Is it explained anywhere what the circle is/does when catching a pokemon? All I know is I'm supposed to swipe and apparently try and hit the pokemon with the ball.

I took over the gym near my work this morning. It's a brewery/restaurant. I felt like an idiot standing in an empty parking lot by the side of the building but #worth. Go team blue.

The circle is basically an indication of how difficult it is to catch. I think you want to hit the circle with your throw.

not explained at all

from what i understand

green = easy
yellow = medium
red = hard

you want to hit the pokemon within the circle

the smaller the changing colored circle is, you get a great/excellent throw xp bonus of 50/100 points for hitting the center

my first egg hatched and was a pidgey

was obviously let down, however I realized that the egg pidgey only costs 400 dust and a candy to power up while my caught pidgey costs 600 and a candy. value!

actually it looks like it just costs less to power up at lower CP. the two pidgeys I had were a 69 and 73 so I guess 70 is the line

FYI - when I took over the gym it wouldn't let me assign my best pokemon to it and I couldn't figure out why so I put some crappy Raticate on it. Turns out the pokemon needed to be at full hp and I had just battled with it so I needed to use a potion before assigning it to a gym. Never saw that explained before so hopefully this helps someone.

did a test and I believe the timing of evolution makes no long term difference.

I evolved two pidgeys, one about mid CP and one maxed. their pidgeottos stayed at the same point on the CP semicircle and look to have the same max CP. doesnt cost any extra to boost an evolved for either.

So Id recommend just evolving guys right away when you can for the instant cp upgrade

another thing I noticed is that both ended up as XS weight despite one being normal and one being XL before evo. seems like its just random after evo

just evolved two rattatas and both raticates were XS as well. anyone get anything different?

Agree with all that but a point against evolving early is to save your candy. I read that once you reach certain levels it becomes common to find evolved versions of certain Pokemon. i.e Pidgeottos at level 5, even Pidgeots at level 8. So if you wait to level up you'll save candies by not leveling them up

this could be true though in original pokemon wild evolved forms were always less strong than ones you evolved yourself

though in this game it seems a pidgeotto is a pidgeotto with the same CP semicircle no matter what

where on the semicircle is that pidgeot?

do evolved wild guys trend XL but ones you evolve yourself XS? that is really really bad design and I sure hope Im just seeing bad variance

Just log in a lot. Even at my work with no pokestops nearby I unlock the screen every now and then and usually there's a pokemon or two waiting for me

in regular pokemon games, the only reason to delay evolution is to teach specific moves; it has no effect on stats

I'm level 8 and got about 40 on my pokedex. Evolved a Pigiott last night, I got a few cool things like a magmar and a dratini and a lot of squirtles started spawning randomly. Took over all the gyms near me

and basics take less xp to gain levels (at least in the earliest games iirc)
