What's the best you've tried so far? Will it ever overtake consoles and PC gaming? Where do you see the technology going?

Contact lenses or ocular implants hopefully

The dream.

There's already a thread though. It says Oculus but discussion is general VR. http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/75...adset-1325612/

Have a vive. Haven't tried oculus or gear.

I can't see it ever taking over console/pc gaming because, well, it is console/pc gaming, just a new way to experience it. Certain types of games are already "there", like cockpit games(racing, space shooter, etc[WHERE THE **** IS MECHWARRIOR VR]). Open world type games may never fully be "there" due to space restrictions. strategy games add nothing relevant other than maybe perspective(I'd love xcom VR where I could stand over the mission and walk around). Other types of "games" are basically unique to VR and already holy **** good but its hard to convey that to somebody without actually getting them to try it for a moderate-extended amount of time(tilt brush, soundstage). I could definitely see a resurgence of story-telling adventure style games that are built for VR that hasn't had the time to really develop yet(things like Vanishing Realms, The Gallery, etc that are all early access episodic content right now).

Shooters are a mixed bag. Don't get me wrong, stationary'ish wave shooters are plenty fun(love holopoint, raw data, brookhaven experiment, would LOVE a Time Crisis VR) but they're sort of limited by the physical space thing. Games like Onward are interesting but locomotion is always gonna be weird as long as you're using something other than you're feet to move, just creates a disconnect in the whole VR experience.

The thing that separates VR from previous non-standard gaming experiences give it staying power, imo. Porn gets mentioned a lot, I've tried it and its good for a laugh but honestly its kind of dumb(thats not my dick). 360/vr videos are pretty cool and music videos could be trippy as **** in VR(check out "Surge" on steam, probably more I haven't gone hunting for more VR content in a while). Stuff like this doesn't need 10x10 and cameras/base stations to work and can be perfectly fine on phone VR (Gear/Daydream). There is room for that market to grow without having to shoehorn traditional game-type content onto the platform).

"current" tech has a lot to improve on just getting lighter and cordless before we get to the "future" tech like implants or transmitting experiences straight to your brain type stuff. Mixing in Kinect-type tech could go a long way to improve "presence" especially in multiplayer games without adding additional holdable/wearable accessories. I'm pretty excited to see where its going.

as for right now, I typically only bust out the Vive when I have friends over. It's cool tech but right now its kind of a party-game type thing even though everything is basically single player locally. No reason that can't change with one person having a VR experience and other people "playing" with them on a console/pc locally.

All I know is the Samsung commercials look cool but it's not something that looks like its worth paying for.

Jay Rosenkrantz is involved in some kind of start up involving VR it seems, he tweets often about how cool it is.

Multiplayer Mechwarrior sounds like a killer app.

If VR were laptops, here's where we'd be right now:

it will be huge, just give it time.

I think this generation of gaming it will be a sorta a niche novelty, but will grow significantly quickly within the next generation or two.

I haven't gotten a chance to try any of these generation's VR technology though.

VR will explode not just because of gaming though, its non-gaming applications will be just as good if not better (porn, virtual tourism, meetings, etc.)

I don't see traditional non-VR gaming going away because I don't think people will necessarily want every game to be this completely immersive, highly active experience. The ability to just sorta lay like a blob on the couch with a controller and play a game is something enough people will always want.

It's a little like how mobile games exists and are very successful and are a completely different thing from console gaming. You're going to have separate, successful markets that appeal to people wanting different experiences and play styles, with differing levels of time and commitment.

I've hesitated getting into VR or buying any equipment. It's just still so young that I'm afraid of wasting hundreds of dollars a year because the technology will be updating so fast.

Also, I'm not sure it's really going to make me enjoy gaming anymore. I hate wearing headsets or headphones. It always annoys me and I can imagine wearing a VR headset for more than an hour is going to be really annoying for me.

I'll still watch what's going one from afar and might test out a few things but I'm not ready to invest any real time or dollars into it.

I agree but what if you were able to move, look, and interact with the environment with a controller that way you can still lie down on the couch like a blob? Less physically interactive but still immersive in that the image is all around you.

My buddy is a pretty hardcore gamer (probably 20-30 hours a week) and this sums it up for him. I tried it out over at his place and it seems amazing, so I can see why its a party-game type thing. He says he barely ever uses it unless its to show it off when he has people over who want to check it out. What you didn't mention is it also takes a little while to set up (unless you have a dedicated gaming space/area), so when you are coming home from work or school and want some instant gratification of gaming you are going to sit at your PC and fire up overwatch, not spend 5-10 minutes making space in your room/area and setting it up so you can play a game that isn't as fun.

Tried out the VR porn too and from the few vids i saw it was hot but the perspective was off, i felt like a giant or something

I tried my first headset today on my buddies PSVR unit. I had pretty low expectations but was actually really impressed. The RE7 kitchen demo was a legit really scary and super cool experience.

Obviously this generation is just stage one but the possibilities for the future of this tech are really exciting.

Yeah, I tried Vive and I was really really impressed by the hardware and technology but all the software available felt like tech demos not quite past proof of concept stages yet.

Costs are getting really close to 400~500 sweet spot for mass adoption that could prompt software development though.
