For those who would want backwards compatibility for the original Wii (me), I would think that just buying a used Wii would be as cost effective or better than whatever an add-on would cost. The two downsides are a) eventually the Wii will die, and b) older connections.

I actually just got a new TV for our play room that doesn't have component connections, so I have a Wii HDMI adapter arriving today. We'll see how it works.

Really, it would be cool as hell if the console makers released some sort of PC app that would allow us to create digital copies of our old games for use on the new system. You obviously start getting into significant DRM/pirating issues, but it would still be fantastic.

I saw this article today for pre order

http://bgr.com/2017/01/17/nintendo-s...mart-in-store/

For all the criticism it's gotten, at least for Nintendo people are talking about it extensively.

The Wii U had absolutely no buzz or interest or hype or anything, it came out without anyone really noticing or caring.

The Switch has gotten a ton of press and attention and the general public is much more aware of it, and that alone will make it way more successful than the Wii U IMO.

I was able to get my pre order from Walmart by stopping in the store even though the website shows it is out so it was definitely worth looking into. Now I just need to sell my wii bundle and 3ds xl limited Zelda bundle to offset this cost lol. Let me know if there is anyone interested here before I post it on ebay.

I think the only "need items" left for me is of course Zelda, and then a stand for when I play it at lunch here at work which was only $13 and then a case and maybe screen protector which I doubt I would need.

It certainly looks like it could be a really fun system. I just worry (and this is coming from someone whose most recent console is the original Wii) that there won't be enough games. I also hate that every single Switch item costs so much (and the online stuff will cost money). I built a very nice budget gaming PC for less money than the Switch, one game, and an extra controller.

I was considering making this my first modern console purchase, but I'll probably wait at least a year.

The public might be talking about it now but that won't last long a couple months after release. The launch line up is weaker than Wii U's and so is third party support. If you're worried about a lack of games then don't even bother with a Switch. Zelda looks awesome but what else is there apart from Wii U ports until Mario comes out? I have other consoles so it doesn't really bother me but even the lack of new Nintnedo software is disappointing.

They've managed to completely crush all my excitement and I usually love almost everything they do. Zelda runs at 900p on the Switch. If they can't get a Wii U port to run at 1080p then it's pretty worrying. It's yet another under powered console full of gimmicks most games won't event use. Paying for online, more pushing motion control and ridiculous prices of accessories is just icing.

No support for streaming services such as Netflix? Wtf Nintendo. You are making this decision pretty easy for me

I have 1000 devices that already do this. Thank you Nintendo for stripping this out.

My wii u is the only device hooked up to the "playroom" TV where my son uses the TV. It's used more for streaming than games half the time. Being stripped out may work for you but being able to Stream from consoles has become commonplace even with previous gen Nintendo hardware. It's a huge turn off for me.

If no one plays your Wii U, who would be playing your Switch?

I said it's used more for streaming than games, try reading maybe? I never said it's not played. My son and I will both play it just like the wii u. However I have no desire to buy yet another box to stream with when every other console does it right along side the games

I don't know why this is such a common complaint. If you want COD get a PS4/xbox1. If you want mario and zelda awesomeness get a nintendo. Those games don't need much power.

Zelda runs at 720p on Wii U and runs at 900p on Switch with better lighting and draw distance but Tuma's friend said it's less powerful so I'll take his word.

This makes no sense, there is no disadvantage to having a feature even if you don't plan on using it but a big downside the other way.

If it doesn't fit what you want, just don't buy it

We've never had a portable handheld console that is as powerful as a Wii U, that may be enough for many as a DS replacement

Streaming wasn't a priority for them and you can get a $20 usb stick for your tv to do streaming or just keep the Wii u for that

Or just get a different console

I thought the Switch might be the console that brought Nintendo back into peoples living rooms but this reveal has me worried.

Significantly less powerful then the competition.
Right there anyone whose only buying one console isn't buying the Switch.

Requires an online subscription.
Nintendo's online services haven't been good so far, I don't believe they're going to suddenly leap ahead and anybody thinking about a second console is going to be put off by another subscription.

Games need to be programmed to run in both docked and portable modes.
The ease of programming for its PC like architecture is undermined if you have to have two modes.

A $300 launch price.
An acceptable price for a home system but a little bit high for a portable. Its priced directly in line with the more powerful competition and is $50 more then the 3DS was at launch, a system that had to slash its price four months after release before sales started to take off.

Battery life that speculated to be in the three hour region when running triple A titles.
3 hours is kind of ****ty and makes me wonder how much battery life is eaten up by the haptic feedback and other nonsense.

I suspect its going to sell better then the WiiU because its going to be the replacement for the 3ds for a lot of people, but as a $300 handheld that requires another $100 a year subscription i don't see it selling as well as the 3ds.
