Bluegrass, it is an entirely new universe. No Kilrathi, or anything from Wing Commander. I'm sure Chris would love to make a sequel but EA owns all the IP related to it, and needless to say they're a bunch of **** ******* **********. So no WC

Dunno if it's a great idea to have an FPS element as well. Tacked on gameplay elements tend to be rubbish.

I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't make it into the final game, but we'll see. It's absurdly ambitious as is.

Yeah i agree. No need for the fps element. Thats not at all what these games are about. Not only would the fps elements probably be bad but it probably sacrifices quite a bit of plot to get the hero into an fps scenario.

I wonder what the backlash would be like against Kickstarter funded games if they don't deliver on their stretch goals? Shudder to think.

Isn't that the point to? The developers try to figure out the cost of delivering the product they envision and then set that as the group funds goal. How do the developers benefit by underestimating this number?

It's hardly unprecedented for a game's development to go over budget. A hugely ambitious game like star citizen is particularly likely to run into problems. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the currently promised features don't make it into the final game or end up being half-arsed.

Yep and IT/ programming projects so rarely go over budget.

Wing Commander games are all on sale this weekend at gog.com, are any of them recent enough to have graphics that don't blow? Would they hold up well? Usually I can deal with oldish graphics but I have to imagine space combat is a genre where it matters more than others.

You're better off getting wing commander saga, a free game. It's based on the Freespace 2 engine but the graphics have been seriously updated. Truth is that the gameplay in the wing commander games was never that great; the mission design is quite repetitive and combat felt a little too arcadey. The FS2 engine provides for much better combat.

In fact, if you're looking for a space combat fix, your best bet is to buy FS2 from gog and then install the source code project and mediavp mods from hardlight.net. The game's devs released the source code a few years ago so the community has been able to update the graphics and engine to a remarkable degree. There are some excellent custom campaigns out there - Blue Planet is superb.

I mean, I loved these games as a kid (and still do), so it's hard for me to say whether or not the graphics are awful because they all seem sweet to me.

Basically WC 1/2/Privateer are earlier graphics, while WC 3/4 have better graphics and live action video (lol). It doesn't matter as much as you think it does, but don't go in expecting something incredible, even the latter two games are still roughly 20 years old. WC3 probably the best one for you to try, IMO. It's the best overall game of the series and while you'd miss some plot, it's not a big deal.

I disagree with all of this. The mods aren't bad, but they are nowhere near the real games. Also to say the gameplay in WC sucked is pretty absurd and wrong. These are early 1990's video games, of course they have somewhat of an "arcadey" feel and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Some of the FS2 campaigns like Blue Planet, Derelict, ST: Reborn, Transcend plus many others are easily as good or better than the official campaigns.

You really don't think there's anything wrong with gameplay which consists of "fly to waypoint. Kill everything. Fly to next waypoint. Repeat"? Because that's what nearly every single WC mission was like. X-Wing/Tie-Fighter were also 90s space combat games but had more complex mission design.

How was X-Wing any different? Tie Fighter was later and more advanced and the greatest space combat game of all time, so I'll give you that one.

Basically you have escort missions, patrol missions, and assault missions in each game. I fail to see how X-Wing was "more sophisticated" than WC3. It's unfair to compare it to WC1/2 because they were released a couple years earlier and are the reasons X-Wing even existed. Plus technology improved, etc.

I love all of these games mentioned, but they each have strengths and weaknesses. WC games have BY FAR better plot and story, for instance, than the X-Wing games.

Basic point is that the WC games are seriously dated and probably won't be that much fun to a contemporary gamer. FS2 mods are the way to go if you want fun space combat. Maybe even Freelancer mods although I haven't tried that yet.

I agree about the superior storytelling though; it's why I always enjoyed WC more than the star wars games. They were very good at immersing you in the game world while centering the story around you. Wandering around your capital ship and talking to people was one of the best parts.

Just got done playing WC 1 and 2 for old times sake.

Take my advice. Don't replay them - at least, not for gameplay reasons.

The story holds up - and the WC2 story is exceptional for 1991. The gameplay - not so much. It's more like fighting with the controls in a constant effort to get your ship to do what you want it to do. Certain missions are so overtuned and the odds so stacked against you that the strategy for success evolves into playing it 20 times, hope you get lucky. The programmers obviously knew this, because for many many of the missions (especially in WC2), you are allowed to progress the story with no penalty if you lose and eject. The campaign continues as though you had won.

Gonna give 3 and 4 a try now. =D

What missions? They only mission in the entirety of WC2 that I can think of as being really hard is the last mission of SO1 (lolSabre vs. 5 Gothri and 2 AMG-happy Fralthra).

WC1 has the Ralari mission (which is beatable if you know what you are doing) and a few hard missions in the SMs but nothing unbeatable.

I always thought that WC2 had the most adult story lines. Not every Kilrathi is evil, the traitor was a human with a reason to hate the hero/confed. While WC3 felt like it was written by a 12 year old. Super weapon is used to destroy the Kilrathi planet, what happened to the Kilrathi rebels? Hobbes being the traitor WTF no.
