Wing Commander 1-4 (there was a 5th that was slightly different and not made by Chris Roberts) were based on fairly linear story lines. The cool thing, though, was that if you did well or did poorly, your missions would change. The game branched into different missions. WC 3/4 had live action video and (especially WC4) were almost movies that had gameplay put in as opposed to games with movies in them. The actual gameplay itself was probably similar to Freelancer (although you were in the cockpit, not 3rd person like Freelancer--yes I know you had the option to switch it in Freelancer, but that wasn't how the game was designed) except not as open.
Oh, and real men used joysticks, not the ****ing mouse. This is very important.
There was also Wing Commander: Privateer, which was basically the earlier version of Freelancer, set in the WC universe. That was WC's gameplay set in an open world where you upgraded your ship, etc. with a storyline thrown in that was pretty meh. Still an awesome game though, obv.
