Red Dead Redemption 2 (it's out!) Red Dead Redemption 2 (it's out!)

RDR was much, much more realistic than any GTA game.

As I posted earlier, GTA games are over the top and cartoonish, they often times are down right satire. Everything about RDR was much more serious and realistic than GTA was, the characters, the setting, the motivations, etc.

Realism can be an important aspect of a game, it totally depends on the game and what the developers are going for.

Yes and no. Some points such as atmosphere are very realistic. But at its core, the game is still the classic model of "one guy carries a billion guns and fights hundreds of enemies by himself."

It is not "realistic", stop. It's providing an Old West setting to play in and tell a story in. The setting is largely based on film depictions of the Old West; the 3 main areas go through different eras of Westerns.

We can homage our romantic visions of the Old West while still representing women, people of color, and other minorities fully and with more respect. As I've said before, this opens up significantly more interesting story possibilities considering we've already seen, played, listened to, and read literally tens (hundreds) of thousands of stories of straight white male cowboys in a fictionalized Old West. Same applies to GTA: the story of a woman rising up in their criminal universe could breathe much needed life into that now-pathetic (from a story standpoint) series.

[In reality I guess it might not do much, as the problem is more how full of themselves Rockstar is and how good they think their writing is.]

If the protagonist isn't a 14 year old Chinese transexual I'll probably just wait for this game to go on sale.

Somethings happening, probably a new trailer. Switch and PC ports of the original would be nice too.

That would take a miracle if you believe Leslie Benzies' side of the story.

This will be the first Rockstar game since he left, going to be interesting to see how much of an impact it has. I know he only came in to "fix" the original RDR at the end but his influence seems pretty huge across all of their games.

It's a prequel.

I don't know, I loved the first game but this trailer didn't wow me. Rockstar sent out a release that you only play as one character and he doesn't seem likable at all. John Marston was a bad guy but he had a little charm to him, this guy just seems like an *******. I'm interested in the prequel aspect and seeing the formation of Dutch's gang but I was kind of expecting more out of this trailer. I'm still excited but the main character just seems **** so far.

There's nothing remotely interesting about the trailer except that it showed some action sequences, indicating perhaps that we'll keep going in the Unchartified direction rather than actual open world freedom.

Rockstar sucks.

yea, trailer as a fan had me hyped but overall it was just a look at a few scenes - no real build-up on story or scope. based on what I've read though still gonna be a def buy.

Bump because this is finally coming out and the gameplay trailer came out:

I’m not super into video games anymore but I’ll probably preorder this one. I love the choose your own adventure style and how virtually every interaction you have with another character effects the whole future of your game. Pretty amazing stuff!

I think everyone that gave God of War a perfect score is going to feel obligated to do the same here, thus ushering more and more devs to make their games as cinematic as possible, creating a feedback loop

Preordered mine a couple days ago. They released a second gameplay trailer on YouTube:

This might break some all-time records.

Every game ever seems to promise this type of immersive interaction, but I've found in every single case it's pretty shallow. The game I played that maybe did the best job of it was mass effect, but it was still very finite.

Agreed. Rockstar is especially guilty of this. I still remember how they described the hunger and workout systems from San Andreas. Too often, "immersive interaction" just means a transparent mini-game or slight dialogue change that you quickly forget about.

I agree but the people who have managed to already get their hands on this (for beta or promo or whatever else) say this game truly is immersive like no game before. Probably not to the extent most of us would like in a truly immersive experience but it seems like it really is something pretty amazing. Of course, those reviewers could all be hired shills.
