noticable improvements.

Also cap ships fighting with beams is one of the coolest things in any game or genre I have ever seen.

no cockpit in freespace 2 without mods or is that just a camera view?

you'd prefer obstructed views like the old days?

Yup. But like Reid says, they take up too much of the screen.

I prefer this, by far, to any cockpit less view.

The whole point was that that ship had more monitors and was a crappy starting ship. When you got enough money to buy the best ship in Privateer, the Centurion, the view was much less obstructed because it was a fighter, not a merchant ship like the Tarsus pictured.

It's flavor.

What's the best value for jumping into the crowd funding, presently?

Hard to say since no one really has any idea how good any of the ships actually are.

The daily donations for the last week.. they're at 15 million and still getting like 50k a day. Insane.

I have this overwhelming desire to buy additional ships.

Kinda crazy considering the game won't be out for at least another year plus, and the ships are all buyable in game. All the upgrades you add won't be covered by LTI either, so it's a fools task to collect them all.

If only the combat in the X games was better. We'd be in best games ever territory. Glad to read that they're finally improving the clunky interface.

Hangar module is out.

You can walk around and get in your ships if you pledged.

That is if you can download it. I've been trying for over 2 hours and it just sitts there timing out

I finally got everything downloaded and such, however I can't login to the hangar module as it keeps timing out.

There is apparently a patch coming out today. Lots of issues going around.
