I thought I killed Lady Butterfly first try and thought I was all badass. Then I was wrong.

I started a text file to track all the paths I've left dangling so I don't forget anything, which are currently (past a few bosses but I don't think I'm terribly far):

Spoiler:
- Lady Butterfly
- Seven Spears
- Headless
- Ashina Elite (lol this guy shreds me and I can't touch him)
- Sunken Valley (the one non-boss path I've yet to explore at the moment. guess I'm going there next!)
- Genichiro
- whoever the guy is that shows up at the place where you started the game

I am at the following bosses/mini bosses...I need 2 more prayer beads to bump up the 4th time... I may try to find them before facing a couple of these.

Spoiler:

7 spears - struggling way too much with this one even with the first stealth hit. I'm not good at the mikiri counter so I'll have to find another way to do it

Long Arm Centipede - I know what to do on this one I think using the umbrella or attempting to block all 10 attacks in a row which is doubtful

Genichiro - probably not going to try him until I get 2 more prayer beads being one of the hardest bosses in the game

Snake Eyes Shirahagi - I don't think I am supposed to be here yet so I'll come back lol
I had way more trouble vs. 7 Spears than Genichiro. I think I just have a problem with spears.
Spoiler:
#1 Press the stick towards him and hit the button to counter. If you hit any direction but towards the enemy it won't work. Once I learned this it was easy.

#2 Firecrackers are your friend. I died way too much to him just being a moron.

#3 Stay close and deflect a lot. Block immediately when he jumps. Mikiri counter is really good. I got stuck here for close to 100 attempts because I'm bad.

^ FMP above. That's 7 bosses I could go fight right now and, I believe, no areas I can explore until I kill one of them.

I think I enjoy this style of game less than DS. Remember slogging through an area of normal enemies for awhile, trying desperately to get to that next bonfire that you're sure is around the next corner? Feels totally absent from this game. Bonfires are everywhere, seemingly to give you a good place to rest up for the boss fights you encounter every 5 minutes that will kill you 20 times each.

Why am I even trying, I can't get him below half of his first health bar let alone get to this part

Agreed. I definitely enjoy this less than DS games.

When you do a Mikiri Counter, are you able to attack immediately, or is it only just to stop their attack and increase their posture? So for example a boss does a power attack you can't block, but you can stop with a Mikiri Counter. Are you able to attack immediately after doing the move or do you need to just be prepared to block/defect/dodge their next move? I've done it a couple of times and it's like it pushes them backwards when stopping their attack.

You have to stand there like an idiot for a beat. It doesn't do any physical damage. When the animation lets you move again you just continue the fight like normal.

The best way to mikiri is to push the stick towards the enemy as you hit the button. The stick needs to be forward or neutral. If yoh push any other direction it won't work.

Figured out a moderately cheesy way to kill this guy:

Spoiler:
His attacks are too fast for me to have a hope of parrying, but since he's pretty consistent about slowly walking towards you and then attacking once he's in range, you can just repeatedly use mist raven to teleport behind him when he attacks. His posture seems pretty weak compared to most bosses so you can break him pretty easily.

Okay

Spoiler:
On attempt number, approximately, 35, I finally dealt Genichiro two deathblows

AND THE ****ING FIGHT ISN'T OVER WHAT THE ****

AND THEN WHEN I OBVIOUSLY DIE TO THE LIGHTNING EDITION IT'S NOT EVEN LIKE I CAN START ON THE SECOND PHASE AFTER DYING, I HAVE TO DO THE WHOLE ****ING THING OVER AGAIN

**** THIS GAME

Without looking at an online guide to make sure I didn't miss stuff, I would have missed 3 gourd seeds. This game is too punishing to miss stuff like that.

The goofyballer guide to defeating Genichiro:

Spoiler:
Attack. Always. Get up in his face and attack. Repeatedly. Don't stop. With like one or two exceptions (read on!).

It seems like he'll generally block two of your attacks, then decide what to do next, which might be:
- nothing (keep attacking! break that posture!)
- try to slash you back
- do one of a couple special moves

If he slashes you back, ignore him. They'll hit you sometimes but they don't do a lot of damage.

If he jumps back and makes a little space, guard, immediately. He's going to jump and shoot a bunch of arrows at you. Just block them.

If he starts an unguardable move, depending on which health bar you're on, it's always the same move:
- health bar 1: it's a thrust, do mikiri counter
- health bar 2: it's a sweep, do the double jump

If he starts this slow animation where he kinda goes in a half circle and turns towards you and starts swinging, you can't stop that animation, but you can get several free slashes in before the actual attacks begin. Once he does just back off until he's done, then get back in and keep attacking.

For both of the first two health bars, this is a pretty reliable way to posture break him.

Once you get to the third bar...good luck. I got lucky with the attacks he did on me and got like three mikiri counters in a short amount of time, and only had to dodge one lightning attack.

The goofyballer guide to killing the lone longswordsman (extreme cheese inside):

Spoiler:
Jump from above to take his first health bar.

Retreat into the cave. Jump up on the ledge. Wait for him to follow you, swing a couple times, jump back down.

From the bottom, swing away, don't stop. He will generally try a bunch of attacks from the ledge above, and they CAN hit you, just back off a little, but otherwise keep attacking; you can hit him from below much easier than he can hit you from above. If he jumps down to join you below, jump back up and repeat.

Took down the seven Spears and ashina elite last night, got to Genichiro and noped out of there pretty quickly.

Did some backtracking and found a spot before the castle that I had completely missed as well as some new things to do in the moat, ended up with a couple more gourd seeds and a new esoteric text which is nice.

Next up is Genichiro and that jerk who shoots terror orbs at you. Need one more bead for the next vitality boost, probably should get that before making a serious run at Genichiro.

An hour or so in and im ****ing loving this game

It feels like it really encourages a unique playstyle and not just the sword and board souls style (or even god of war is like that too)

I legit feel like a ninja. Not a huge fan of xp loss and cant quite figure out how that works. I like how items glow, I got super irritated with how many items i missed in souls.

Its awesome. You lose half your gold and experience per death. Definitely want to buy bags of gold when you can to preserve it.

I feel like I need to take an evening and just grind mobs so I can buy out the vendors before I go too much further

This game doesn't naturally shower you in items and $$$, which is different I suppose. But not necessarily bad.

I mean when is it supposed to be unforgiving? I downed 3/4 bosses or whatever drop those items in the starting area. A general, an ogre, and another general i think. Only one to give me a legit challenge was the shinobi hunter until i figured out how to counter thrust attacks.

Last prayer bead is the drunk guy. Doesnt seem that bad.

Did some grinding in hirata and learned like the entire first skill tree already, the shenobi one. The one that lets you heal when you DB is badass. Doesnt seem to be a downside to just grinding some skills if you need to and it let me figure out the combat system a little better in the meantime

This game feels like it was made for me, i come from a solid fighting game background and the timing for parrying and punishing attacks is really easy so far. I know its probably gonna get a lot harder
