New details on the PS4 errr umm I mean Orbis have been leaked today:

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/122/1221819p1.html

http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged...200015017.html

Cliffs:

1. The next PlayStation is codenamed Orbis and will launch in the 2013 holiday season.

2. For the nerds either an AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU.

3. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU and the Xbox 3 :
Quote:
Orbis will not feature backwards compatibility with PlayStation 3 games and will incorporate some sort of used-games restriction.
4. LOL Retina display, Orbis is said to be capable of resolutions up to 4096x2160

5. Full 3d in 1080p

I personally do not like sony/ps3, as I have an Xbox and Wii. But if the Xbox bans games and the PS4 does not, and its got a 4k resolution plus some other good IP's who knows. They should also redesign their controller imo.

wtf would a console do with 4096x2160 resolution? It's not like the next generation of hi-def TVs is around the corner.

Huge lol at both consoles having used game restrictions - how could that possibly happen as a result of anything other than collusion?

And people didnt believe me last year(early this year?) when I said next gen consoles were at least 2 years away. What is Sony's track record for keeping dates?

There's always the WiiU, I hope.

And an OLED tv is going to launch sometime this year imo, but it will be ultra expensive.

IGN vid on this topic, worth the watch imo.

Used game restriction? Please tell me you're joking.

If both the next xbox and ps4 implement this I'll pass on both.

I never buy used games, but as someone who usually waits a year or two for a game to drop to $20-$30 before buying it I'm fairly concerned about the used game thing too - I imagine the motivation for retailers to drop prices on games is decreased a fair amount if they don't have to compete with an increased supply of used games flooding the market over time as people who bought the game new finish it and try to sell it.

This is exactly what I am worried about.

The used game restriction and no backwards compatibilty isnt surprising. It's just one step closer to a completely digital console. Don't know why there would be a huge lol at both consoles doing. It makes a huge amount of sense from a business point of view, doubt there's any collusion, maybe pressure from publishers though. MS and Sony make their money on software not hardware.

I read somewhere that this isn't the case, at least in the first couple years of consoles when the internals are still costing more than what they sell the system for.

They make most of their money from licensing to allow developers to make games for their systems.

I can only imagine that consoles being able to handle 4k will speed up the progress of those TVs coming out for a reasonable price by quite a bit. Not like any game will be rendered at 4k but w/e, I hope that the standard will become atleast 1080p, which seems pretty likely.

I used to be a 360 fan but the last year or so I've been PS3 since it still works.

I don't dabble in used games much but the restrictions on used games really puts a sour taste in my mouth. Imagine if cars were like that.

What happens if you have a great multiplayer game and you want to take it over to a friends' house? I'm not putting my PSN account on their machine. Does that mean I can't play the game that I bought? The feeling of "purchasing" or "ownership" of games is going out the window. If that's the way the system works it would feel more like a permanent rental.

Do you people who complain about this realize that Steam has the exact same restrictions? It's kind of ironic and funny, but it also shows the power of PR and good customer service.

If I'm using Steam I am playing my myself, even if it's a multiplayer game. I'm talking more about going over to a friend's place to play Zombies in Black Ops, or Halo. To me console gaming has a more communal feeling.

I don't have the same portability expectations when using a PC so it doesn't provoke a complaint.

I see your point and feel somewhat sympathetic to it. But it seems to me like you'll have to change your attitude towards all this - i dont think we'll go back to (or continue with) the old system. In the end publishers will do what's best for their bottom line and there probably arent enough that feel like you do to outweigh the benefits.

Not being able to play used games is pretty much gg and the end of my career as a terrible gamer. I buy maybe 3 games tops a year at new prices and it's usually a struggle just to be able to afford those.
