I love my 144hz 1440p monitor. I have a 980ti and it runs every game at great frames, though you have to turn some games down from max a little bit to keep them perfect. 1440p @ medium > 1080p @ ultra at this point for me.

I'd get a 144hz monitor, but i only have a 970, not sure if i wanna turn stuff down to hit the framerate. Been wrestling with the idea for a while. I like ultra/high with 60fps

can't you run it at 72 for those titles?

I legitimately can't make myself play on 60hz after being on 120hz+ for like 7 years. Everything feels sooooooo laggy. That alone > slight graphical fidelity on some high end games. I feel like a 970 should be fine to drive most games at 100+ fps (which would make 144hz feel much smoother than 60hz) on high/ultra settings anyway at 1080p. At 1440p, it would definitely struggle on higher graphics settings, but as I said, crappy graphics settings on 1440p still looks better than higher on a 1080p. That might be partially a product of a 27 inch monitor though.

I have a 28 inch 4k@60hz display for my second monitor, and I really dislike playing even a game like WoW on it just because of input delay/60hz, even though it looks amazing at that res.

This is something to think about. Spoiled to my 120/44hz(forget which i have) tv. Everything looks so much better on it, compared to the other tvs in my house at 60

I'm still rocking two 60hz 24'' 20'' monitor setup from my uni/poker days. Pretty sure they're both like 5-6 years old (the smaller one could be older) but I never felt the need to replace it. Am I missing out for not gaming in 144hz? I play more indie games, but I'm wondering how great would a Rocket League experience in 144hz.

I'm not sure how much you'd benefit from rocket league, the extra smoothness might help a little.

Some of the benefit is simply lag reduction.
eg 1/60 = 16.666ms/frame
1/144 = 6.9444ms/frame

Assuming the game pushes information that fast, eg someone pops around a corner right after your last frame and the game is ready to update your next frame you gain a little under 10ms regardless of perceived smoothness or not.

Useful for shooters and anything twitch, the rest is up to how you personally notice the smoothness or not.

It's a shame there are no big pc gaming stores you can go test monitors and mice at

There is definitely a big difference with high refresh rate monitors.

I didn't realize the difference when I first played on a 144hz monitor in a cafe in Taiwan at first. But for days afterwards, 60hz felt very laggy.

I ended up choosing this 27inch Dell 1440p. 144hz 1ms response. I went between this and the ACER Predator 1440p. The predator gets some pretty amazing reviews for those who get a good panel out of the box, but I couldn't justify over $200 more for IPS over a TN panel when all I do is web browse and game. If I did some photo work or video editing I think the predator would have been worth it but I think the Dell will do the trick just fine for me. Also see a lot of people saying the RMA % is huge on the Predator. Could take multiple tries to get a good panel out of the box. Sounds like way to much of a PITA for me to deal with.

I found this GPU. MSI Duke gtx 1080. sexy as ****. was only sold in Asia until recently. It's apparently the same PCB as the MSI gaming X 1080 but it looks better, has better cooling, and is $100 cheaper. Also includes For Honor or Wildlands, but so do all the other 1080's. I'll be going with Wildlands

So only ryzen 7s are being released right away. Those are way to much of a chip for me.. Was more interested in the 5 series. Sounds like it might be a bit before we get a release/more info on those..

Sigh all I need is motherboard/CPU and ram. Think I might just go with a 7700k now and cry in 3 months when the price drops.

i have the predator. RMA is indeed pretty large (though seemingly not quite as bad as the rog swift which uses the same panel), but it depends how anal you are. obviously if anyone is going down this route i'd recommend buying locally at somewhere with a good returns policy. i didn't but got away with it (some minor BLB but in the end i just told myself to get over it and now never see it).

i play quakeworld pretty competitively so having 144hz is imperative. i actually have this OC'ed to 165, whether it makes that much of a difference, who knows.

Just got the corded Logitech G403 Prodigy and really like it. I've tried the G502 proteus core, g-pro, and deathadder chroma. As someone with big hands, the chroma/502 were comfortable with my hands, and are what I've used primarily over the past couple of years for mostly FPS games. I find the sensor/feet to be a little better on the logitech mice, but the 502 is really too heavy for FPS games, and the pro would give me hand cramps because it was so small. The Chroma just feels sticky on every mouse pad I've had (I've had two of the chromas as well).

the G403 is pretty light, and incredibly comfortable. It's also very light, and in limited time, has been awesome in cs:go and counter strike.

HeyGuys,

Not sure if this is the right place for my question, but can't hurt. I'm currently looking for a PC I can play games and stream on since my old school laptop is starting to crap out on me. I'm not looking for anything top of the line or anything, I just want to be able to play games like The Witness, Final Fantasy 14, and various other steam games. I'm looking for something like $500-$550 and know it'll be a basic thing I'll need to replace eventually.

Problem is I'm pretty bad with computers. I've been told that as long as it's got 8gb of memory with 2gb dedicated graphics I should be fine for what I want. I've never built a pc before, so if it's possible a prebuilt one is preferred, though if there's a huge difference in performance that can be had from building one for the same price I'm interested. I already have a monitor, so would just need the tower/keyboard/mouse.

Anything jump to mind?

You're gonna get a lot more bang for your buck building it yourself. There are small concerns though about part intercompatibility. I'd start from these websites and go from there - I'm happy to answer any questions.

If you're not interested/comfortable in buying parts and assembling it, I'd suggest getting a refurb desktop (look at something similar to the Inspiron 3650 on Dell's refurb website) and putting in an updated video card - the GTX 1050ti will run the games you want really nicely and more importantly, won't require you to upgrade the power supply on the computer. End result will be well under your budget and handle what you can throw at it.

PS: I'd suggest you look at getting the 4GB version of the video card vs the 2GB.

Need someone to point me to the most cost effective gaming mouse:

Want a decent mouse where you can customize the exact DPI, with a button that can cycle through the various DPI settings. don't care about anything else really.

logitech is the only brand I know that makes these but they're around 80 bucks. I don't mind spending that much, but is there anything cheaper I'm not aware of?

I think all of the good mice are around $80. There are some older models probably for $50.

Using a Logitech proteus g502 iirc. I like it, has adjustable weight and can set DPI plus different profiles that can be changed on the fly.

I have a Roccat Kone Pure and I think it's truly excellent (and has a perfect sensor IIRC, if not it's still a top sensor).

If you have the time, watch this channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGJ...Chgd-XMwcbZkiw

It's pretty much only gaming mice reviews and you has summary and genre specific videos in there.
