I'll answer myself, the joycons are fairly uncomfortable to use. In handheld mode they're uncomfortable and the d-pad is unusable compared to something like a PS Vita.Separated and docked to that little handheld adapter is better, but still not comfortable. I immediately looked for replacement controllers and found the official Switch Pro Controller which IMO is mandatory. It feels like a better XBox 360 controller.

Also, if you're a PC guy like me (this is my first Nintendo since the SNES) be prepared for sticker shock on the game prices. Even indie games that have been out for years on PC go for $25+, and all the big games are eternally $60+.

I never saw anyone mention how heavy the thing is in handheld mode, it's not usable for longer periods of time unless you have something to rest it on, holding it in bed like a phone or Vita is not going to work for very long. That said it's pretty cool when you can rest it on a pillow or something and be playing pretty sophisticated games.

Agree with your joycon assessment. Basically unusable.

Pro controller is awesome.

Handheld is fine too. I don't mind playing with it for a long time but for I prefer the pro controller. Sometimes I put the gamepad on my lap or my table tilted up and play with controller.

I play handheld in bed and it works fine for me. That's an hour or so maybe of playing which doesn't bother me much.

Switch Lite announced for 199. Bit of a smaller form factor, slightly smaller screen, joycons can't be removed and not dockable for TV, otherwise promises same performance and "slightly improved" battery life.

What do you mean not dockable for TV? You can only play it handheld?

Yup. Switch Lite is a handheld-only Switch. So it's a Switch that doesn't Switch.

Given that the 2DS was the 3DS without 3D, this seems to be their MO.

Pokemon will be the system seller for Switch Lite. Kids will "need" their own Switch.

The unswitchable Switch is quite a disappointment for me. I'd have preferred the other way around - a cheap model without a display that just uses the pro controller and runs docked mode all the time, if they were open to making a version without the namesake features. Hopefully the rumors are true and there's a "Switch Pro" out sometime next year also.

^ that's the future of video games anyway. Just stream them. No console. Get a controller and play.

Those rumors have literally existed since launch day. We're like 2 years into this console cycle and Nintendo has said on record they want the Switch to last ~10 years.

If you're waiting for a "pro" version, you're going to be waiting for a long time.

I believe this was the first credible rumor, nothing on launch day from any kind of reputable source.

Does the "Pro" controller ever go on sale? Now that I'm into Smash I should probably get a good remote.

Also, does anyone else here play Smash? Me and my daughter are super into it right now so much fun. I love playing as Lucina, ROB and Link.

That's my point, you won't find any confirmations from a reputable source because it isn't happening any time soon.

The WSJ is a very reputable source. They specifically say Nintendo are making two new switches, an "enhanced" one for "avid videogamers" (e.g. a "pro") and a cheap one with some functions removed, in particular the rumble. Seems pretty credible to me. If you don't think so, fair enough.

Yeah, I'm entirely unconvinced by their sources of "people familiar with the matter" and "parts suppliers and software developers for Nintendo." The latter, if legit, could simply be referencing the new devkit they've been talking about.

Seriously, there's almost nothing of substance in this article. Everything is "one person said," or "generally, console makers do this." They're comparing the release cycle to Sony and Microsoft, completely disregarding how Nintendo hardly ever follows the norm. Any "evidence" for a supposed pro model could easily be the stealth hardware update that has been talked about and aforementioned devkit model.

It really reads as someone out of touch with the industry.

When Mariokart was released (2017) I bought 2 of the knock-off brand "pro" controllers from Walmart ($22 each IIRC). They still work great for me.

My dumb Switch question of the day.

If I want to get the lite, would I be able to transfer the games, play them, AND sell my old switch to recoup $$ or will I have to keep the old switch since it has my user name tagged to it? I never play in dock mode and could care less about the rumble, so this actually intrigues me. I solely play it at work before i start/lunchtime or on a plane.

Not even bothering to check my Switch but I'm like 99.99% sure you could wipe your account off the main one and sell it, and just sync your account on the Lite and play all your games on there.

Switch "pro" announced . New chip from Nvidia brings massive improvements to battery life, otherwise no changes listed. Top end 9! hours, 5.5 "Zelda hours". Possibly some unspoken/minimal performance improvements, time will tell.

New packaging is much more red, if you are looking for one (not out for a month at least)

Might have to wait for the new version until I get mine. Sucks, since I really want to play Fire Emblem, but I also really don't want to buy a product that is strictly worse than a version released soon.

Yeah I'd feel bad if I had just bought one. I rarely am playing for long enough to drain one off of a full charge though. Only concern would be on a long flight without an AC outlet or something.

lol @ "massive improvement"

Just a more efficient chipset, as expected. Though, I am surprised they're marketing it as a different model, and not just stealth updating the original.

Edit: Nevermind, it *is* being phased in as the "actual" Switch model. They just aren't being very stealthy about it.

Link's Awakening out today.

I'll get it when I'm next out near a brick and mortar.
