My Wii U would get way less play if I couldn't use the gamepad to play offscreen. Would have much rather had a more powerful system for the same amount and bought the gamepad separately though. Think the best way to do it is probably debut with a well equipped system and then have the gamepad offscreen functionality be included in their next handheld.

Having it as an optional accessory gadget would have been fine.

Attempting to design the whole console around it, that was no bueno. Bundling one with every system probably increased the cost of the setup by $100, which is a big deal for a lot of casual buyers (Nintendo's main market these days).

And the whole idea just put off certain buyers (like me) and some game devs.

The fact Nintendo barely did anything with it in any of their games was proof enough they came to their senses that people didn't have all that much interest in it, yet they still insisted on having bizarre rules for it (it's a mandatory pack in, you can't have more than 1, you can't buy them separate, etc.)

This might sound crazy but I think its got Sony and MS on their toes. After all this NX talk, the PS4k and XBone1.5 rumours start flooding in.

Makes me think if this is their effort to be on par with Nin.

Development probably started on all 3 within a few months of each other. You don't design these things in a couple of weeks.

And a bigger LOL at thinking Nintendo is better than the other 2.

Why? PS4 is nearing 3 years. If it wasn't more powerful I'd be more shocked.

Yeah I'd expect Nintendo to always be a half-generation ahead or behind for the foreseeable future

Manufacturing a console that is comparable/ahead of a PS4 must be essential if Nintendo want to get the third party support the Wii U lacked.

They struggled with decent third party games on wii and that sold incredible numbers. I would've liked to get another Nintendo console cause I love mario, mario kart, but there just weren't enough games on the wii worth buying. It really was absurd.

As a younger gamer I'd cringe seeing Another ****ty luigi game. but ps4 graphics + mindless ghost hunting seems about right for me now :P

Maybe I'm being dense but I think many folks (myself included) play a lot of puzzle games (e.g. Tetris, Minesweeper) on mindless auto-pilot

I haven't followed Nintendo lately, was the Wii U that much of a disaster that they're trying to bring out a new console like 4 years later?

It wasn't a disaster but it definitely didn't have a great run. It had boosts with MK8, Smash, Splatoon and Mario Marker but nothing else really seemed to move consoles too much. It did have a lot of great stuff outside those games though.

They'll never be able to get third party support for it and it's too far behind power wise so it's time for a new console.

Only reason I bought a Wii U was for Mario Maker (to play levels, not to make them) and it was worth it. MK8 is worthwhile too.

That's been around for awhile and discussed in the Wii U thread. Makes sense imo and the pros far out way the cons. It's not 96 anymore. It will basically be SD cards.
