edit: I'm not the guy in the video just posting because he gives a great impression of what I was feeling.

That was good.

I thought this video below was pretty cool in capturing the reactions of some users that have tried it. I think it shows how much potential awesomeness it has considering the surface has probably only just been scratched with regards to the systems upside.

El Kabong, I was curious if you think that the Rift has a chance to be more entertaining than PS4/XBOX1.

If you could only get one system in 2014, and the extra waiting time wasnt a factor, would you wait to see how polished and what the rift had to offer?

omni competitor.

this thread has me really excited about gaming in 2 years time, after feeling that the xboxOne/ps4 was the first generation since nes I wouldn't be bothering with.

Well first of all Sony and Microsoft would be insane not to sign a deal with Occulus or produce a VR of their own, there's already rumors of Sony doing it. I'm way more excited about Rift than PS4/Xbone because I don't see any point in getting either console any time soon. It really depends on your situation though. I have a PC, 360, PS3 and a Wii U so I have no shortage of ways to play games. Right now PS4 and Xbone are offering me nothing new that I can't do better on a PC. After seeing what games people were getting in the PS4 thread, I asked why people were even getting it at launch. No one answered. Maybe people thought I was trolling but I was generally asking. None of them were getting PS4 exclusives. Most of the games worth getting are multi platform and will still probably run better on PC. There are no next gen console exclusives that interest me at the moment apart from DriveClub and Forza 5. I'll end up getting both eventually but not until either a price drop or a must have exclusive is released.

Rift is awesome and I'll be preordering the consumer model but it's not going to replace how I play games. I'm super excited for it and every time I try stuff on the dev unit I love it. It brings so much more life to the game world because you really do feel like you're right there. I'd love to use it to walk around Columbia or San Andreas but I wouldn't use it to play the whole game. It's still not at the point where it's 100% comfortable. It's a little heavy, it doesn't track all movements and the low res screen is pretty ugly on the dev units. All of that should be fixed with the consumer models though.

There's a few other apps outside of games I'm really looking forward to as well. Being able to walk around real cities and landmarks is going to be cool as hell. There's a prototype for watching films in a cinema. As stupid as that sounds it was actually pretty awesome. I've heard about people developing training sims for it. It's just a really cool piece of hardware with so many uses that anyone with any interest at all should consider buying.

TLDR: Good PC + Rift > PS4/Xbone.

Yeah the Rift really does look incredible. I'm actually a little surprised it took so long for something like this to come out. The possibilities are absolutely endless.

I can just imagine playing a game like Amnesia with that thing. Incredibly horrifying.

Even games that aren't first person would be so much better with a high res version of the Oculus Rift for the simple reason that you are completely immersed in the game without anything distracting you. So so excited for the consumer model to be released.

What does it cost to get your hands on a dev kit btw? And still no sights on an official release date?

One of my friends from HS was one of the programmers/developers for this game. I knew he has done work for a bunch of stuff at his studio before, but this was the first time he direct linked me to something he had worked on/was gonna be seen.

So sick.

I got to try this at pax and was super disappointed. I think there were two different demos and that I got stuck with the ****ty one.

They strap the thing on your head and make sure it's put on correctly. Then next thing I know some crappy formula one racing starts up and I'm in the cockpit of a lonely car doing a time trial on a low resolution track.

Some people were being handed a controller so I presume they got to at least control the car or perhaps play something else entirely

I wonder if we will reach a point in the next few years where we can become so immersed in a horror game that it could create long lasting psychological problems.

I got to try out an Oculus Rift this weekend for a whole evening,

Overall i'm quite positive about the experience, even though it wasn't as great as all the hype on the internet led me to believe.

Part of that reason may be because i was using a dev kit with a pretty low res. I heard the consumer version will be with a much better resolution, so i'm very interested in that.

It's easy to see the potential of this technique however, and it will change gaming forever if they can get it to work at an acceptable quality. Especially during Half Life 2 i was amazed at how much more immersive your surroundings become. 'More' doesn't really cut it though, the entire experience is brought to a whole new level. In that sense the Oculus really gives you an insight in what the gaming-future is gonna be like.

One of the biggest challenges will be to design controllers and games that will make moving around in the VR-experience a more natural feel. Having used both the helmet in HL2 to look around, and the mouse and wsad to move around gave me nausea that lasted a solid two hours

All in all, the oculus wasn't quite the holy grail yet i made it out to be in my mind beforehand, but it sure is a great step in the right direction.

Razer Hydras are almost there as the perfect companion to the Rift. I too had a lot of trouble using a KB/M with but the Hydras felt natural.

Link has a trailer for The Forest.

"The Forest is an open-world adventure where survival from the elements is as important as survival from the enemy. Players have to chop down trees to build a camp, start a fire to keep warm, scavenge food to prevent starvation and find and plant seeds to grow crops."

They give a 2014 release "date" for the game, but from the OR website:

"We haven’t announced an exact date or quarter for the consumer product’s release, but we promise we’re working tirelessly to make it available as soon as possible."

Still plenty of time for me to complete my man-cave with padded walls perfect for flailing around while wearing the goggles.

So exciting to see all of this movement with VR technology. Sony's HMZ appears to be around $1k, let's hope this and the rift are more affordable.

With multiple folks working on units I'd imagine the price will drop over the next year or two as more are actually released.

New, and much improved, version has been showed at CES 2014 (still not consumer version) :

Cliffs: OLED, higher resolution, positional tracking and practically no motion blur.
