Yeah installing Xbox controller is a real pain on systems older than Win10, got through it twice now. It's doable with a cable and google. Somebody has uploaded the correct drivers somewhere. I couldn't get the wireless to work though and I'm not sure if anyone can.

**** like this frustrates me with companies, they made it harder on purpose to push people on Win10 I assume.

after struggling to even hit champion this whole season and getting my rewards last season fairly easily I managed to get this season's reward one day before it ended. Go figure.

so my steam time played is 300 hours now, but that’s probably inaccurate because i leave app running for long periods when i’m not at the keyboard. Say i’m like 150 hours in. Bounce around gold III to plat II.

Plat is really weird. The players are super inconsistent as far as skill. I think I’ve begun to plateau and I’m not gonna rank up any further until i practice mechanics. I can’t really do fancy aerials, I can do the quick take off and control my car decently in the air but those long crazy aerials, nah. Can’t control the ball well in the air either. I can’t really hit the ball off the wall that well but getting better.

I think I could be actually really decent at this game if i put the time in to practice but i dont know what to practice and i’m not sure what the reward would be, how i play the game now is fun to me

I think I've peaked skill-wise, it's been a long time since I felt like I was getting better at any particular skills.

I'm in diamond and I think I'm above-average at my skill level for playing goalie and anticipating opponents' plays, but I have the wall skills of a gold player and I don't even know how/when to use air roll.

and I remember thinking a few times I've peaked skill wise... there's always something to learn and you'll learn that. I've gotten champion rewards last 3 seasons now and if I play every day I know I'll eventually improve, it's guaranteed. Just needs consistency. I don't do enough training.

I might hit a 'downswing' and play worse for 50-100 hours, that happens too.

I remember watching goofy and thinking wow he's good and now he's saying he's a diamond player? No way.

This is me exactly (except for the goalie part cause I'm brutal in net)

It's pretty unbelievable seeing how great some of these guys handle their cars in the air but how terrible they are at general positioning and teamwork

Idk what I'm good at - I think I have a strong sense of positioning, knowing where to be at what times, and I know for a fact I'm extremely fast at moving my car around the field. I don't know if i can explain it right - do you guys know what I mean? Even at plat I feel like I'm often driving circles around everyone and they're going in slow motion. If my teammates suck I usually can rotate on my own shots multiple times.
I usually move around at top speed and spend very little time just sitting unless I'm goalie, and even then I push up pretty far when I know I can get away with it and I have the boost to get back to the net if there's a rogue shot towards it.

I make a habit of only trying to touch the ball if I know I can make a good hit that puts us in a better position (unless it's an emergency type of scenario that doesn't allow that).

I'm pretty decent at maintaining and stealing possession of the ball. Very good at clearing, passing, centering, decent at scoring. If I miss a shot in a game I know was makeable I go into training and try to recreate it until I nail it most of the time.

But yea like give me a high lobbed ball kind of above me and I probably don't even go for it because someone will get there first or I just dont have the control in the air to go for high aerial bangers. Off the wall I am getting a little better but I cant really control where the balls gonna go, can't get very good hits and if it's above the net, yea odds aren't great I'll be able to defend it up there unless I was already there.

Id just work on aerials then

I think reaching high diamond and champ really makes the game more fun. Whiffs are more rare, so you can anticipate everything much better and there are passing plays, rotations are (normally) smooth.

I noticed I enjoyed the game a lot more once I was out of plat

I got the rocket pass for the first time and got the Guardian body. I've never played a car of this type and I'm loving it. It fits my shot a lot better than octane and I get much cleaner hits especially off the wall. What is this body based off of? I know it's probably a reskin of an existing body type. I don't know car bodies that well, I tried the batmobile but felt it was too sluggish on turns.

Re: plat vs higher ranks,

At my skill level and experience this with gold vs plat. Gold players i absolutely cannot predict whether theyll even touch the ball and have a bad tendency to double commit. Most plat players seem to know how to play somewhat properly so I dont need to have MVP style matches every game to win, i just need to make good passes and make sure I am in the right places and I win fairly easily.

I have unsubscribed from this thread multiple times yet it never stops showing up in my feed. However I just started playing again so maybe it’s a sign; on the other hand I’m still a terrible bronze scrub. Bought the Jurassic World pack because the TRex goal explosion is sweet af. Wonder if I should get Rocket Pass and try the Guardian, I mostly play Dominus now but not even sure what the best type of car is for me.

I always seem to come back to the Octane...

Yeah I tried Octane again last night and it felt way better than the other cards I was toying with, I see why it’s as popular as it is. Felt like I was getting to the ball quicker and had way better control in the air. I think I previously liked the angles that the ball came off the Dominus body but overall I think Octane is just better.

I'm still on this body, although it does feel less forgiving than octane. But overall it feels like I get much cleaner hits and dribbling is a lot easier for me for some reason.

hopefully we don't notice similarly to when tencent bought majority in Grinding Gear Games. Path of Exile remained seemingly untouched (except in China where it's p2w mess)

It's so weird the difference between solo and standard. Standard is my practice mode, i don't try hard. I've been as high as plat 1, as low as bronze 1. I am on a downward slide again there, dropping from gold 2 to silver 2 and it's so weird.

In standard I bounce between plat 1 and 2. I went into a plat game to see if I was just losing my mind and get MVP 3 games in a row. In silver I'm like on a 7 or 8 game losing streak.

how can this be? Silver is so frustrating. I think I shouldnt practice there anymore because it gives you bad habits, like over-chasing and not passing because you dont trust your teammates to be even close to the right position at any time.

it this game worth buying? still big playerbase and a good amount of noobs like me?

is the learning curve really bad or what i want something fun not something crazy hard.

Epic just acquired it so itll probably be f2p in a year. A little nervous about their acquisition. They should just mostly leave the game alone like Psyonix has for the most part but I feel they won't. It'll be a shame if it happens, the game is literally perfect right now.

Learning curve is steep but rewarding. The basic technical skills you need are not that hard, but I'd say it takes a solid 200 hours to get a really solid control of your car and the ball. I think if you have played real sports like soccer or basketball it helps a lot for some of the more team oriented things that frankly i dont think can be taught, like situational awareness, knowing where your teammates are, when and where to pass, rotating, etc.

I've been playing at least 1-2 5min matches almost every day for 4 years, always learning new things and getting better, and there are more people playing now than the first year. You won't have any trouble getting instant games at the lowest ranks. Some people bounce off of it, others stick with it for years like CS or one of the mobas.

Oh that’s crazy about Epic, first I’m hearing about it. I’ve gotten back into RL recently and I never have any trouble finding games in standard or duel at low levels. You can enjoy the game immediately but it definitely takes a while to figure out whats going on and what you should be doing. I’m at like 150 hours now and I still suck but I can also do things now that I couldn’t in the previous 100 or so hours. Someone told me to try duels (2 v 2) because you get a lot more touches and that’s been a huge game changer for me. I now queue both because I like variety but most games I get are doubles.
