No ****, it's so annoying. People who would "just get a pi" are clearly not the intended market.

Yeah really. I mean why buy a pi when you can just play with emulators on your computer.

Why use a computer when you can break into someone elses house and steal theirs.

Why break into someone else's house when you can imagine that you're breaking into their house?

Re: Nintendo Switch

The people demanding an official English release of Mother 3, and furious that Nintendo took so long with Earthbound VC release, are the exact same people who had already pirated them and did not/will not buy them.

I don't remember older consoles like the NES or the Nintendo 64 being rare, although I wasn't ever getting one as a kid so maybe this has been a thing for their entire existence. I do remember how hard it was to get a Wii that one Christmas - I was lucky enough to snag one during a ten minute window on Amazon for list price when people were paying three to four times that on eBay - but I thought that was just an underestimation of anticipated demand. Eventually Wiis were easy enough to find.
N64 and Tickle Me Elmo were sold out everywhere and all the rage in the autumn of 1996. Even bad N64 games like Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey were in artificial demand and often could be seen on shelves for $80-$100.

I bought a Wii in the summer of 2008 (it had come out close to a year before that) and it was non-trivial to find, had to do the Amazon text message alert thing.

So no, this isn't quite as new as you're suggesting.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Limited availability near launch is different then ending production well before demand is close to satisfied.

From 2013:

The recent Virtual Console release of Super NES game EarthBound is, according to Nintendo, off to a great start. In an announcement from Nintendo of America today, the company said the Wii U game was the third bestselling eShop game on Wii U

So, it seems like if you give people a decent way to give you money, they will give you money.

Well when I was younger I wasn't allowed to get a game system, so I wasn't really sure how long standing a practice this was. My first game console was a GameCube. I was old enough to get a 64 on my own, but I was a broke college student at the time. Anything prior to that I was still living with my parents and they flat out refused to ever get a Nintendo or Sega system. I played some at friends houses of course, but the only time a console entered my house when I was still a kid was when my parents took a family friend up on the offer to let us borrow their NES when my sister broke her leg. You couldn't pry myself or my kid brother off that thing with a crowbar for those two weeks.

It was also the highest selling Wii U game in Europe when it released. GOG and Steam etc proved people will buy things when it's easy, convenient and official.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Nice to see the angry keyboard warriors in moms basement start to show their faces. If it really annoys you or bugs you when someone mentions pi, then maybe a little self evaluation is in order. I was only mentioning it because of the cool 8bitdo snes wireless controller I found.

Not angry at all, just an observation and was responding to the "annoyed posts". Like I said the controller I thought was cool so I brought it up no harm no foul.

Re: Nintendo Switch

The controller is cool and also works on the Switch in case you didn't know. The annoyed posts come from when the NES mini came out people couldn't stop comparing it to the pi and it got really old really fast.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Thought about it, but it's $60 and there's a $20 season pass that adds <unspecified> and I'm not sure I wanna drop $80 for four worlds of Mario strategy plus Ubisoft micro transactions.
