placement match for new season means nothing, you will just get placed in what your MMR was last season. thats why you can get extreme demotions/promotions.

know several people who have lost their placements and gotten masters

I don't mind losing my placement (top gold / avg plat) but i just went 7-0 in silver and feel kinda bad.

so when you get placed in a new season you can obv move up or down? or do you most likely get placed in same level as before?

It's not quite that simple. Your league doesn't have any influence on who you play. It's more likely that it's either: you've improved, you lost some games before the season or lol sample size.

Depends on a lot of things. That question is answered differently for everyone. But if you play enough games and check who you play against you can have a pretty good idea of where you will get placed.

I was platinum before the lock, got placed into platinum again.

I know someone who was in silver during the lock and placed into Gold during their placement.

You should have an idea of where you're going to end up depending on who you were playing against before the new season started. For example, I was in Platinum playing against Platinums. It wasn't matching me up against Diamonds. However, if you're in silver and you have been playing golds and some platinums (and winning), then there is a high chance you're going to get bumped up.

Last season I was in Diamond and got placed in Plat. This season I was in Diamond and got placed in Diamond. Just because the ladder locks doesn't mean your MMR does too. That is always moving, and that's what determines where you go. It's not unheard of (or even uncommon) for someone to play enough during the ladder lock that they would have gotten a promotion had it not been locked. So, when the new season comes around, they finally get it because that's where their MMR has been.

How did you guys pick your race you play?

I picked mine because I always played zerg in BW, having a very mapcontrol/expand-behind-that style with mutalisks or lots of lurkers. However, they removed two of my favorite units, the lurker and the hydra (effectively, not literally for the hydra).
I still picked zerg in the beginning up until now, but I'm not so sure anymore. I haven't really tried an infestor-heavy style yet, and that might be the saving grace if I really enjoy that, but for the rest my fave units (lurker, hydralisk, ultralisk, mutalisk) are all either removed, effectively removed or underused/underpowered.

How did you guys choose your races to play?
- Was it based on the race you played in BW, which didn't really change their playstyle from what you liked.
- Is it a unit you really like, like destiny has his infestors, or that you just really like to plop down forcefields or throw some storms, or just run around drugged up with your marines.
- Or is it some general playstyle, like lots of drops or w/e that made you choose your race?

Up until now I played zerg, but heavily consider switching. What's the best way to try out what I like most? Just play all 3 a lot in ladder matches with all kind of different builds, or is there a more time-effective way?

I played Terran originally at release (because of the campaign mostly), but I switched to Zerg because it seemed like a lot more fun. This was at the time where it was almost all 1base all ins, which just didn't appeal to me at all. Plus, I think Zerg has the most "cute" tactics (like burrowed banes, etc), and I love playing with those. I'm actually off-racing as Terran on another account right now because I think Terran has almost as much stuff to do as Zerg (though I hate that when I'm playing Zerg lol).

I can't really think of a faster way to try it out than just play some games. I think if you don't like it, you'll find out a lot faster, so it won't consume too much time if that turns out to be the case.

I started as terran because I've played campaign and it seemed easier, switched to zerg quite fast.

Playstyle just seemed cooler with the larva and stuff, cooler units (especially ultras), and this was at the time where zerg was considered the weakest race (with the mass reaper etc)
Playstyle of maxing and instantly remaxing appealed to me, also i'm more of a passive player and at the time zerg was definitly the most macro-oriented.

edit: woops

for training on other races, just play ladder 1v1 man, i mean who gives a **** about ladder points and ranking anyway, Sure you're maybe gonna go down a league or two but who gives a **** honestly

i play protoss as that's what i played in brood war

I picked Protoss because:

1. I didn't like the idea of Zerg being insect looking aliens.
2. Terran was too much of the human/patriotic normalcy that I've always been used to in movies/games/life and wanted to try something different.

and so I picked Protoss and stuck with it.

BTW, anyone ever notice that the Starcraft races resemble those from the movie Alien vs Predator?

Alien - Zerg
Predator - Protoss
Scientists - Terran

Played Zerg in SC. Then after getting raped by medics in BW I finally made the switch and ended up loving tanks before they were used extensively. M&M really just pissed me off so much early on in BW. So I stuck with Terran into SC2 for season one. Then made the switch to random for no reason really.

I really don't like playing Toss though. I'm considering just leaving games I roll toss.

I probably picked zerg because I tend to go for quantity > quality in pretty much any game I play. As joey s. once said, quantity has a quality all its own.

And banelings are ****in amazing.

People from TL are trying to get Day9 nominated to speak at the TED conference.

Apparently TED emailed Day9 and told him they are getting flooded with requests and Day9 asked everyone to stop because only 1 person needs to nominate him. haha

If you don't know what TED is then,

Seeing Day 9 on a TED talk would be neat. I wonder what topic he'd discuss (besides how awesome and complex SC2 is).

And I picked protoss because it is the shiniest.

I don't seem to have a high enough upload rate to stream decently, so I was thinking about just recording fpvods and uploading /w possible commentary. Wondering what programs people recommend for such a thing?
