I mean they definitely suffered from the perspective and linear level progression but there was still a bunch of interesting ideas and they were generally fun. They don't rank anywhere near the proper 3D Mario's design but they also had a lot less to work with because of the dumbed down design. The last world in 3D World got kinda hard and was pretty satisfying to finish though.

I like Sunshine a lot but I still rank it behind 64 and SMG1/2. Agree it's the most difficult and the secret platforming areas were the best part.

I've played a bit more SMO, it's a lot like BOTW in it's progression. There's a lot of just running around and doing whatever you want. It's very forgiving on the amount you need to do to progress in the "story". It gets challenging in some areas but it's still been pretty easy so far.

However, he complained multiple times that his joycons are ****ing up during the game. I dunno if that's a switch known issue or not.
Known issue since launch. You can get “replacements” with some sort of tape applied to fix issues of the remote cutting out. Or just buy a pro controller.

Joycons suck. Wish they would release pro versions of them with bigger sticks and a proper dpad.

This happened to my left-joycon too with BoTW; I may have posted about it ITT. I almost sent it to Nintendo, but funny enough, it stopped malfunctioning once I stopped playing for 10-12 hours per day for multiple consecutive days (lol).

Surprised at all of the NSMB criticism, but I get it. Certainly wasn't revolutionary or anything, but it hit all of the NES SMB3-nostalgia-feelings for me (and it seems obvious to me that that's what was intended). Multiplayer was a blast.

Data from Nintendo shows less than 20% of Switch users play their console primarily in docked mode

https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/31/1...rtable-console

Primarily meaning 80% or more of the time that it’s in use.

Do you guys expect a Switch shortage as we get closer to Christmas time? I want to buy myself one when my current semester is over but I'm a bit worried that it may be too late at that point.

Maybe tough if you want a specific bundle, but dunno about generally.

So the new Mario game. Uh, does it get good later? Played the first few levels and the camera was atrocious, worse than N64, and the controls were pretty bad too. How is this getting as high of scores as BotW?

Hey guys, Noodle doesn't like the new, popular game. More news at ten.

There are camera issues AT TIMES, but the controls are fine. Quite good, actually.

The camera is fine, the controls are great but my problem with the game is that the level design is mostly boring as ****. It's fun to run around because Mario controls so well and the levels are visually appealing but nothing about the actual level design or mission structure feels as interesting as previous games. There's really only a one or two interesting sections in each level and most of it feels like it's been done before and better in previous Marios. Controlling the enemies is very fun and they do some cool things with the level design to cater to it but Mario sections are mostly the same old stuff. I'm enjoying my time and it's still a great game overall but after seeing almost everything a level has to offer I'm almost always feeling like "is that it?".

I haven't finished it yet and seen everything but right now I feel I would probably rate this game below 64, Sunshine and both Galaxies.

Galaxy 2 on the other hand is a blast. It feels like the purest 3D version thus far of the 3/World style. Meaning superficially with the design of the world map, but also in the philosophy of each level having a clear linear goal, with sometimes hidden secondary goals. (There is often more than one regular star in a level, but it's not like 64/Sunshine where you have to figure out how to find this particular star; you're put in a different part of the level or led down a different linear path.)

64-esque exploration is still highly limited in the same way as Galaxy 1.

Variety is high. A few levels feel very familiar from Galaxy 1, but it's been long enough since I played that for it not to matter.

Got a Switch yesterday. SMO is awesome.

I do think the levels are a bit too expansive, and I'm prob gonna look up spoilers because I don't want to ground pound every single piece of land in the game, but I'm having a blast so far. Controls are tight, the freedom of movement you have is pretty amazing.

Doing some odyssey and anyone who got all the moons is a complete cheater. Lol at ground pounding the entire game to get them all wtf. Total piss off.

some of the moons are really obscure or just challenging to get. haven't had to look up help yet, but so far i've only got a few more than 500 moons.

one of the most frustrating mini games is the bound-bowl secret course. won on the easy class, but haven't won yet in the more difficult class. seems very random, but maybe i just haven't figured out the right technique.

I just got to the final level (or what I think is the final level)

Spoiler:
Pretty amazed by the reworking of gravity for the Moon Kingdom. Was pretty blown away by how they did that given the tightness of the controls in the overall game.

I agree that some of the moons are pretty obscure, but for the more obscure ones I think you're supposed to use Hint Toad + Talkatoo and you can usually piece it together. I still haven't beaten Bowser and I think I've found like 420-430 moons so far.

I picked up Doom last week. Looks pretty meh but is a blast to play handheld.

Really enjoyed SMO. Thought it was paced really well.

Trying to figure out what games to get.
Daisy likes puzzle games that aren't mechanically inclined.

We have:
Mario Odyssey (which she sucks at, terribly)
Death Squared

Not sure if we need Mario Kart because we have it on Wii U, and do not plan to play it online. We also have Breath of the Wild on Wii U. after reading reviews and seeing gameplay comparisons etc, it's not worth it to spend another $60 on it.

Any thoughts?

How necessary is the pro controller for Zelda and Mario?

Picking up a Switch with those games for xmas and pro controller is on sale on Amazon today...

Unsure on Zelda. For mario, I haven't found a way to do some of the moves without motion controllers, but I also haven't done any searching.

I'm pretty sure the regular joycons are fine.

DID YOU DELETE?!!@qwedaew

Haha yeah I deleted. I misread and thought you were asking about Death Squared so started shilling since I work with the devs but after posting I realized you already owned it.

Nice work buying Death Squared though. Everyone go buy Death Squared!

As for recommendations, have you tried Splatoon or Arms? Arms is super shallow but it can still be a lot of fun if you're playing together. I've been playing Golf Story a lot lately and really enjoy it but it's strictly single player.
