Brütal Legend 2009 (Double Fine)

Jack Black goes back in time to save a world that has been enslaved by an evil emperor, his weapon of choice THE POWER OF METAL. TAKE MY MONEYS.

They just ported this to PC. It's one of the goofiest games I have ever played. It starts out hack and slash, and the early parts are like a tutorial for the later RTS portions of the game, and then there's driving missions mixed in with that. None of the combat was really that enjoyable. You press M1 to swing your axe, M2 shocks someone with your guitar. You can also run into a crowd of enemies and then play a face melting solo (which you then have to press Q, select the face melting solo with your mouse, then proceed to play it in the order they request by pressing the numbers 3 2 1 1 3 on your keyboard). The RTS portions are just goofy. You fight stage vs stage, and you harness the power of fans with the use of merch booths to upgrade your units. If you do enjoy those portions you can play multi-player against other people. :P

It has got a sick soundtrack (107 songs) if you're into metal. Characters voiced by Jack Black, Ozzy, Lemmy, Rob Halford, and Tim Curry. if you can pick it up on sale and you're a metal fan it's probably worth a playthrough. :P

Rayman Origins - PS3

I've always been a fan of side scroller/platform games so after this was recommended I rented it right away. I think this is one of those over looked games due to the type of game it is.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/998304-rayman-origins

Negatives
- The cutesy noises througout the game
- Easy bosses

Positives
- Solid music throughout
- Cool level designs
- Surpisingly good cartoonish graphics
- Difficulty ramps up the later you go, especially if you are trying to collect everything
- The controls were very sound with reaction times etc. This is important in platform games where it can be frustrating when your character doesn't react instaneously when you do certain moves.

All in all it was a fun/addictive game. I didn't collect all the faces to get the secret bonus level (and from what I heard ridiculously hard level) unlocked due to only renting it for 5 days. If you can get past some of the noises in the game that are kiddish/annoying it is definitely worth a rent.

Solid 7.5 to 8.0/10

Yeah, I got Rayman Origins once it was like $15 to buy. I did end up collecting everything, and yes the last level is a beast. Takes like 10+ tries to beat each section of the level, which is really nice for this level. And they don't offer a time trial thank god or else the completest in me would still be playing it.

Saints Row: The Third - PC
9/10

This is my first Saints Row game and I picked it up for cheap in the THQ Humble Bundle, which is the ONLY reason I had it. I ended up being quite impressed and have played it for 25-30 hours. I generally dislike GTA style games, but the extremely over-the-top missions in this game had me excited to keep playing.

Saints Row knows what you want from these types of games and doesn't hold you back like the GTA series does. Jumping from airplanes - check. Riding in tanks - check. Jumping from airplanes, while in a tank - check. I had a blast fighting off assassin strippers, luchadores, tron-themed gangsters and people in full-body animal costumes. Oh yea, how could I forget killing cops with a giant purple dildo -or- calling down an airstrike on a rival gang operation.

For a GTA style shoot-em-up, there are a lot of great character moments with your gang in this game. I really got a kick out of Pierce singing Sublime's "What I Got" during one of the early missions. Kinzie is an all-around dream character for us computer nerds and Angel is mother-f'n Hulk Hogan. Even Burt Reynolds shows up in this game.

It only takes about 15-20 hours to complete all of the missions, but there are plenty of side missions including; assassination targets, vehicle thefts, save the hookers, and Japanese-styled game shows.

Not every part of this crazy ridiculous story clicked with me. The zombies are kind of dumb and the Murder Brawl stage was lame (who am I to not have fun with a Chainsaw?) However, I'm willing to forgive these because when you go so big on everything, some stuff is going to fall flat.

I would highly recommend this if you can find it cheap after THQ disbanded or if you picked it up for one of the Bundles and haven't played it yet.

