BJ picks every spot to discuss it.

People care about this issue you just pick incredibly stupid spots to discuss it and do it so aggressively that it's hard to take you seriously.
I "aggressively" posted one tweet without comment that humorously commented on big developers' responses to lack of women protagonists. A bunch of people got super agitated about that, including you with a condescending meme. So don't act like it's "BJ and Cotton" slinging mud (I have no interest in engaging with him) while you and the high-minded folk are trying to have a civil discussion. The sex of the protagonist(s) at the time that I posted that was one of about TWO things we could reasonably deduce from pre-trailer information, so it was almost literally all there was to discuss.

With GTA3+, Bully, Red Deads, and LA Noire (I'm not including all of their other stuff like Manhunt which would make it much worse), Rockstar has ~14 open world games with 16 playable characters, all of them male. If what people suspect from the marketing is true about this game, we'll have 23 playable characters, all male (at the very least it will be 17).

Rockstar was already criticized for this with GTA5, and were criticized enough that they felt compelled to respond that they were telling what they feel is an important story about masculinity (lol). They've chosen to punt once again, it would seem.

I'm not sure in what ****ing universe of cognitive dissonance you live in that you both DO think representing women well in games is important, and ALSO think that it's inappropriate to discuss here and now. When do you think is the time and place to discuss it? Which threads? Which games? A quarantined thread so that you can go on living in ignorance and not have to think about anything other than "ride horses, rope bitches"?

I would not get aggressive if there weren't reason to get aggressive. The responses from many here are the responses of sexist trash. I will continue to call out sexist trash when I see it.

You're unambiguously wrong about the appropriateness of discussing it here (of course it's appropriate), but I'm fine with ignoring it for now barring further comments or news.

While I agree that R* could and should include some female playable characters, the fact that "OMG SEXISM!" even entered the discussion based on one single teaser-poster says quite a bit about how focused some people are on making everything a sexism-issue.

In this case it's a game set in a time and place where having an all male 'cast' actually is historically correct too - that doesn't mean they couldn't have included a woman or two (especially if they're actually planning on making all 7 playable characters), but we don't actually know anything about anything yet.

Criticism of GTAV at least came after the game was released and people knew what they were talking about - doing a pre-emtive "misogony-alert!!!!" based on one simple teaser poster that says very little about how the game will be just comes off as incredibly desperate.

Sure, it's a bit of an overreaction to assume we know just what the final game will be like. This response is reasonable:

I'm happy to not give Rockstar the benefit of the doubt, they don't deserve it.

The argument on historical accuracy is invalid. Cowboys killing hundreds of people, being shot thousands of time without dying, meeting a random stranger who is a supernatural being, and magically slowing down time are not "historically accurate".

Also:

So let's not pretend "historical accuracy" is important here.

Rockstar games would generally be better on gender if they literally didn't have any female characters tbh not sure if people are really thinking through their ask here

I seriously hope they don't go with 7 playable characters idea, a big part of what made RDR so good was that you actually cared what happened to the main character, there's no way they accomplish that with 7 chars.

If a 2 hour movie can establish 7 characters you care about, 40 hours of gameplay definitely should. They'd just need to do a real good job of balancing them so that you don't just use "the good ones".

Like in FF13, when you FINALLY got to make your own parties 25 hours into the game, a whole ****load of characters essentially became cutscene accessories.

can a movie really do that though? Or more accurately: how many movies that try something like that actually achieve it?
I'm not very optimistic if they go down that route.

First post!

Thought it'd be fitting if it was here. I was looking for an introduction/noob thread or sub-forum, but couldn't find it. Tried to PM the Lounge mod, but seems you need to post a bit to be able to do even that! Oh well, I shall remain a faceless noob, for now. I do have my fair shair of forum experience, though.

Looking forward to RDR2!

Oddly enough, I had just started replaying RDR about a week before the announcement came. It's still a masterpiece and I can't wait to see what they've come up with for the next chapter.

Truly, story has never been Rockstar's strength, but I find Marston's saga more tolerable than any of the GTAs. The world is where Red Dead shines. I've never been more happy messing around for hours picking flowers and encountering random events.

Having bears chase you after mauling your horse and having no dead eye was legit. This game is going to be amazing

PTSD just remembering cougars randomly destroying my horse as I was just peacefully trying to do other things.

RDR's world felt a lot more real and serious than GTA games.

GTA games are over the top cartoonish on purpose, which works fine for them.

was she like the only one though?

otherwise having 7 male chars makes sense in a game based on realism. if women were historically never out murdering and raping/pillaging.

There were def. women out murdering and pillaging and for every 1 of them there were 100,000 men doing the same thing.

Using "well 1 existed" as some sort of argument that a game should include one is kidn of absurd. I'm sure there was at least one gay cowboy in the old west too, and a black one, and an Asian one, whatever.

SJWs won't be happy unless the entire posse looks like the cover of a college brochure and they discuss their gender identities and intersectional feminism around the campfire every night, you know, important cowboy stuff.

Gamers are the absolute worst on what's "realistic" and what's not. This is literally GTA in the wild west but, "there should be only one girl tho!" There are countless successful, undocumented women across all across history.

That said, I do agree with the "college brochure" sentiment and think a lot of that motivation is misplaced.
