finished the main mario odyssey story last night. total play time was between 5 and 6 hours. o.O

I guess I'm not super interested in grinding coins to get the 10k coin skeleton outfit, but is there anything I'm missing from this game? Curious why people thought this game was anywhere near as great as BotW?

Only memorable moments for me were the scooter/dino chase/escape, getting screwed at the last second during that seal/polar bear/whatever rolling race, and the complete wtf that was the end of the game

How many moons did you finish with?

Once you get 250(?) you unlock a new world/kingdom.

Agree that not all of the unlockables are worth going after (I don’t think I put in more than ~10 hours after beating the final boss) but exploring each of the old kingdoms with the post-game silver pipes was very fun and felt Metroid-Vania-ish.

I thought a lot of the Odyssey as “runner up to BOTW” awards were Switch-specific but I could be remembering things incorrectly. Most of the “best of 2017” lists I remember had Persona 5 as the #2.

SMO is doing this new thing Nintendo games do where you "beat" the game by completing roughly 25-50% of the content. I actually don't think it's that bad of a design choice. Gives everyone some sense of satisfaction. If you're happy just doing the story then cool but there's much more to do after that if you want to.

At 250 moons you unlock a new area, at 500 moons you unlock the real last area. Most moons are fun but towards the end it can get a bit tedious looking for them at times. The last area is great though and pretty challenging.

I thought it was fun but I didn't enjoy it any where near as much as Galaxy 1 and 2. The platforming is always great though, no 3D platformer has ever come close to Mario imo.

when i got to peach’s kingdom there was no interest left to go after the harder moons. def laughed at the power stars.

I’ve been doing Master Mode on BOTW. Only have like 10 shrines left and 2 x Divine Beasts to go. I think the only real thing I’m dreading is Trial of the Sword this time. In regular mode you could be super deliberate (you had to be) and could grind away enemies with bombs. Enemies healing pretty much nixes the conservative strategy I used to (barely) complete Trial of the Sword the first time—this included all kinds of desperation moves like cooking meals out of wood to get the quarter heart.

I got really burnt out on BOTW after finishing all of the Divine Beasts and while preparing for Ganon.. I think it was all the guardians I got my ass kicked by when approaching the castle. This makes me feel bad because at one point I was absolutely captivated by the awesomeness of the game. Next game is SMO.

once you get master sword + upgraded guardian armor, the castle is like a terribly fun playground

Ancient arrows are your friend, especially for the flying Guardians (Stasis + Ancient Bow) make this much easier.

Agree. Plus lots of Koroks to find there as well.

I typically relied on the Urbosa power to slay the Guardians (at least the nonstationary ones with 6 legs; obviously the ones that can’t move are a bit easier). Lol, lots of ways to curbstomp Hyrule Castle if you’ve powered up yourself elsewhere.

This game’s version of Hyrule Castle is quite possibly the best + most fun dungeon in the entire LoZ series.

any kind of arrow to the eye is good for a stun, or just cut its damn legs off. I love cutting the legs off. :sadistic:

I’m thinking about finally getting a Switch. Is there enough stuff on here that doesn’t require a super-fast internet connection? I’ve got satelite internet and I don’t think it can do online multi-player well.

Sorry for the noob question. I haven’t really played games regularly for awhile. I can’t remember the last time played my 360. Probably when Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out and I played that with my kids. I miss gaming.

It depends on what you're wanting.

The games that require decent internet are: Splatoon, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis.

I'm sure NBA 2k needs it. I think most of everything else is fine as offline/single player.

Yes, there is definitely enough on Switch that doesn't require a super-fast connection. I've got a ton of use out of my system and have never played any online multiplayer. BOTW and SMO alone will keep a casual gamer busy for a longgg time.

Yeah, I used to play a lot of CoD, Mass Effect, and the like on my 360. Then my girls grew up enough to wonder what all the killing was about. So, that along with a new job that required a bit more time caused me to drift away from playing much at all, other than some Minecraft and the Lego Star Wars series with the girls (10 and 7 now). I’d really like to get a new system that we can all do some playing on, and Switch seems like the best bet. Does that make sense?

Switch did just get the better together version of Minecraft.

There’s something for everyone on it and most consoles tbh. The only possible problem would be in how you intend to get games. Downloading them may take a way if there’s not a great local option for ourchase, but again, true for the other platforms as well.

bowens, I think the Switch is the perfect console for you and your family. You won't regret it.

One thing to be careful of with the Switch is sometimes games do require a hefty download in addition to the cart. So if you're on Satellite internet with a very low bandwidth cap, this could be a problem. It's not all games by any means, NBA 2K18 is an example of one that does need it. Worth a check before picking up any particular cart. Usually there's a huge unsightly warning on the box cover.

Alright, just bought a Switch

Teach me how to Nintendo

/Grunch

Obv will get BotW and SMO. What else? I've played Kart and not really that interested, probably will buy SMP and Smash when they come out

What about Indies? Will get Overcooked because it's awesome. I hear Golf Story is good as well?

Didn't know what a jrpg was til several months ago but played Battle Chasers and now Octopath and they're both great.

For indies I would recommend golf story and shovel knight. Haven't played Celeste or Hollow Knight yet but have heard good things.

Bayonetta 2 is another Nintendo exclusive that is very solid if you're into that genre at all.

As far as indies, Celeste is amazing and Hollow Knight is great. Both probably tend to lean a bit more on the difficult side in case that's a problem for you. You will die. On that same note, Binding of Isaac GOAT.

I also really enjoyed Golf Story, but I can def see its appeal being limited to a lot of people, so just know what you're getting into before buying. The golf aspect is very simplistic and perhaps not as prevalent as you might think.

Mario Rabbids is a surprisingly fun strategy game. Plays sort of like a puzzle RPG.

4 player just dance with the joycons, no more AA batteries. Mario kart 8 deluxe battle mode. Haven't picked up tennis aces yet but that is on the list. 2 player sniper clips is good. Monopoly is OK but kind of saps the fun of physically playing, on the plus side the baby can't destroy the game. Mario party out this year that is a definite. Arms is great for both casual and serious, my kids got quite a bit out of that together. Oh and hyruke warriors, my kids still play the wii u version 2player, that is being ported to switch.
Overall, not a bad family couch line up. Seriously needs some wii/u party/sports type games though. Do kind of feel like the only real benefit of switch is portability, ie can play games in bed etc, but could also do that with game pad so meh.
