"its not mainstream now?"
:-)

No. I'm not sure if you know what mainstream means."

I get nervous even when I lean over a little to look out the lower windows in my Lakon-6 in Elite Dangerous, though.

I imagine those IMAX style simulator rooms like Body/Star Wars at Disney World will go by the wayside with these things. And in ten years or so we'll be able to put on a pair of unobtrusive wrap around glasses like Glass and bone conducting speakers to get a mix of VR and AR where real life stuff can be rendered or superimposed on the simulation. Then you could have a theme park roller coaster do something like in that video above but you'll be able to look around at your friends and see their reactions. Or walk around your town and have the static scenery replaced with an overlayed simulation of 18th century Paris or somesuch.

Neal Stephenson needs to write a more modern take on Snow Crash. Diamond Age nanotechnology is still a long ways off, but the Metaverse concept is showing its age.

Samsung announced Gear VR today. Here's the Engadget hands-on.

Quote:
Facebook's Oculus VR is creating the Rift. Sony's PlayStation is creating Project Morpheus. Google is... well, Cardboard exists. And now Samsung's getting in on the virtual reality action, announcing Gear VR at IFA 2014 today in Berlin, Germany. Gear VR is a virtual reality headset with a removable front cover where Samsung's newly announced Note 4 slips in, acting as the screen. Paired with adjustable lenses built into the headset and a comfy strap, Gear VR turns Samsung's next Note into a virtual reality machine. And what's the first thing you'll see when you strap on Gear VR? Oculus VR's handiwork. The company behind the re-birth of virtual reality is partnering with Samsung on Gear VR: Samsung handles the hardware; Oculus offers up its software prowess.

Unlike Sony's, Oculus' and Google's VR projects, though, Samsung's delivering a consumer product this year with Gear VR. But is it too early?

First things first, let's answer that question: No, it's not too early. While there are major technological limitations with mobile VR -- horsepower, among many other issues -- Samsung's Note 4 is a shockingly capable device for virtual reality experiences. In our time with it, video looked sharp; there was no perceptible lag between turning my head and what I saw on screen; and navigating the UI was a snap. Is it hot? Yes. Are the graphics less impressive on Gear VR than on, say, Sony's Project Morpheus or Oculus VR's latest dev kit? Absolutely. No question about it. But is it capable of providing a great virtual reality experience, regardless of those handicaps? I believe it is.

I know nothing about these screens and/or technology and (but) I just can't see how you can get a good vr-experience by basically putting your mobile phone in front of your eyes.

I tend to agree with that, but I'd like to try it out.

If you think of the phone as just a monitor, then a note 4 is a damn good one. It's QHD, and even if you had to split it into two halves, one for each eye, it's still better than most displays that a "normal" (read no tech enthusiast) person is usually around.

If you just think of it as a phone in a weird pair of goggles then your missing the point imo. It's neat that it can do both phone things and now it looks like become the screen on a vr headset.

I believe the DK2 is the screen from a Note 3 (modified somewhat obv).

Phone screen attached to a high end PC is the rift in a nutshell. Lenses, accelerometers, gyros, etc. That's VR.

I don't know how good the experience will be with this, but the most important thing is that it will simply get VR in the hands of more people, even if only to try it. Google Cardboard is pretty freakin' meh, but as soon as somebody who has never experienced VR tries it, they get it. They see Cardboard for the low end experience that it is, but they immediately understand the possibilities of VR after using it. It will be the same with this. The Oculus brand will be everywhere on this thing and they will spend the next year telling the world, "And that's just with your phone!!! Just wait until you buy our consumer version and attach it to your PC!!!"

I'd like to see how these things perform under real gaming conditions. Next gen graphics, complete AI systems, with internet multiplayer connectivity. It's awesome that the tech is so immersive that people can lose their **** on a virtual roller coaster but let's be honest, we all want next gen multiplayer VR skyrim.

I'd be interested to demo a kit, but no way in hell i'm buying one without a full blown hands-on with a real game.

I assume you are talking about standalone units. Multiplayer, AI, etc. isn't a challenge for PC VR. The Rift isn't a processing unit. Standalone is years away from having the power for AAA games, obviously. On PC, though, you've been able to play Skyrim for some time now. Whether or not you can play a multiplayer Elder Scrolls game is simply up to Bethesda and whether or not they add native VR support to their next Elder Scrolls game.

Games need to be made from the ground up for VR for the best experience, but there is no shortage of games that work with third party drivers currently. Some of these are better than others in VR, but this is just the list for VorpX. TriDef and Vireio support each support a long list of games as well. I haven't touched many games on this list due to a shortage of time and mostly playing Elite Dangerous, but I have been enjoying some Mass Effect:

A lot of casuals are under the impression that this thing is stand alone. It's a pretty big misconception that they're going to have to really make note of when doing marketing for the consumer model.

How is Mass Effect? I've been looking for an excuse for another playthrough, and that would do it

Cool. I didn't really realize it was plug and play. Thought it was just demos like the roller coaster and eve shoot me up. Would love to play skyrim. Anyone here use it to play mainstream AAA titles?

I just finished migrating my system, (desk to cockpit) an hour a go, it took ALL DAY, did a quick vid.

Its pretty sick guys, I support IT systems in investment banks plus tens years... you think I would do this in my home if it was not worth it....

Its off the hook, if you mange to get to try one you will be thinking about nothing else, Warthunder is truly insane, its like real. Im actually right by the mill hill RAF Museum,.

I am thinking about contacting them and putting this in their staff room or some thing for a week, they deserve it and it pay respect to past and lives given in air combat.

Elite and dangerous and Warthunder are enough that you can drop £5k for this and not even blink, its that impressive, also don't take my word for it go speak to any one you like that has tried or owns one.

Every home or pocket on the planet will have one in 5 to 10 years there is no question about that, no question at all.

CV-release planned before summer 2015 according to techradar (citing 'multiple sources' with OR 'refusing to comment').

Not sure what a 'beta'-version of hardware for consumers means though...

Cliffs:
- Release planned for April 2015 but may be pushed to summer (which obviously means it will be)
- Limited initial release (which probably means most of us can add a number of months to that date before we can hope for one...)
- $200 - $400 pricetag
- "significant increase over the DK2's 1080p display, with a refresh rate that will hit 90Hz or higher"
