Let's not derail Steam thread any more.

Couple of links:

http://eternity.obsidian.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillars_of_Eternity
http://www.reddit.com/r/projecteternity/

Probably cheapest place to get it legally (since there are -20% coupons):

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/fi/e...-hero-edition/

Probably good idea to have spoilers in spoiler-tags for first few months.

In the very first dungeon, is there some puzzle with the braziers? I just lit them in random order and nothing noticeable happened.

On another note, you can get ~1€ free from Playfire just for playing PoE and progressing in the story.

Absolutely wonderful game so far, imo, but only a few hours in. Brings back wonderful memories of the Baldur's Gate series. Has that certain something that I couldn't find in WL2.

Am I missing something having picked a ranged caster? I've visited the first four areas and so far without finding a tank companion, lots of quick-saving and reloading when I happen upon packs of enemies in each area that eat me up, then just avoiding those spots. I've found two companions, a wizard and a priest(maybe?).

The painful tiles? I thought socketing the gem on the wall cleared them. I guess the torches makes more sense. Thanks.

I play a Fighter and was able to rent an apprentice at the Inn in the area where ppl are hung in a Tree. I could choose how I wanted the character.'

edit: should I use spoiler tags for this kind of stuff?

Probably not. Having every post in spoilers makes the thread fairly painful to read.

Is there an obvious way to tank other than have your tank up front?

I am playing a fighter w/ Defender (up to 3 engagements) and have another fighter who has the defensive stance aura talent which further buffs my main tank. So ideally I'd like my defender to be the main tank but seems there's no direct tanking ability early on?

Playing path of damned + iron with full party, expecting it as just a warm up for when I try to solo it. Game is hard. I've got a pretty good grasp on maxing the early game iny our favour as much as possible. but I'm unsure about the future i.e are camping supplies needed and when... i.e early on you can do a fight and then just travel to an inn so you don't use the supplies.

Getting party members early is not good it seems as it limits your xp (you in essence trade currency for xp by waiting to hire until you level up). You can get to Gilded vale without using any supplies and having 4 healing potions. The starting vendor also gives very good prices so ifg you sacrifice early gear you can get a small money boost at the start. You have to be super quick to get through the first dungeon without the fatigue penalties - which is fun in itself perfectly microing everything at the start like some kind of speed run as if you get to the spiders with fatigue - it's a very hard fight- also you may have to get rid of the woman to the trap disarm xp bonus is less shared.

It would be very sick if the game was designed so you could actually solo it on POTD and POI, but you had to basically break every part of the game. At the moment I'm putting off putting time into it due to all the bugs, they need a patch super quick.

Anyone completed this game yet? Is gilded vale one of the 'two big cities' ?I've not gotten far as keep dieng and having to restart.

BTW I've had computor issues since installing this game, especially with counter strike crashing and the sound being stuck on a 1 second repeat loop. I noticed this happened once in pillars also but it did not crash.

It's been a good few weeks, Cities Skylines, this and Bloodborne are the three best games I've played in a long time.

How many people are in to the nitty gritty of the combat stastics and abilities and using all the consumables? I find I don't really enjoy that aspect of CRPGs, which might be silly, I just like exploring the worlds and characters, and will probably end up finishing the game without ever having read up on the systems or used a consumable. The game is fairly easy so far on the normal difficulty though, I should try playing on hard and see how I do.

For those of us in the UK, Game is selling it for £27.99, which is equal to the discounted GMG price.

Having a tough time with Raedric's Keep, this last fight is ridiculous so I feel like I'm missing something. Any tips?

Spoiler:
I found the secret passage to the chapel, but when I talk to Raedric and the attack starts, I have 4 level 2s with one melee and I get instantly killed by like 3 priests, Raedric and a bunch of paladins.

Ya I would like it if there were a couple more clues as to what level you should be. In both the endless dungeon and Raedric's keep I was cruising along before bumping into fights that are impossible.

4 level 2s is pretty low for that part iirc. Could come back a little later or hire another character.

I cleared out the entire place except for that fight, then went back and worked on my other quests. One of the dudes in Gilded Vale that wouldn't talk to me before

Spoiler:
started offering new dialogue options for some reason and turned out to be a level 4 fighter companion, so now I have two tanks! Would have been useful earlier

Posted this in the other thread before seeing this.

Started off with an elf ranged named Stephen Colbert w/ a bear companion named a ****ing BEAR. Played a few hours but rangers seem terrible and I would advise anyone wanting a ranged bow-dps guy to make a rogue instead. Problem is the ranger seems to be balanced around doing dps from itself + the pet , which is good on paper since its 2 damage sources, plus lets you flank with the ranger while tanking with the pet. Problem is, the pet usually dies pretty quickly and then the ranger gets penalties while also losing a bunch of its damage. The ranger's damage on its own is pretty sub-par imo, especially since a lot of the talents and abilities focus around buffing the pet.

Anyways, I wasn't that far in, and had spent a lot of time reading dialogue etc so I restarted (playing on hard), with my new PC being a Cipher (which seems realllly strong), and hired a custom hearth orlan rogue bow dps guy once i hit lvl 3. This is the most optimal time imo if you want custom party members, as you hire ppl 1 level lower than you, so hiring right after you hit lvl 3 gives you a fresh lvl 2 guy(s) who can keep up in levels.

So after like 8-10 hours in, the rogue is only a little bit behind my cipher in damage dealt (and far ahead of the rest of the party). The dps difference compared to a ranger is insane. Not sure how crit% stacks but dirty fighting is turns 10% of hits into crits, vicious fighting is another +10%, and the heath orlan passive turns 10% of hits into crits when attacking someone an ally is attacking. On top of that, I just sneak attack crippling strike with him to start every combat which is usually 1 shotting 1 enemy. He has worse accuracy than an elf-ranger, but the huge damage increase more than makes up for it imo.

I'm currently running cipher/rogue/chanter/priest all with arbalests/guns and fighter/barb as tanks/frontline, but have been disappointed with the barb which is constantly dying. Might replace with a paladin or monk or druid (haven't used any of those yet) or maybe just a 2nd fighter.

Spoiler:
I beat it with a full 6 person party, iirc I had 3 lvl 4s and 3 lvl 3 custom characters I hired. Died the first attempt cause was too cocky (sniped a guy on the stairs but didnt see there were another 20 guys with him), but set some traps at the bottom of the stairs and used my rogue to pull them down, summoned skeletons/phantom using chanter, and charmed 1 guy w/ cipher which evened the odds quite a bit. Cipher rapefest aoe is really strong.

Also, disagree about hiring people too early. Yes more people = less XP, but if you wait to hire then they will be further behind your main character. If you hire when you hit lvl 3, you get a fresh lvl 2 guy who won't be very far behind in XP. If you hire when you get to say, lvl 6, now your hire is a fresh lvl 5, and it takes a much longer time to get from 5-6 then it does from 2-3, so those hirlings are probably going to always be a level behind your main character/NPC party members. Plus an extra person in your party is probably always going to be better than leveling slightly faster in terms of actual combat strength.
