Air roll is maybe a high level skill but it's huge. Quick recovery from aerials or flips, positioning yourself so you land flat with handbrake to keep your momentum. That's how pros always seem so much faster, they're using minimal boost and just being smart about how they build and maintain momentum. Repositioning in the air with roll once you jump for an aerial shot or clear is 100% also required to get any power or accuracy, along with just knowing when and at what angle to jump. Those are long term skills that I didn't really start working on until 800+ hours in, but I kind of avoided it because I was working on other things.
They didn't add the practice playlists until I had like 1k hours IIRC, and those are really helpful for quick improvement, as is just mucking around in free play for 20-30mins trying to predict where the ball is going to come off the wall or how to hit it hard around the map. Once I started working on power shots and accuracy with the practice playlists I improved a crazy amount in not much time. I think it's like any sport, don't consciously practice anything while you're in a game, but always have one thing you're working on improving as a goal and practice outside the game at least as much as you play on it.
