it seems people were thinking ~$499 but with palmer's comments on subsidising today people are getting optimistic and thinking about $399 again.

i think/hope you'll be comfortably in under £500 when all is said and done.

who knows, i'm likely buying regardless but i wish they would realise the price now so i can make an informed decision instead of making it at 3am australian time

Lol - price says $59900.

$599 is about $100 more than what I figured "at worst". Shipping in March... I might just wait a while longer and see what Vive comes up with after all.

$599.99. I was expecting $499 at most. I'm on the fence for first gen, regardless. I think I'm going with PSVR and waiting for Pascal /4k / eye tracking for PC. This tech is going to move so fast that purchasing every iteration could get very expensive. I hope a couple friends pre-order, though.

It's a shame, I was really excited for this but at $914 after tax and shipping in Canada I'm just priced out. I might consider swinging it if I didn't have to put another $800 or so into PC upgrades to run it. (Actually probably not, that's just too expensive.)

Who would've thought that adding a carry case, amp, dac, headphones and xbox one controller would make it more expensive than it needed to be? lol.

I'm having second thoughts now with the $599 price tag, and also because the website isn't letting me get past the screen where I enter my credit card info.

So true. Maybe sometime down the road soon, they'll have a barebones SKU or something.

****ing new tech. Should have expected even worse, really. Blu-ray players used to cost $1,000 lol.

Yah, it's not so much that I'm surprised at the price, just disappointed. I would have loved to have been an early adopter on this one, I think it will be a big part of the future of entertainment. We still have the playstation iteration as well as the HTC Vive to look forward to. All these will help lower the price of the tech overall and I look forward to getting one eventually.

I remember buying a DVD player for around $600 back in '98, I thought it was so badass you could pause without getting the weird squiggly lines you got with VHS back then. :P

Excited about this, but I would need a new PC plus the OR.

I'm so starved for VR that I threw in an order anyway...

Evidently (will still cancel my order if this turns out not to be the case), they have included local VAT in the price they're selling at so I won't have to pay the additional 25%.

If so, then the price is actually pretty much exactly the same for me as the USD one, so while it's still a lot higher than I thought it would be, at least I'm not getting additionally screwed as I initially thought.

The hours I spent waiting meant delivery went from March to May though... fml.

they were only ever going to ship on 28th march anyway so hopefully you're not that far behind

I have high end headphones, I don't need a travel case... but I can see how this makes it a better consumer product. Just gonna wait I think .

Ah, thanks - that makes it a little better

I see Luckey saying that people are likely to move up in the queue as fake orders are sorted out too.

Yes, it would be nice if they offered a stripped down version as well - I don't want the games, already have a controller (several in fact, as will most 'serious gamers' who are likely to want this early) and high end earphones so I have no need for all of that.

Noob question.. Is a tie-in with the Xbone completely out of the question at any point?

Would it have the necessary juice?

Completely out of the question, it'd need the xb1 usb chips that authenticate to in the currently shipping units already.

They are also completely incapable of delivering 90fps at 2160x1200, unless they give you virtua fighter level graphics.

I can't be the only one who thinks this is way over priced.

In the same way Microsoft gave Sony the win on Xbox One vs PS4, all Sony has to do is launch their vr at like $399 or less and they insta win.

Pretty much everyone thinks it's overpriced, especially given what was said/hinted at about price from OR previously.

I don't think the price of Sonys PS4-set will matter that much though - the pc is wastly superior when it comes to this and the main competition for OR there is the Vive and that's likely to be even more expensive than the Rift.

i don't think it's really that expensive, it's just that people had expectations given the many earlier statements by oculus about it being in the $350 ballpark, $600 being too expensive, etc. in fairness they were subtly changing their tune in recent months but weren't saying anything concrete.

i can't imagine the case + xbox controller adding more than $25-30 to the cost, but wanting to control the audio experience, improved screens over DK2 etc have clearly bumped things up.

my favourite part of this is the $132 USD delivery fee to australia, awesome.
