With E3 just a couple of months off, and with a ton of new rumors about this console out right now, seems like a good time to kick off discussion about this thing.

I am really hoping Nintendo comes along and makes this thing really powerful, but we all know that won't happen. And it would be nice if they launched it with a new Zelda, which may happen? And PLZ don't come out with a gimmick controller... Oh wait already happened.

Random rumor from IGN, this thing will do 900p 60fps.... Plz to be false.

The controller is making me question myself if I should purchase thing thing, no joke.

I was waiting to buy a Wii-U solely for the Zelda title. As with Twilight Princess for the GC+Wii, it'd be cool if Zelda is released for both NX and Wii-U (so I won't have to buy a Wii-U).

I always try to stay optimistic when it comes to Nintendo but those pics are making it really hard.

Seems like I, and everyone else on the planet, was just really hoping Nintendo would make a normal game system, with a normal controller, with finally the horsepower to support third party triple A titles.

If that leak is legit and that is indeed the main interface device, it's pretty safe to say Nintendo has abandoned ever legitimately competing in the gaming console market ever again and is doubling down on their strategy of instead making whacky gadgets and gizmos and mobile games and toys.

That's a huge relief.

I would say hopefully Nintendo saw the massive negative reaction but at this point I guess it's probably too late for them to change their NX plans, whatever they are.

I just hope it has nothing to do with mobile **** or them trying to "innovate" some brand new concept nobody is asking for or wants.

I doubt Nintendo goes back towards making something closer to an Xbox or PS4; seems like they are firmly in their own lane in terms of consoles. That said, I am hoping they release something I will actually want to play with my as-yet unborn kids.

Yeah, who would want a pointless powerful gaming console that delivers beautiful graphics and smooth game play. I'm hoping the new Nintendo is more like Pong FTW.

Nintendo doesn't need the most powerful machine, just a machine powerful enough so that the triple A developers can throw their Call of Duty 152 on it if the want to easily.

Almost all major titles are cross platform anyway (PC, PS, XB, etc.) it's not like they exclude Nintendo just to be dicks. If Nintendo builds a console that allows them to easily port their game too, they will, from their point of view it's just another market for more sales.

The rumours I heard from Pat the NES Punk are of some kind of hybrid handheld home system about as powerful as an xbox one or ps4.

Yeah I saw that. A lot of those rumors have been around for a while.

Side note - Pat the NES Punk is awesome.

Isn't the rumor/criticism that Nintendo consciously screws over and/or ignores third-party devs to pump up the sale of their first party games?

Super glib retelling of the story here, but basically, Nintendo doesn't want or more correctly does not care if you want to play Call of Duty 152 since they don't make that much money licensing dev kits or selling consoles. They make it selling you Mario over and over. Third parties are little more than a distraction from their franchise delivery ecosystems.

Not trying to start a console war here because I spend 75% of my gaming time on Nintendo machines. But the notion that the third-parties are "dicks" to Nintendo or wouldn't want to easily port their games to Nintendo machines gets it backwards imo. Which I think you more or less said.

But remember, what is more likely is that Nintendo consciously builds byzantine machines/tools and creates the ecosystem with a lack of financial reward for porting games to Nintendo consoles so that third-parties essentially go away and leave the shelf-space free for Mario, Zelda and MarioZelda Party Baseball Smash Kart Tennis 35.

Assuming Nintendo doesn't up-end their business strategy that has been in place for like 30 years or so now, I wouldn't hold out hope Nintendo NX is suddenly going to be developed with the mindset that they want to be friendly to third-party devs. Not Nintendo's MO.

Just read an article on Forbes, quoting a poster on Reddit, that said the NX is more powerful than the PS4, and has a controller with a screen on it.

I thought the controller with a screen was common knowledge. I remember reading about it in an article from 1 of the "cons" or something like E3. I don't remember which one it was.

I'll be surprised if it's more powerful than the PS4.

As usual it will have major success in Asia and mediocre success in the rest of the world.

It's worth spending $400 on just to play the new Zelda.

I will buy almost no matter what.

The reason a controller with a screen is useless is because when you're playing on an actual tv, you wanna look at the TV, the big screen, where all the action is happening. You don't wanna be periodically (or even worse constantly) looking down at this screen.

It worked for the DS/3DS cuz you can see both screens at once really.

When using a tv it's just a gigantic nuisance.

It has potential, particularly for like IRL multi-player gaming that should be Nintendo's bread and butter (e.g., you and actual people play games in a room together).

Mario Chase, Luigi's Ghost Mansion and that Pikmin Adventure games within Nintendo Land showcased/demo'd the potential; e.g., chase games like Mario Chase where one player has the GamePad and can see the entire arena/all the players versus the opponents without the GamePad who only had limited views on the TV. Or Pikmin Adventure where one leader is commanding units with the GamePad and the other players in the room are the units/resources doing the tasks or work or battles.

Could have been sports games (e.g., GamePad is like a first-person goalie view in hockey, or first-person QB view) while the other players in the room get a standard EA Madden/NHL presentation of the game or whatever that used this gimmick.

Or puzzle games where the GamePad player was offered more information on their display versus TV players who were offered less. Picture Tetris where 3 player are playing: 2 players on the TV versus one player with the GamePad, who is controlling the tile sequences and can troll the players with surprising or bad tile sequences or whatever. Or point and click adventure games where the GamePad player gets more info or can interact with the scene and the TV player has to deduce the clues or whatever that only the GamePad player can see.

All that kind of stuff.

Unfortunately no one, not even Nintendo actually developed any games that meaningfully used this sort of design but the potential was there to make fun party/multi-player games.
