i did this at around the same time i would buy UO gold for IRL $$ (10/1million usually), then take that gold to in-game auctions and buy items there (auction prices were deflated) and then flip the items for cash on ebay for an enormous profit. pocket a piece of that $$ and take the remainder to buy more gold and rinse and repeat. if i could sell the in-game item for like 8-9 mil gold but only $70 on ebay, i preferred to do that and then reuse the gold or sell some of it back to the gold sellers.
there were ways to make the $$, you just had to be very smart about where and when you converted the in-game equity to IRL cash.
on the flip side, i'd also buy items on ebay if the auction was going cheap and i knew the current in-game price was higher when converted to IRL equity. it was quite the business, and origin had essentially stopped caring about IRL trades for $$/items. they even endorsed it at one point (as any smart non-WoW-size mmo should).
of course, this was all when i was 16. at age 18 i discovered online poker and **** anything else for making money for the next 7 years.