I did two-fer

FarCry 3 - 8.5/10

Solid gameplay, quite entertaining with some great graphics. I'm a sucker for a great story with progression and I feel that things took a weird turn... maybe the game was too psychadelic for my liking, with Jason being all shocked about killing and not knowing how to fire a gun to being a bloodthirsty killer in the space of 30 minutes. My main gripe was the repetitiveness, clearing out the compounds could be done with the same tactic constantly, picking up collectibles, hunter/assassination/supply run quests.

This is just something in general for me, I get the idea of collectibles, I just don't like them that much!

Mass Effect 2 - 9/10

Another great game, more filler than killer compared to ME1, however it left me wanting to buy ME3. I prefer the inventory/upgrade system compared to the fiddly inventory of ME1, however I spent way too long scouring and depleting every planet in every system for very little reward in the end. Game seemed too short with acquiring a crew, getting their loyalty and then bam! Omega Relay and end, but other than that, thoroughly enjoyable.

Ya you will definitely have to play ME3 now. It's probably a little worse just because its narrative is less focused than ME2 and has more of a skyrim feel with lots of little isolated quests. I was thoroughly satisfied with the ME3 ending and that was even before they fixed it up.

I've gotten through a few of my backlog games lately.

Frozen Synapse - PC, Mac, Linux

I read a review that mentioned a similarity to the tactical planning phase of Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear and was already throwing my money at the game. The graphics are fairly simple, but there's a ton of tactical depth. Missions play out in 5s turn based intervals, where you plan your moves for each of your squad members, typically 3-4 units, and can watch an expected simulation play out for the 5s duration. You can also take control of the enemy units and command them to test various strategies they might employ - otherwise they'll just stay in their last known position during your simulation, which is rarely going to happen in the actual play through. When you're ready, you commit to the moves and the game plays forwards 5s. For example, in the screenshot above, the green guy with the lines moves forward, then ducks and moves to the entrance and stands up and then moves to the transparent looking barrier before adjusting his aim about 5 degrees to the left (units have a field-of-view of about 45-50 degrees within which they'll engage anyone in range), which is what the white icons next to the green way-points indicate.

The single player campaign is fairly lengthy, taking I would guess around 10-15 hours to complete, but it's not the strength of the game. The cyberpunkish story isn't terribly engaging and is a bit abstract, something about you being a tactical planner in control of cloned bodies with minimal intelligence tasked to help combat some sort of oppressive mega corporation in the distant future. The missions are semi-randomly generated and are fairly short (usually ~5-10mins), so restarting a mission you've failed yields a similar looking floor plan with random variations. I did find the difficulty to be very poorly paced, with most missions being easy enough to beat in the first attempt, and a few medium to hard difficulty missions randomly scattered throughout that required a few attempts, and no real difficulty curve to speak of.

The online play is where the game shines. There are five game modes, each pretty interesting and varied, with the option to play with enemy units hidden unless in direct line-of-sight (dark) or always shown as in the single player campaign (light). You can challenge anyone to a match at any time, and games can take a few minutes if you're both online or be spread over days as you and your opponent come online and finish a turn at different times. There's a global ranking system that uses an ELO scoring system like in Chess or more aptly League of Legends. The interface has a ton of options for keeping track of games and replays, managing friends, etc. It's very well designed and thorough but can take some getting used to. The only major downside I've found is the small player base, rarely more than 20-30 players online at a time spread across two or three servers, though the fact that you can start or continue matches while your opponent is offline helps a ton, and I've found myself keeping 10 or more active games going at a time, and it's an awesome game for puttering around for a few minutes every now and again while I'm doing other stuff.

The Walking Dead | PC
Not much to say about one of the highest rated games of last year, except that I loved it and I doubt there's anyone that would enjoy it that hasn't already played it.

Space Quest IV | PC
An old Sierra point-and-click adventure game from the early 90s. The GoG version that works on Win 7 comes bundled with IV, V and VI, but it seems like IV is regarded as the best. I happened on this after seeing that the game is narrated by the guy who does Powdered Toast Man on Ren and Stimpy and a ton of other cartoons from the 80s-90s, and after watching a few youtube videos:

Definitely one of the funniest games I've ever played. What other adventure game lets you lick and smell objects as actions? A lot of the humor comes in the many ridiculous ways in which you're killed, which turns what would otherwise be a trial in frustration into you going out of your way at times to kill yourself. The constant saving can be a bit tedious though. It's a bit short, and there're a ton of references to previous Space Quest games which went over my head, but I didn't find that to be a big deal.

