as you get promoted, you get put in a new division since most of the existing ones will already be filled (unless someone gets demoted, if thats possible?). so your new silver division will contain a lot of ppl promoted from bronze or directly placed in silver - since you have existing pts from bronze, thats why you're near the top already

Any idea when new maps will come into the ladder cycle? I love the maps currently, I just was hoping they would begin to introduce some more to add variety and some new dynamics.

I'm not up to date with how stuff like that works (are there new maps per season?), but it seems like it would be a nice way to look at how balances worked if they introduced maps as sort of control groups or something to test balance specific issues.

/dumbidea

On a less stupid idea note, I'm now at close to 1100 points in my bronze league (71-58 record, name Urinedanger). How do you tell when you're going to be promoted to silver, if ever? Is it totally random?

Thanks!

after your games, check your opponent's profile. when you start to play a lot of silver division players you will probably be promoted soon if you can win some games vs them.

Right now I'm playing SC2 and Civ5. It is just amazing the difference between the two. Obviously totally different games, but in the level of polish, balance, AI, just the quality of the game.
Civ 5 multiplayer is a trainwreck. The single player has so many broken exploitable things its amazing.
SC2 I find I really enjoy watching Day9 and Trump, thinking about the game while not playing. With Civ5 not even remotely.
For two games I've really been waiting a long time for, the difference is just shocking.

gg Blizzard.

anyone who thinks sc2 is not polished come and play civ5 and then tell me what you think.

That's not to say sc2 may not have a few balance issues, but civ5 needs rewrites of entire facets of gameplay.

ppl expect sc2 to live up to sc1, not other rts's which are all crap in comparison.

Yeah, because people know the SC1 that was tweaked, refined, upgraded, explored and toned over a 12-year period. They don't remember SC1 year 1. SC2 is a masterpiece in gaming. Achieving the balance they have now (stfu zerg) is really an amazing feat with such different races.

No, you're right: the balance with SC2 is extraordinarily good for a first cut. It's easy to forget the ridiculous exploits that other games like civ have.

In the SC1 release, if you weren't Z, you weren't winning. Lulz at remembering the 150 mineral spawning pool, cannons that did 1/2 damage to mutas/light units, and hatcheries that produced larvae at double the rate they do currently.

A friend of mine just rage-uninstalled SC2 bitching about ZvT imbalance. He is a Gold level player. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: "Wow you really uninstall?"
Him: "Yeah ****ing bull****. I don't mind having to be better to win, but I have to be SO much better."
Me: "Did you watch Cool beat LiveForever?"
Him: "That's helpful because my APM is obviously as high as Cool"

I just gave up after that. I don't people that whine about the imbalance at low levels. I know that there's definitely an edge for T in the matchup, but probably up until 1000 diamond you can watch the replay of the Z player and pick out a big leak or two that has nothing to do with APM/micro or actual imbalance. It's just basic things like scouting, expanding at good times, picking good positions to attack/defend, unit composition, getting supply blocked, etc.

Just had a wierd game in 4v4 placements

I fast expo'd with protoss then obv I was focused first and got no army then my other mate left and I transfered all my resources (like 2k/1k) to my 4th mate who was a protoss aswell.
Then he built stargetes & beacon then some carriers obv they focused him aswell and he ragequit. Then my other mate left aswell so I was alone against 3 guys (1 guy dc'd or something from other team aswell).
So I was playing with our first left mate's units and I was like 8k / 4k minerals... and they thought I left aswell and they were will clearing my mates buildings..etc leftover.
I built 6 stargates and a beacon with the shared team and then a mothership and like 20 carriers I was like oh I can win now with like 160 interceptors in my pack. So I went to the zerg base with this little army and like 1shot his ~50hydras army then killed terran aswell but boom I got a screen "You were dropped"......

Now I'm like FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU

But at the end it was funny for sure.
Damn it would be so awesome if I don't get a dc and win it ..

You see this in every game, and every facet of life really. Some people just want to find something to blame other then their own abilities. I don't think a bit of whining, even at lower levels is really that bad, but rage /uninstalling and blaming the balance @ gold level for quitting is ridiculous.

Perhaps I am alone in this, but I am actually finding PvZ to be my worst matchup. If I can't shut them down early on, or at least cripple the player (or they try to 6 pool or something), I just can't keep up with the macro / tech switching / counter attacks / muta harass / etc etc that Zerg can bring to the table.

Blizzard should do something at 4v4 placements it's ridic. Lost 4 of 5 because like half team dc'd/left etc, was in top5 at least all games and then I get placed to bronze FFFFF------

Also when I had 3 full new guys in my team and other team had like 2 diamonds and 2 golds we were Slightly Favored
I was like oh lol

I'm ~1150 diamond and TvZ is my worst matchup statistically. According to SC2 gears my winrate TvZ is 54% vs 56% and 59% for TvT and TvP respectively.

But, as you said, its a lot easier for some people to blame their awfulness on balance or some external factor outside their control than to try and evaluate something they are doing wrong. I think we are all familiar with this kind of thinking as poker players.
