A cube is where you build a "set" out of one-of powerful cards, from all different sets. From this set, you draft (or play sealed I guess), and you have constucted level power in a limited format. Basically, its something that people do to reminisce over some of the awesome old cards they have. It's also a lot of fun, and cheaper than paying for a draft (if you already have the cards).
drafting takes a while too, I've played where you make the cube into 6 decks and roll dice to see what you draw from, and play without playing its mana cost which can be fun, albeit low skillbased

Any NY Area players on here? Is there any other way to find Tournaments outside of Wizards website? I can't seem to find any Legacy or Extended action anywhere on Long Island at all. Nothing but Standard and Draft.

Magic is fun, last time I played was about 12 years ago, unfortunately all the cards got destroyed

Yet another 10E sealed pool. This one seems just awful to me. Not sure wtf I was supposed to do. Put together U/G with a decent number of fliers and hoping to steal a few that way. But I think this deck sucks.

Going to be Booster Drafting M2010 this week, any general tips for anyone who hasn't drafted since Urza's Saga?

So, white is nutterbusted. Green and black both have really solid common runs. Red's commons minus lightning bolt are awful, but its uncommons are godly.

Blue overall needs a support color, but can be decent.

IMO, B/W has been the best archetype to draft, since a lot of players clusterfack for green, especially when they draft fireball and need a way to splash it in somewhere.

Try to draft mono-colored. In order of common/uncommon runs I'd go:

White
Black
Green
Red
Blue

Howl of the night pack for green is really hard to beat. Don't pass earthquake, fireball. It's okay to pass lightning bolt. Serra angel is really good and doesn't die to alot of cards.

If you see fireball and serra angel in your first pack, take the fireball.

imo only black is great mono-colored

white gains a lot from access to blue/red/black

green can splash the easiest and usually you can get a better 21-24th card in another color than green

black has tendrils and consume spirit which become bonkers when you are mono-black(and they stick around longer than howl/ascension), far more so than armored ascension or howl of the night pack

mono-red/blue seems like a good way to go 0-3

Howl of the night pack is a game-ender unless they have the earthquake/pyroclasm.

sure, but its uncommon, which means in the 24packs there is roughly 1.2 of them and its no lock to get to you

I mean if you open it you likely want to be heavy green, but without it mono-green seems awful

basically I could see going mono-black, going mono anything else would take really fluky circumstances like getting 3 howls or something

Green is difficult for a lot of people to deal with, you drop a big dude every turn and smash face. Sometimes you have night pack or overrun and pwn them that way.

Green is also sweet because you can get the civic wayfinder guy (2/2 for 2G lets you search library for a land), so you can splash all the red/black removal.

bold: same can be said for tendrils/consume spirit

italicized: I don't see what is so bad about mono-green. Your creatures are bigger than theirs.

underlined: mono-black, mono-white, mono-green are all fine. you can 3-0 with these. mono-red/mono-blue however is quite bad.

This is definitely true, although it is very hard to draft Mono Green or Mono White. Mono Black is possible, and is really really good, but it can still be a challenge.

tendrils is common

getting a good mono black deck is a lot easier than getting good mono white or green decks because you can get all of your good black cards fairly late (except this new terror obv) where white and green cards are simply more popular for other players because they are more flexible

In large swiss events, after drafting, do you play 3 rounds within the draft pod, or is it just normal swiss across the field including the other tables?

Unless things have changed in the last couple years, Limited GPs have sealed day one, where you can play anyone in the room with your record. Day 2 you draft your deck and play within your pod for 3 rounds. Next you are assigned a new pod based on standings and draft again and play within you pod for last 3 rounds.

Total newb question here but I forget. When drafting do you make 40 card or 60 card decks.

Google FTW.

OK, so do you make 40 card decks since thats the minimum usually?

yeah, 40 cards.

40 min - no max
Magic: The gathering Online Quote

No max, but you should find the best 40, because anything else just dilutes average card quality.

Yea, I figured it was like Standard where 60 is the min and no one plays over 60. Except this is 40.

What would you recommend for someone to do who has played probably about 50 games before with friends casually and wants to play MTG:Online.

I'm downloading the program now, not sure where to start.