EDIT:
Also beat Bastion recently, and similar feelings to DC11GTR, the narrator and the visuals are both amazing and carry the gameplay, which is fairly simple and easy. It would have been very easy for this game to have come off as another pretentious indie, but it's so original in how the story is told in bits and pieces through the awesome narrator as you progress, something that few games have ever done, and together with the visuals carry the very linear story pacing and level design.

Also beat Spec Ops, which felt like a waste of 5 hours. The gameplay as every review seems to mention is very mediocre, but I didn't find the story to be as emotionally engaging as others seem to. Many parts felt very contrived and over the top, such as the scene where you unwittingly commit an atrocity that everyone points to. It certainly attempts more that most other shooter games, which is cool, but wasn't for me.

Forgot to mention one last one.

I Wanna Be The Guy: Gaiden | PC
A freeware 8-bit platformer that steals scenery, sounds, music and enemies from classic NES/Sega games in an attempt to be the hardest platformer game ever made. Which it easily accomplishes. Definitely not for most people, it basically involves building up muscle memory for beating each level over the course of hundreds of deaths, but I loved it. It took me like 600 deaths and around a month of casual play to beat Gaiden, and now I'm starting to play the first one which doesn't seem as enjoyable. The Bionic Arm adds a lot to Gaiden.

There's an interesting video from last years EVO event where the creator unveiled the game live while a guy played it on stage, and basically took control of the game at times remotely (as in, from Japan watching the play from a live stream remotely), taunting him with deaths from huge airplanes, Sonic the Hedgehog, and text messages, and at a few points he even helps him out with hints or by using the blue hand from the original Zelda to move him ahead a bit. The guy playing seems like a bit of a douche, and the announcers are annoying as ****, but it's fairly amazing, both to watch him beat the game live in only a few hours and to see how much time and to see the effort and creativity the creator had put in to coding the remote management gimmicks to egg the crowd and player on for one event.

Nice to see Space Quest IV in a review. One of my favorite games, and easily the best of that series. The old Sierra games are all excellent. Check out King's Quest IV if you like that. It's easily the best of King's Quest.

Huge +1. One of the absolute gems from the past IMO. Funny thing is I don't think I ever played any other King's Quest, but my dad had KQ4 on his old IBM PC that needed to be loaded from a Dos prompt, and man did I love that game.

My fav from this era is the Quest for glory series.
Point and click mixed with rpg elements. Also what made all of the Sierra games awesome was the humor.

My old friend has had my Space Quest Collection (1-5) since 1998. I've only seen him once since 1999 randomly in an Olive Garden, so I think it's time to write it off.

I'll probably pick up the 1-3 bundle, but I think Gary Owens' narration has set the bar too high for me to not feel a bit disappointed And yes, I had to look up hints a few times. I'm not terribly good at being a patient and thorough adventure gamer, usually I put up with these games for their humor and story.

I only ever played QFG V, and only because it was one of the few Mac games around at the time. I never beat it but I have fond memories of it, probably another one to add to my GOG queue.

It's $17 on GOG at the moment for all six, I'm sure it'll be half off during a sale sometime soonish. It'll be nice to have all these games on a digital download service, I think I've purchased Planescape Torment four times because I kept loosing discs.

I actually meant 6, but made a typo. I loved all the games in the series, but in terms of recommending them I figured 6 would be more enjoyable as some people get turned off the horrendous graphics of the earlier games. 6 was the one with the magic map and the catacombs..all that fun stuff.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is another great point and click for those into the adventure genre.

