I've just finished the third episode of Cogntion:
http://www.postudios.com/cognition/. Episodic adventure game series. Think the fourth and final episode is coming out in a few months.
It's an old-school point and click adventure game where the protagonist, FBI agent Erica Reed, investigates some grisly murders. The twist is that Erica has psychic powers that allow her to see into the past. You can use your powers on objects to recreate a scene from the past, and also dig into people's memories.
The story's pretty good and creepy; I was genuinely drawn in and keen to find out how it develops. Some of the puzzles make really good use of the psychic gimmick, particularly in the third episode. Inevitably I suppose, a number of puzzles are contrived and strain credulity. I didn't find many puzzles too hard though and I suck at adventure games. There's a hint system which I occasionally resorted to, although it nicely keeps the hints vague.
Graphics are a mixed bag - the character models are simplistic and the animations can be plain strange - Erica's leg frequently lunges out as if she's trying to join the Ministry of Funny Walks. But there are some good comic-book cutscenes.
A number of the supporting characters feel one-dimensional: you've got aggressive boss, lazy partner, grumpy coroner, etc. But Erica Reed herself is better fleshed out and the actress, Raleigh Holmes, does a very good job. I've read that her Boston accent is a little dodgy but I wouldn't know about that.
Biggest problem with the games are technical. Bizarrely long loading times for areas and frequent delays when you want Erica to do something. I've had one incident where the game locked up while transitioning from one area to another.
Overall I'd give it 7.5/10. Thoroughly enjoyed it, just annoyed by the technical problems. Definitely worth checking out if you like adventure games. You can only buy it on the dev's website. Helpfully there's a demo available.
