Do you play at all? Smb3d is almost worth it by itself it's that good. Depends on what the used games are too.

Yup, I play. More of a PC guy, but that's probably because our newest console is a Wii.

The two games that come with the bundle are Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. I priced out (again, depends on availability and my math) Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros., and Zelda: Twilight Princess to get the total in my previous post. I'm assuming the bundle plus one game get me another free (in the 2 for 1 deal), then two more games get another free.

Yeah I mean with those games - especially if you like splatoon and/or Mario maker, are going to last years. Online play for both will be supported well after switch rolls out

They shut down Wii servers a year and a half after the Wii U came out so it's not a given online will be supported for too long. Still, it's going to be at least a few years from now.

The third game for N64 was released over a month later. And basically 3 months later at Christmas, there were still only 8 games available for the system.

Yea this is why I always say to you idiots that PS1 is better depending on your metric. PS1 was without a doubt a better system to own in the '90s. Now with the luxury of full libraries at our disposal, N64 is arguably better (and the graphics hold up better) as a retro option, but at the time it was lame af except for the 1-2 weeks surrounding big new releases. PS1 had solid "B" games (at least) almost every week.

Eh. I played it once, so that's 25-40 hours (estimate based on Banjo-Kazooie being 20-25 hours with an actual clock), and that's about it.

It's a great game (the best) but I don't think there's anything inherently more replayable in there than there would have been in many contemporary PS1 games. In fact, PS1 had the games that tended to be significantly longer (like epic RPGs) or had more explicit replayability (like Resident Evils).

PS1 was awful with the worst iteration of their controller (which still sucks).

the replayability for me was from stuff like finding all the stars, or exploring stages and trying things from many different angles. The atmospheres were just amazing at that time.

Depends how you consume games. I know plenty of people who buy 2 games a month and play them and then don't touch them; a stream of B and C games might be good for that. I tend to buy like 8 or 10 games over the life of a console - and usually just the very best ones, and then play them into the ground. So a small top-heavy library suits that better.

If you like Mario Golf, the Hot Shots golf series is basically the same and in some ways better. Highly recommend.

"PS1 was awful" is complete idiocy and should be bannable.

Sure, I found all the stars and it took 25-40 hours. If you were 8 at the time then perhaps it took a lot longer or there was joy in repeating it over and over.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with growing up on 2D NES Mario, arcade donkey kong, etc, seeing it all transported to 3D with explorable environments totally changed my world view of games.

Oh this again. I'm an admitted Nintendo fanboy but for me the PS1's library crushes it. The N64 definitely has a decent amount of classics but some of those classics don't hold up well at all and the rest of its library is full of racing games and garbage.

The PS1 isn't short on great games. 2D games like SOTN, FF 7, MM X 4,5 and 6 and the start of major franchises like Resident Evil, MGS, THPS, Wipeout etc. It also released at a time when arcades were still huge and got a lot of ports of the best games. Arcades like Metal Slug, all the Capcom and Namco fighters, all the shmups etc. It was a pretty big deal when most of those games got home releases. Then there's the Japanese imports and hidden gems. If you write off the PS1 library you just don't know.

Thanks for the Wii U advice. My wife and I decided to pass on it and just buy some more games for the Wii. Picked up a Rock Band kit with Band Hero and Beatles Rock Band from someone locally for $50. Got my son PvZ Garden Warfare 2 on PC, also, he's been dying for that for some time.

Since his birthday AND the holidays are coming up, we've been doing some shopping. One thing I got him (haven't given him any of these things yet) is something called Bloxels, which is almost like a poor man's Mario Maker. It comes with a physical grid and colored cubes you can use to design pixel characters and objects. You then take a picture of them with your phone/tablet and the app turns them into sprites to use in a game. Then, you can actually design your own platformer (including physically creating rooms on the grid if you want). Seems really neat. Bloxels has a site where kids can upload their games to share. My kid really wants to create his own games - he has been designing things in Roblox and has started to learn Python (he'll be 8 in December) - so he'll love this.

I'll look into the Switch when it comes out, but will likely wait on that, too, and see how it pans out.

Also PS1 was fantastic. I still have mine.

Plus Madden, Gameday, NBA Live, every other sports franchise that N64 had almost none of. For retro purposes it doesn't matter, but this is extremely relevant when discussing which system was better to own at the time.

I think I picked up a PSX in 99 when Driver released. Then I got FFVII, FFVIII, and really never looked back to the N64 after that.

I thought Zelda looked very good! The framerate was a bit meh, but it's running on Wii U hardware. In terms of an openworld adventure game, it looks like it might just be one of the best of all time.
