I keep reading about people using this and experiencing motion sickness, dizziness, and similar. I've also read that the motion sickness can take awhile to set in, so initial impressions might be great but long-term usage is less great. Do we know at this point if they are going to be able to "fix" this? Seems like it could be a pretty huge barrier to success.

I got to try it out. First off, it's amazing. I was going in with big expectations and it didn't dissapoint. I only got to use it for about half an hour and only tried a space shooter type game and the tuscany demo. The space shooter was a lot of fun. It was basically just a dog fight in space. You move around with the controller and use the rift to look around. It felt very natural and was a lot of fun. The tuscany demo is amazing. We had the razer hydras hooked up. Basically you just walk around a villa and interact with items. For example there's a basketball you can bounce and throw around and some books and logs you can throw in a fire. It's a bizarre feeling because you really feel like you're there.

There were problems though that should be ironed out before the retail version. The picture is very low res and goes out of focus quite a bit. It's not a good looking picture. It also blurs quite a lot if you move your head quickly. The biggest problem for me is that it doesn't track when you lean left or right. Everyone that tried it felt sick. It's playing with your senses and when it puts them out of wack you really feel like ****. I had to sit down for a couple minutes to recover.

It's comfortable and didn't give me any problems with anything like that. I'm really excited for an updated version. 1080p with better head tracking is going to be amazing. I'll be shocked if Sony or MS aren't all over this in the future. It really is like nothing I've ever experienced. Playing a game like Skyrim would be insane.

Here's some pics of what you get in the dev kit and how the picture looks running through a regular monitor.

The virtuix omni kickstarter went live today. It's an omnidirectional treadmill designed to be used with a VR device.

I would be interested if you could give us an update after you have used it for perhaps a couple of hours at a time. I have heard about a number of people who used it without problem for 20-30 minutes at a time but started experiencing motion sickness during long sessions. Thanks for the comments and pictures.

The motion sickness and overall feeling of yuck I've been hearing about seem to be a genuine concern. I'm not sure how 1080p would make much of a difference with that.

Blurry images that go in/out of focus and have non-consistent frame rates are the main causes of motion sickness. If those problems are fixed with the consumer release then most cases of motion sickness should go away.

I won't be able to use it again for another week or so but the main reason I didn't play it for longer than half an hour was because it was making me feel nauseous.

I don't think low res is the main reason for motion sickness at all. It's the lack of translation tracking that causes people to be sick. I felt fine until I tried to crouch down or lean to my side. As soon as I did that I instantly felt like **** and had to sit down.

I'm not sure where I mentioned low resolution causes motion sickness?

I wear glasses and when my prescription starts to get old I begin to feel different. There's a point where it messes with your brain. Your brain expects something to be clear based on previous experience and when it's not it tries to compensate but makes you feel weird and dizzy.

Also having fast moving blurry images that are out of focus will just make it way worse.

The blurry images are a result of the low res screens refresh rate. The pixels don't change colour fast enough. Fixing that will be easy. I didn't experience any drops in frame rate although I only tried 2 demos but it's definitely not a problem on the rift's end.

I wear glasses/contacts too and know exactly what you mean. I'm not disagreeing that it contributes to the motion sickness because it definitely does, I'm just saying it's not the biggest factor. From my experience, the lack of translation tracking is something that hits you hard as soon as you experience it and easily the most important problem they need to fix. Yesterday crouching and leaning instantly made everyone feel terrible.

What is translation tracking exactly? When I think of translation "stuff" I think about changing the perspective of whatever needs to be translated.

Is it because when you lean in game the perspective of the game doesn't change but since it's hooked up to your head your brain thinks you're leaning but you don't see what would happen if you leaned in real life?

Yeah this is exactly what it is. Your body is telling your brain that you're leaning but you're eyes aren't. As soon as I did it, it hit me and it was an awful feeling. It's not only leaning but also crouching. If you use the hydras then the tuscany demo had a crouch option so that helps a bit.

Nope. They just showed the 1080p prototype.
Some Sony guys said they're fans of the rift so there's been lots of speculation but no announcements.
