Yea it wasn’t that hard you guys were right.

The 1060 is such good value right now. I have the one with dual fans, and it runs pretty cool. It’s twice the size of my old card so I was worried it wouldnt fit but it did (barely). Streamed destiny 2 at max settings, 1080p, in windowed mode with absolutely no issues. Load screens are almost instantaneous now.

At ~200$ right now I think this is the best budget card you can buy. I wanna fire up deus ex to see how it tackles that monstrosity.

laptop arrived a little earlier. Damn is this thing heavier than I was expecting. Or all my muscles have atrophied. Both equally as likely as the other.

Curious if there's anything I need to do to ensure the nvidia card runs during games vs the integrated intel chip. I don't think I do, as running a game for testing purposes had me over 100 fps, but just thought i'd ask

If your laptop recognizes the card it’s probably using it

Been going back and forth between a 144hz monitor at home and 60hz laptop screen, I have to say once you get used to the higher refresh rate, even 60hz feels really sluggish, even just doing Office stuff.

Just bought a 2TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD. Looking forward to not having to wait four minutes for EU4 to load!

Seems like its both amd and intel from what I've read. Though amd is denying it.

My Comcast Internet advertises speeds "up to 300 Mb/s." I'm on wired Internet and my speed tests are always around 90 Mb. So I figured that Comcast was just boasting.

Yesterday, my Internet goes down and I'm troubleshooting the connection with the rep from Comcast. They have me unplug the router and directly connect the modem to the laptop. I noticed that that the light indicating an ethernet connection went from amber to green. We are unable to fix the problem (it's likely a modem issue, but I need to get a new modem to make sure).

But the light changing from amber to green piqued my curiosity. So I checked the manual--green means Gigabit and amber means 100 Mbit. So I check the spec page for my router. The Ethernet ports are 100 Mb only! The entire time I've lived in this house, I was the reason my Internet speed was in the 90 Mb range, not Comcast.

Oh well, 90 Mb is still pretty fast and I probably won't bother replacing the router unless it happens to be the reason for my outage. Just found it funny that I am the reason my Internet is 1/3rd as fast as it could be. I simply assumed that any 802.11ac router would be Gigabit and never looked.

Is the router old? That’s kinda strange. I’d replace the hell out of it. That or spend less on internet.

Yeah it’s kind of astounding that an AC router would be 100 Mb on its ports instead of 1000.

Sigh, my gfx card died after 36 months and 3 weeks with 36 month warranty. Fun.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was so sure that all the AC routers were gigabit that I never bothered checking it. The weird thing is that the router isn't old. I bought it in 2016. And they still manufacture it: https://www.amazon.com/Asus-Wireless...dp/B01ATNHG36/

The replacement router is so much better. Wish I'd replaced it earlier. Not only do I get 300 Mb on my Ethernet connection, I even get 100 Mb on my 5 GHz connection! Not only that, but my WiFi actually reaches the front of the house. I needed to use a repeater with my old router because the signal died before reaching my daughter's computer.

So I've got a gaming laptop that I mostly use to play overwatch. I generally get 90 FPS and the display is 60hz. I had opportunity to play at a cyber cafe recently where the display was also 60hz but with faster response time and the hardware was putting out about 200 FPS. The experience was much better so now I want to upgrade to be able to run a 144hz monitor with 200+ FPS.

So I'm looking into building a desktop machine. My buddy said to just wait for Nvidia to release their new cards, but I'm impatient and who knows if those cards will be really available to purchase and how pricing will be. Gpu pricing is all jacked up because of supply issues and Bitcoin mining.

Thoughts on waiting? And 1060-1080 all send like they would get me the performance I want but there's big price jumps especially to the 1080 and 1080ti so I'm not sure what to pick.

What's in your gaming laptop? You might not even need a desktop and just need an external monitor.

Nah it's a fairly low end HP Omen. It's running an i7-7700hq and a 1050. Even on low settings with reduced render scale it tops out at around 110 FPS in overwatch.

Out of stock now but this is what you probably actually want, assuming your HP omen has a TB3 (even TB2 should be fine, though performance will be lower) port.

Thunderbolt performance penalty for 1070 is pretty minor (5-10%) if you use an external monitor. I have the exact box hooked. I get 120+ fps steady at 1440p with ultra setting. Typically right at 144 where I have it capped. When I play at 4k with ultra settings I get 80-120

The enclosure is effectively about ~$150.

There is a GTX 1080 version of this box too if you could somehow get it

One offered on Amazon for 1,000, which isn't awful since 1080 non-ti cards are going for 900-1000 now on Newegg.

I might actually end up sniping this one off Amazon...
