It's baffling that they didn't include some basic instructions. The first hour I played I had no idea what was going on as your eyes tend to focus on your ship and it's immediate surroundings. It wasn't until I watched a friend play that I was able to look around the whole screen and figure a few things out. The game is infinitely more enjoyable when you realise the mechanics in play.
Anyway, here is what I've learned (someone correct me if any are wrong, these are all educated guesses)
Your ship is surrounded by 2 semi-circular gauges. The top one, a light blue color, is your boost gauge. It depletes as you hold boost and recharges when you release. You can only activate it when the gauge is full. They'll be an audio cue when it's recharged. The bottom one is green and is your Overdrive gauge. It fills up as you collect the green cubes dropped by enemies and you can also only activate it once the gauge is full.
YOU CAN BOOST THROUGH ENEMIES AND BULLETS. I put this in caps as I had no idea you could do this until I got to the third level and it's a massive help for getting better at the game. You can also boost through the weapon Power-Up to collect it if you don't want to shoot its protective shell. Each enemy you hit while boosting will also add a tiny bit to your boost bar to stop it depleting as quickly. When you release boost, you'll also get a small AoE explosion around your ship that instakills anything.
Saving humans
You can play the levels whilst ignoring all humans, but saving them will bring rewards like Extra Lives, Shields, Bombs or Points so it's worth doing.
Humans are released from their cells by destroying a group of Keepers. You'll get the audio cue of 'Keepers detected' then look for any enemies surrounded by a green glow. Once you've killed the last of a group, a sparkly trail will appear and fire towards a cell. This trail goes straight to the cell, so if the cell is on the other side of the screen, the trail will go through the middle (like the diameter of a circle), whilst your ship obviously has to go around the side.
You also get a visual indicator around your ship directing you to any freed humans. It's a green arrow that will appear on the edge of your Boost/Overdrive gauges.
You can't kill humans by shooting them, instead it chips them up in the air (useful if they are about to fall into a hole and die). Once they are clinging to your ship, take them to one of the two floating green stations at the top of each map. You can 'throw' them with L2 (they won't die if they hit an enemy or enemy bullets) which when used in conjunction with boost will really fling them quite far.
On later levels, some groups of Keepers need to be killed in order. There is a visual indicator to let you know which one to target. Using a bomb when these are on screen will result in a 'Human Lost'.
For ship choice I personally like the most mobile one as I usually save my overdrive for the bosses anyway so I'm not too bothered by having a weaker overdrive.
That's all I've figured out so far. Really fun game but I still haven't managed to beat the final level on Normal yet so I'm hardly an expert. The most useful advice I can give is try to train your eyes to take in all of what is happening on screen. It's really easy to miss the trails to the cells the dead keepers leave or the arrow around your gauge pointing out freed humans if you're not actively looking for them.
