It worked for the DS/3DS cuz you can see both screens at once really.
When using a tv it's just a gigantic nuisance.
It has potential, particularly for like IRL multi-player gaming that should be Nintendo's bread and butter (e.g., you and actual people play games in a room together).
Mario Chase, Luigi's Ghost Mansion and that Pikmin Adventure games within Nintendo Land showcased/demo'd the potential; e.g., chase games like Mario Chase where one player has the GamePad and can see the entire arena/all the players versus the opponents without the GamePad who only had limited views on the TV. Or Pikmin Adventure where one leader is commanding units with the GamePad and the other players in the room are the units/resources doing the tasks or work or battles.
Could have been sports games (e.g., GamePad is like a first-person goalie view in hockey, or first-person QB view) while the other players in the room get a standard EA Madden/NHL presentation of the game or whatever that used this gimmick.
Or puzzle games where the GamePad player was offered more information on their display versus TV players who were offered less. Picture Tetris where 3 player are playing: 2 players on the TV versus one player with the GamePad, who is controlling the tile sequences and can troll the players with surprising or bad tile sequences or whatever. Or point and click adventure games where the GamePad player gets more info or can interact with the scene and the TV player has to deduce the clues or whatever that only the GamePad player can see.
All that kind of stuff.
Unfortunately no one, not even Nintendo actually developed any games that meaningfully used this sort of design but the potential was there to make fun party/multi-player games.
