I love my corsair k95, but a few of the lights on the keys went out within a month. They offered an rma for it, but i didn't have a backup keyboard, so said screw it

I've had a Corsair mechanical and Logitech G15 both die quickly, and I hear a lot of bad things about Razers build quality with gamepads that I'm not sure I'd like to risk their keyboard. Looks like it's Das.

I don't really feel like venturing into the computer forum but wanted to share I upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 SP1 yesterday. So far no issues. In case anyone hasn't done it yet.

For those that have, any good features on 10 useful for gaming?

It's mostly under the hood - update on how windows manages stuff, and performance gains.

There's a built in game recorder now as well.

Mostly just DirectX 12 but it could still be a while before games starting taking full advantage.

There is also all sorts of Xbox Live integration type stuff but I haven't really touched any of it. You can get a Forza game for free from the Windows store though. It's not a full Forza game, sort of meant to be an XBL integration & tech demo to get people excited for the cross platform stuff coming in the next few years.

Make sure to read up on the privacy issues of Windows 10 and how turn off all the "phone home" features.

I have 2 of them for my 2 computers, one blue switch one brown switch. Significantly cheaper than most mechanical keyboards and it's amazing. Had a blackwidow, went to these and won't ever look back.

Is it normal that my gaming laptop always goes crazy when I play browsergames through google chrome. Whenever I log into Forge of Empires the cooler goes nutz. I mean shouldn't it handle these games with ease or are these games so demanding. I am always a bit worried when I play on my connected(HDMI) monitor and log in on the laptop screen to quickly do some stuff that this thing gets hot as hell. I checked the cooler inside and it wasn't that dusty.

You can use Task Manager to check CPU activity and other software to check GPU activity, if one or both of them are near max then I guess the games are really demanding for your system, if not you have a cooling problem

My G810 with Logitech's proprietary Romer-G switches has been excellent.

It seems to be a cooling problem but I opened it and there was almost no dust. I cleaned it a bit but it ddn' improve. Anything else I can do?

Not really, maybe it's normal for your laptop to get hot. Have you tried googling for people having similar problems with your laptop model? You can also try checking the internal temps with something like HWmonitor to see if they're acceptable http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Thoughts? Would buy a GTX 1060 founder's edition likely since everyone is charging 300-350 for their $249 cards.

I'm not 100% sure on the CPU cooler height/case size. mid-atx can hold an atx board, right? Also, was going to do whatever the usual cooler everyone uses, but the compatibility checker indicated it might not fit, hence the brand i'd never heard of.

Why get a normal SSD and also a not-NVMe M2 SSD ?

edit: even similar or less $ will get you a 512 not-NVMe Samsung, dual 256s seems even less useful.

I'd cut elsewhere and get a Samsung 95x NVMe obv.

i prefer one OS hdd and one for games. regular ssd for OS, M2 for games ldo.

not even sure what the different M2 specs are/mean/etc. I'm incredibly new to that area

NVMe is like 5x+ faster than SATA M2 in reads, 3x+ faster writes.

edit: and just partition to separate OS / other things if desired.

I like cases with the power supply on the bottom. The Fractal Design R5 is quite popular these days.

I got a 1060 non-FE for $249 from Amazon last week. https://www.nowinstock.net/computers...vidia/gtx1060/. Set up an alert for the brands you are willing to buy and vendors from which you are willing to buy, and then it will notify you when one is in stock.

One build guide I read said that 2100 was the most stable if you didn't plan on messing around with the BIOS settings, which I'd prefer not to. Is that not the case?

From May of this year, so I assumed it wasn't too out of date.

Thanks for the link! I'll have to check that out.

Still not 100% clear on the NVMe M2 stuff. Not sure how to ensure my board has the right connecter, proper amount of space for it, and which the best speeds/read/write are. x.x

Edit

From their site
Quote:
1 x M.2 Socket 3 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 2242/2260/2280 SATA & PCIe x4/x2/x1 SSD support)
So the 4-digit numbers are the length, that much I get. M key is the shape of the part that plugs in. Not sure about the rest or speeds or whatever.

If you bought a GTX 970, you can get $30 back per gpu cause nvidia's settling a class action lawsuit:

You would have to change a BIOS setting, but it is really simple and definitely worth it. You just change XMP from disabled to Profile 1. G.Skill guarantees their RAM for the top speed, so it isn't like you have to do any tweaking or overclock testing etc. Just set it and reboot.

Okay, updated to:
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/rCPdm8

Went with faster memory and a single, larger non-m.2 ssd. That'll be an upgrade for later on. Helps save money now and isn't too bad to swap out at a later point, which I wouldn't want to do with the CPU, for example.

Not sure what case to get. Saw a silent one from a company i'd never heard of, but it doesn't appear to be on sale anywhere yet. =-/