Batman Arkham City Xbox 360

I played the original and really liked it. This is more of the same. Combat and stealth are first class both are responsive and satisfying. The story's stronger and the voice acting is excellent again. Sadly many of the problems with the original remain. It's still very visually glitchy spazzing out regularly. Detective vision is so overpowered I played half the game using it. Boss battles while an improvement are still a little disappointing relying on the old attack pattern memorization trope. I didn't think it had as much Metroid style exploration as the first either which was a shame.

Its a bit on the short side but has a ton of optional side missions few of which I managed to complete before the main story ran its course. That's another minor annoyance the game indicated I was about a third complete so I thought I had time to get the Riddler and finish a few other quests but then the main story came to an end. 8/10

God of War Ascension PS3

I'm a fan of the series so of course I was pumped for this...a bit nervous on seeing how they were going to even come remotely close to how 3 ended. I beat it in 8 hours 45 minutes. Now I have all the games so I came in knowing how to play them (hidden brag), but still it was about half as long as it should have been imo.

Positives
- Fun boss battles
- Great graphics
- Controller was very responsive making it easy to control your character
- Some gruesome kills as usual

Negatives
- Way too short
- Very predictable white chests for extending your health and magic
- Couple of new move and gadgets, but nothing to wow you
- Few puzzles were somewhat easy...might not necessarily be a bad thing though.

Conclusion...I am still glad I bought it being a fan, but feel like a few things were missing. It's tough to make a prequel and have it meet up to the expectations of the other games. It's still a fun game even though it was short, with some very cool boss battles and cut scenes etc.

Grade: 7 out of 10

9 hours is about on par with the GOWs iirc.

It's a bit under par, and why not? I have seen other action games with a campain in the 12-15 hour range. Sorry if 8 hours 45 minutes seems a bit short for the $ I am spending lol.

I'm happy to have shorter games. It was "only" a 7/10, so why do you want to waste more hours on it when you could be playing a 9/10 that you never played or reading 2666 or watching 3 Coen Brothers movies?

Last post (sorry for review derail). 7 out of 10 is still good in my book. Being a big fan of the series and enjoying all the previous ones while it was only "good" I will still enjoy a longer game. I don't consider it wasting hours to play a "7" game. There are very few 9/10 games out there anymore it seems anyway on the PS3.

Spec Ops: The Line (PS3) - 6/10

Eh. This game has gotten a lot of attention (including probably the first full-length book written on one specific game) for supposedly saying important and meaningful things about games. I don't see it.

I haven't played any other modern war shooters, and since this game is critiquing the genre that might be problematic. Some critics have said though that almost every other modern war shooter is also attempting to subvert the tropes of the genre (http://exploringbelievability.blogsp...-ops-line.html), so I'm not even sure that Spec Ops: The Line is as unique as people think.

Other than the allegedly brilliant message of the game, there isn't too much on offer. The gameplay isn't great and it can be frustrating. The campaign took me 5.5 hours, which in this case was a good thing.

Bioshock: Infinite

8/10 with

pros:

+amazing artwork/graphics on the pc, probably the most beautiful game I've played in a long time
+engaging storyline/main characters with a nice ending (imo)
+fun gameplay, fps with a platform feel to it, lots of gameplay options available depending on builds

cons:

-some spells felt kinda lacklustre imo compared to a few great spells
-weapon customisation was boring, could only improve weapons by increasing their firepower/rate of fire/load/clip size, doesn't feel too fun compared to special abilities weapons get in BS1/2. For me it seemed like for the first 40% of the game there were like maybe 5 weapons available and they felt pretty unique, but in the latter 60% of the game, it feels like you get twice as many weapons which all roughly do the same stuff mostly...
-the last 60-80% of the game felt like bit of a grind, repetitive boss fights mainly and going through areas you've gone into before with respawn on the mobs...

Would highly recommend this, but if your not in a rush to play this game and don't really mind waiting, I'd probably recommend downloading this somewhere or getting it at a later date for a cheaper price as the single player campaign on medium is ~10 hours without too much replayability due to the lack of itemization.
