If you guys like VR stuff, John Carmack (one of the best game devs of our time) spent like 2 hours talking about it along with his thoughts on the oculus rift at last year's QuakeCon.
I've been following this for some time now. I've come close several times to ordering a dev kit. I guess I would have one already if I had ordered one when this first kicked off. The only thing that holds me back is that they say the manufacturers of the high-end displays they really want won't even talk to them for an order of 10,000 or whatever they need for dev kits right now. So I think there will be a major difference in resolution between the dev kits and the finished product as long as they can gather up however many preorders or the funding they will need to get somebody to provide what they want. They've stated multiple times that they want to keep the retail price around $300 so we might as well wait.
Also, if they were to somehow partner up with Microsoft and/or Sony I imagine they would have something on the market within a year. I don't know if that's going to be doable with next gen consoles, though.
I think microsoft is trying its own thing on next generation gaming. Didn't they release a prototype video of them projecting a game in your actual room? Instead of looking into VR glasses they went for more of a holodeck style, but I'm not sure how well it would work for consumers since people tend to have junk in their rooms.
I always thought this thread was about a game called Oculus Rift, cuz I'm sure one like that exists. Needs a thread title change to point out that its a system for virtual reality or whatnot.

Pro tip: If you see a thread title referencing Playstation 3/4 and/or Xbox 360/720, they are not about a game, but game consoles.

in other news, the sky is blue. he was saying most (me included until a few days ago) don't know what oculous rift is, so we assumed it was a game, not a new VR system.
Our programmer got his today, I haven't tried it but here are a few of his comments. I just copied and pasted parts of our convo. I get to try it next week so will give my own tp. I can't wait to try it. Keep in mind these are the dev units. The retail units will be much more refined as well as 1080p screens. Also if you plan on getting one I highly recommend getting some razer hydra's to go with it.
"It's amazing."
"I don't usually get motion sickness but its very disorienting. I almost fell over a few times. Had to sit down"
"It's low res, you can see the gaps between the pixels and it blurs a heap when you turn quickly, but man, you can see how amazing this will be when they do one properly."
"I tried the rift coaster, kinda neat. But it does something weird which I noticed in preview vids before I got my rift, which I dont like. The head orientation doesnt follow the cart so when you go around a corner, and the cart rotates sideways, your head stays horizontal which is a bit weird"
"Tried a helicopter demo, really really cool. That with a hydra controller tied to my chest allows positional tracking so you can lean out the window and look down at the skiids"
"The best one so far, the sixsense tuscany demo with the hydras. So you can pick up books and bounce basketballs. Really cool. Just need to have space because I almost fell over when I turned on crouch, which when you put your hand down to pick up something on the floor would auto crouch you. And that sudden crouch was so weird. The 3d effect is really cool, being able to see the candles and particles in the air."
"Tried mirrors edge, its not the best. looks really cool, but your movement is based on where you look, so its hard to look around as that will change your direction. When it cuts to a cutscene, its really disorienting."
"Just tried tf2, almost made me puke. too much tonight for me I think."
Going to be great when games get patched to run well with it.
Super mad/Kabong will be great to hear your thoughts when you gets your hands on it..
The whole motion sickness thing is a worry for me, I did get it a little on some of the simulation rides at Disney/Universal years ago. Have been on other simulators since with no problems. Will be gutted if this new tech makes me wanna vom!
Golden Eye on the N64 was ruined for me because of this! Still loved it though
