I was just lamenting this the other day. The announcement of Overwatch League, yet with nothing actually ready to go really put a damper on things

The best 'rest of world' teams appear to have better mechanical players than what I've seen from the best Korean teams. But the Korean teams are so much better coordinated. Plus I really like Meta Athena for having so many inventive strategies.

It's so hard to follow the game unless you're already decent at it yourself though. Just having some instant replays, and some kind of gamestate scoring system, would make it much more watchable. e.g. show percentage of remaining total health pool of a team, and % of ults (then have a count of 100% ult meters too). You can see who is winning, instead of having to squint at portraits off in the corner for thirty seconds while the game is being won or lost.

And it's hard to get excited about this city franchise idea. Lots of leagues have tried it in the past, and I don't think any of them have ever actually succeeded.

just bad luck: seagull has 25k viewer base, is the only huge streamer, leaves it to be a pro gamer

pro gaming career gets whacked because lol koreans and lol blizzard

unless he signed a baller contract, had to have lit so much money on fire. 25k viewers and a strong brand = many hundreds of thousands a year.

idk why anyone is committing to being a "pro" when it seems like there's way more money in full time streaming and being on a team that's cool with you streaming.

Ya, he is making a pretty questionable choice unless he comes from a lot of money. His stream is so absurdly popular, and he's quite good at it... he'd easily make > 500k a year just streaming 20+ hours a week. There's sort of no way moonmoon makes < 1 mil this year based on his sub count and donations, and I'd imagine seagull could make more since he gets far more viewers.

I think Seagull is actually making a smart choice. His "Pro" credentials do help him with building a streamer base.

And also from a psychological perspective, "pro" gaming activities are great as breaks and intensive practice when he is not streaming. There is also almost certainly subsidized travel that really makes life more enjoyable.

I think the choice is similar to how online poker pros travel and hit live tourneys all the time although their hourlies are (well, were at least) higher online. It's good for mental health if nothing else.

sure the quality of life is better, but Seagull's prize winnings are around $15k at most. so whatever you think his contract is (100k? 200k? somehow more?) thats a lot fewer hundred thousand dollars than streamer life.

moonmoon puts in 40 hours a week and has a biphasic sleep schedule. that sounds like absolute hell. but that seems to be what he's into, and he's gotta be raking in all the gold.

i come from this thinking that blizzard hasn't really build overwatch to be a successful e-sport, and there's only so much time you get to build a huge brand on overwatch, which means limited time. limited time means get those monies now while you can.

It's just a massive opportunity cost to play pro vs streaming. Even if he won every tournament, streamed on the side, got a few more endorsements, etc... it's hard to imagine that even coming close to putting in say 4 hours 6 days a week of streaming (for seagull).

That being said, I don't really think streaming is going anywhere at this point. I'd wager that in a few years, even if OW is on the backburner to some other FPS he could make a really solid income streaming OW or a different game just because he's so nasty at it. Maybe it's not as risky as I think.

As a 22 year old, the option to put a million bucks in the bank would be so amazing. You just never know if the opportunity will still be there.

While Orisa is going live for quick play and arcade, she will not be active in Competitive for one week.

This is the right move even if it makes me a little less excited for Orisa tonight

This is a good decision. I don't think it'll stop people who have never touched her from playing her in comp, but should help a bit with that.

I'm on Overwatch withdrawal, too, and it's only been two days. On the bright side, I've been busy with fun things, so I can sacrifice other fun things.

Looking forward to trying Orisa. Have only used her a couple times on the PTR - should be fun to get going on QP. I've been practicing Zarya on QP and have been enjoying her. Learning to strike a balance between being aggressive to build my energy and not being too reckless and just charging into the middle and dying. Boy, when her energy is up into the 80's and 90's, she can just melt through anything.

Orisa is really fun to play. Whether she's awesome or crappy, who knows at this point, but I know I enjoyed using her last night.

I just watched a Stylosa video about how Orisa does not replace Reinhardt - he explains the differences and where she is strong and weak.

I scrolled down quickly to the comments section and saw one that was amazing: "A dildo does not replace a penis."

Played with the most annoying guy last night. He had hit grandmaster this season and was back to diamond, every 2 seconds was him bragging about being GM, or every time he died saying something like "it took 2 of them to kill me, what are you guys doing" and constantly asking who had gold or silver elims.

I eventually lost it and started tossing casual digs at the guy "maybe if you tell us you were grandmaster 3 more times well do better" "You sure like to run your mouth" eventually he felt embarrassed and stopped being so annoying and we won.

Meanwhile I'm on pharah and the other team had to go mcree/soldier/torb and one point even a widow to stop me.

He kept saying "pharah you know they have 3 hitscans"... "I'm still doing well, and enjoy a challenge". He had no concept of how hard the other team was focused on me and thus not being able to put together any coherent strategy.

lol @ "it took 2 of them to kill me"

even when I take out 3 or 4 of the enemy team, my team often loses the rest of the fight

Every time he died he spent the entire time dead and walking back berating the team and bragging.

As a Zen main, it SHOULD be that someone on our team takes out 2 or 3 players 'by themselves'. I have discords going, healing going, and I'll sometimes get a couple of kills. I'm clearly not meant to get several kills per fight, and I'm the most DPS of the supports. Similarly, Reinhardt can win fights without kills.

of course

also, kills vs deaths is harder to evaluate in this game than e.g. league of legends, since everyone who did damage gets credit so a lot more kills occur than deaths

going 3 for 1 might be breaking even

The lack of meaningful stats really hurts the dumb players. You have a really intense game with few picks and once you get a few you have Lucio saying "guys I have gold elims our damage is bad", when he's done 1-5% damage and got credit for the elim. If he had gold damage done that would be a different story, but 99% of people complaining or bragging about medals care about elims and nothing else.

The lack of more advanced stats in game really helps add fuel to bad analysis, and we all know how bad the general public is with statistical analysis.
