Also, I really have no idea why the "official Mojang-guys" bother still developing this? (well, not counting the "it's their job and their making tons of money off it"-aspect...)

They're decades behind the mods and I don't understand why anyone would play vanilla-MC - mainly the most noticeable thing they're doing these days is screwing up mods when they change stuff for new releases.

Start a simple cow farm and any issue with hunger (or leather) is gone...

BTW, I play vanilla MC...

What cool mod features am I missing?

Check out Feed The Beast which makes it easy to play various mod-packs.

Can't really mention specific mod features as it just turns into a whole different game and experience with mod-packs. Portal-guns, laser-guns, night-vision, jet-packs, solar power, nuclear power, electronics, machinery, bee-farming, automated production, automated mining/resource farming and obviously a ton of new items, monsters, animals, biomes, ores, metals, improvements to maps, inventory-management, crafting etc - this is probably the game that benefits most from modding in gaming-history.

Wow, thanks for the post! I'll look into the above. Awesome.

Hey mark,I know your kid likes to play. My son and I watched the sgdq minecraft speedrun (all acheivements) and it was a lot of fun. Just search Damage Boost on youtube and check out his channel. He is hosting all the sgdq videos

So I downloaded it and the default Infinity pack loads 165 mods and just kills my Mac, that seems like a lot...

Thanks Master! My daughter is really into watching Minecraft videos. I'll pass this to her.

People say the write mods in lua, but it seems like the game was written in Java, no? How does that all work?

Why would you want to though? Food is just an issue the first few hours (and not much of one then either) - you can set up a farm and/or kill some cows/pigs. It's not much of a bother at all.
You can play on peaceful until you have a steady supply of food going too.

Mods are written in java afaik - lua is just used as a scripting language for some of the computer related mods. That is - you program the stuff in-game with lua (or at least a language with similar syntax), but the mod you're doing it in is still made with java.

For instance you can make 'turtles' which are basically robots in MC - you program them (while playing MC) with lua to do what you want them to do. 'dig down, turn right' etc.

Oh, cheers. Makes sense.

I can barely stand hunger in Don't Starve, which basically indicates a hunger mechanism right in the title.

My ideal world would have two minutes of night and no hunger. Leave more of my time for the fun parts of the game.

Got xbone version so Giz could play coop. Finally found some obsidian, hadn't found any crystal tho.

Killed endless waves of spiders and their spawn boxes.

Not sure how people remember where these caves go. Things are so deep and complex.

Signs are nice although a bit of a pita if you don't have a keyboard on the Xbox.

Try to get to the nether realm, or void zone, or whatever it's called

My kids play a lot of Minecraft, and to my dismay, they are sucked into the whole strange world of pay2win servers with special PvP modes where players are encouraged to spend real money to get more powerful gear, or random loot crate keys, or better tiers that give better kits, etc. I've been preaching very hard against exploitative monetization games, and I need to find some alternate servers that I can guide my kids towards that will have the features they've come to enjoy, but not have them coming back to me begging for a god mode pick axe or whatever. Monetization through donations or for cosmetic items are ethically fine in my book, but I don't want my kids supporting shady business models.

Suggestions for legitimate kid-friendly servers?

Get your own server for 10 bucks a month and set it up as you like.

That idea has been floated, and I can see the allure, but I suspect the novelty would wear off quickly, since presumably the population/traffic wouldn't be heavy enough to support the kind of interaction they would get at a public server. Based on what I've seen of their playing, they seem to like PvP/"factions" (not sure if that's two different things, or one is implied by the other), and spend a lot of time trying to do trading, although I can't speak to what specific mods or whatever they prefer.

If $10/month for a private server is okay why not just put them on a $10/month spending limit on the server they're already playing and enjoying?

I was playing with the new 0.12.1 Minecraft Pocket Edition for Android. The newly added nether seems busted to me. The blaze spawners are empty. Chests in the fortresses are invisible. Ghasts aren't to be found.

The nether is to be a fairly peaceful place. Sigh.

I picked up Rising World after having had it on my wishlist for ages.

I try to avoid early access games, but this one has gotten fairly regular updates for as long as I've followed it and looked like it's already worth the price.

After 2-3 hours play I'm really impressed and enjoying it a lot. It's Minecrafty, but with some big differences - the world is not blocky but more 'real' (though you can craft blocks to build with), the graphics are much better and there is a ton of stuff to craft. You have a huge amount of materials to build with, all the blocks can be made in different shapes and there's planks and all matter of other stuff to build with too. You can turn stuff before placing which makes building a lot more flexible.

There's a lot of furniture and stuff too which works and is not just decorative.

Crafting is done by just having what you need and picking what to make from a list - you don't have to know recipes. (Some of the recipes in the game aren't done yet and doesn't have any requirements so you can just make them without having any ingredients.)

So, anyone who enjoyed minecrafts early days of alpha and/or beta is probably gonna love this too, even in EA.

There doesn't seem to be any monsters (yet?) - there are a lot of different animals and the ones who'd attack you irl will attack you here too (bears), but they're fairly easy to avoid. Food/water is needed, but apples, tomatoes and stuff is plentiful so that's no problem.

It's 15% off for the next day or so and imo huge value for money already.
