Guys,

I just got into Minecraft a couple of days ago, and I'm having some problems. The bottom of my screen looks like this:

In other words, the icons for the blocks I mine aren't showing up, so I have no real idea what I have. Is this related to the recent DDoS attack, or could it be on my end?

Apologies if this has been answered before; I'm grunching.

I would be all excited thinking I found some secret block.

All right, figured it out. Turns out it was indeed a driver issue.

holy tree planet? Is that natural or did you plant all of those lol? I've yet to see anything like that occur naturally...

Friday evening I got lost underground and spent about 4 hours trying to find my way back to the surface. I have placed so many torches that I actually lost my original trail. On the plus side I had plenty of wood with me to build picks and etc. So I found a bunch of diamonds and got a ton of steel ore. I eventually gave up and tunneled my way back to the surface which took an extraordinary amount of time since I managed to surface my way through a large ass mountain. Now I just need to find my original spawn point...

One tip if you want to climb far down and find minerals is to just dig straight down/vertical till u either hit admin blocks or lava, then dig around that area 6x or w/e, then when u want back up, u just jump up, aim down and fill the spot with dirt till u get up.

They are called bed rock, and someone said that it's possible to fall off the map where no bed rock exists. Also, if you're going to go straight down, make sure you don't bring much in your inventory because as soon as you hit lava you won't be able to get out and you will lose everything.

The other day I built a huge mine shaft all the way down to bed rock and then went around and found my first patch of diamond, only 4 blocks. Dug around some more, but couldnt' find anymore. Found a heck of a ton of the red stuff, found some gold, and found some iron. Ran into lava, which I was able to patch the hole so it didn't fill in.

I'm surprised I didn't find anymore diamond though. They must be pretty rare. Any tips on finding more? Just keeping digging down around bed rock?

I wouldn't advise digging straight down (in a 1x1 space) just for the simple reason you might hit an empty cavern and fall to your death, etc.

Diamond does seem to be pretty sparse but I have found it in so many random locations not all of which were down in the bed rock. I would find some natural caverns and explore those. I find quite a bit doing that.

My advice is to dig down, and when you're close to the bottom just dig in one direction. Eventually you'll find a cave and just go from there. I've got ~40 diamonds saved up and that's just from the area around my spawn point. I do have a massive cave though so that helps, found about 6 dungeons too. Pretty sure I got lucky with my spawn.

I made a staircase mine in my latest game and ran into some diamond before I had any iron. So I used my stone pick to dig 3 blocks of diamond to make a diamond pick...

*facepalm*

Didn't even realize that I didn't get any diamonds until I was finished with the 3 blocks.

There's a video about efficient mining on youtube. Basically you go down to the bottom then make a long hallway, then dig crosshallways on that big hallway every 5-6 blocks or so. That way you end up with a huge grid of hallways that expose a lot of the rocks and since minerals tend to cluster it's very unlikely that any will be hidden in the 3 or 4 block wide walls between your hallways.

There's also a tool that you can use to load up your map and expose all terrain features. You could use that to find big concentrations of diamonds and use the method above on that area.

Btw, all of this is pretty much why I'm done with the game for the now. Once you've ran out of ideas on what to create it just becomes way to much grind without much reward. Just slightly better tools and armor. Not like there are any epic monsters to fight with that diamond sword and armor.

That's my problem with it.. It's cool that the map is unreal huge, but it's all the same everywhere you go so why bother getting killed a long ways from your spawn point when everything you could find on an adventure you could get just by digging straight down at your spawn..

Still love the game though

Yea some changes need to be made. There's no benefit to exploring far away from your spawn because if you die you're ****ed. Just waitin for the Halloween update at this point. And Wolf I did the same exact thing when I found my first diamonds

IF you want to play a game with some kind of armor reward or w/E, then go play wow. This isnt ment to be a grind game of that sort, its supposed to be a sandbox game where u decide what u want to do, if u want to make a castle and a city, then go do that. Your imagination is your limit, and if your imagination only stretches to getting a certain armor then this game isnt for you.

This was natural. In fact, I got up there to get that view by tunneling up through a huge tree on top of a mountain.

The bad news: I got lost and had no way to get back to my cave-mansion.

This. I think fighting off the mobs is a very, very incidental part of the game.

The main page pretty much says it all:

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks while running from skeletons. Or something like that..
Here, watch this video of me testing rollercoasters in the game instead:

Anyone have any multiplayer servers that they'd recommend? Looking for ones that don't offer up piles and piles of diamonds when you first log on (although some of things I've seen on the server in this thread are brilliantly built).

I just read this whole thread and watched about an hour of Youtube videos. Glad it isn't free because it would most likely consume the majority of my day.

Argh. Been mining close to my spawn in a new game world and have found tons of obsidian but can't do anything with it as I've yet to find a single diamond so far.

lol, defensive much.

I played the game 10 hours a day for a week builing castles, huge monuments that stretch to the top of the sky, a redstone binary clock, monster traps, stripmines, explored huge caverns, found a mob generator etc etc.

But it gets old and the grind gets to you. That was my point. I started a new game and started building a new base but after about an hour I was like... what's the point. I've done it all before.

The game needs more variety to the adventure/survival part of it. For instance redstone needs to have more uses.
