Which packs should I be buying? How do sets rotate out? Should I just be buying Guilds of Rav? Obv if I have a deck in mind it could influence the decision, but I don't, so what should I be doing here?

Thanks for any advice. I realize I can search the interwebs but I trust you guys.
Unless you hate drafting or have more money than you know what to do with, you should draft instead of ripping packs.

Thank you. I'm generally ass at drafting. I feel like I'm always torn between grabbing stuff I want and grabbing stuff that will help me win more.

No need to rare draft with the collection building system imo.

There is sealed too, though a bit expensive compared to draft, but you get a lot of packs I think.

If you want to improve at drafting, watch Ben Starks videos on channelfireball.com on the relevant draft format.

nothing wrong with buying packs to get jump started into constructed if you want to play it and have limited time

theres no discount for buying in bulk so you can spread out packs among sets. if you want to drop 50 bucks or so id recommend mainy dominaria since ravnica is the newest set and they give away packs of it as rewards often. its a very strong set and you can pull the dual land rares that you need for constructed

this is a great time to get into magic, the rotation of sets was just a week ago so everything available will be legal in standard for the next year+

Yeah I just dropped 50 which is not a big deal to me for something that is going to give me hours of entertainment. I really like the wildcard system, although I'm not going to be burning rares and mythic wildcards anytime soon. Was able to piece together a pretty cheap deck I saw someone make on Youtube that looked pretty fun to play. I'll use that to grind out a bit and get used to the game. It's so weird coming from Hearthstone and knowing literally everything and now not knowing what any of the cards are or what they do. It's fun though. I spent a really long time opening packs and reading the cards etc.

Thanks again. I'll have more time to mess around with it this weekend.

Lord: here is an overview of the standard metagame (on MODO) if you want to pick a deck to work towards.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard#paper

I think there is a pro tour in 1 week, where they play new standard, so you might want to wait until then to commit to something.

I just noticed the price structure in Competitive Metagame challenge, it is hilarious 7 wins gets you 2,5 buy ins and 30 packs, but 1 loss and you are out. Better get that tier 1 deck fast lol.

I've been playing quite a lot last few days after reinstalling it for open beta.
I didn't like the closed beta state and played very few games back then but I think they did a good job improving the client so far and it's very playable.
I'm a complete noob still unlocking the free packs and I got the 5$ bundle that was good value.
I played 3 drafts so far (1st one with gold) and went 2 wins,3 wins ,5 wins.
All core set drafts which are cheap and easier for new player I think.
I make a lot of mistakes ,misunderstand some mechanics ,expect different effects from cards , can't read either but this is getting really addictive .
I have no interest to play constructed so the lack of collection is not a problem.
Drafting looks cheaper than I thought , even if you don't go infinite you can get away with 50cents drafts around 3/4 wins I guess.

Coming from hearthstone this is refreshing.

How is that refreshing? In hearthstone you can go infinite arena which I think is much better

Refreshing as in playing another game than hearthstone.
Funny it's the older game but mtgo client turned me off and all the mtg spin off (duels) seemed too limited at the time ,so I never bothered trying magic.
I'm not ****ting on hearthstone btw ,I just played it too much and am happy there is this alternative now.

Spoiler:
pls don't be mad

Hearth is kinda the poor man's magic and Hearth is much more noob friendly. You will find that magic has a much more specific way that it works, granted there are a few wonky interactions here and there. It is very easy to learn magic incorrectly when you play brick and mortar. Online it generally works a very specific (correct) way.

I'd suggest playing boros (white red aggro) or white lifegain tokens if you are making a contructed deck. If you willing to lose some money drafting, not sure which archetype to suggest, but its fun and can be expensive if you suck. Just a warning.

The only thing I don't really like about Arena is that the yields are really stupid sometime. Control button is your friend if you need to time a specific sequence of actions.

Just started playing MTGA after reading this thread... Lose do to miss click is definitely annoying, gotta get use to that. Sealed feels super fun. too bad we dont get to keep the card we open.

Just to be sure before I crack my packs... I cannot use them for limited play like in MTGO right? MTGA packs are meant to be open?

edit: oh wait, we are keeping our sealed pool in the collection. I have so much more to learn about this addictive game.. Can we dismentel/craft card like HS? Also what are wildcard?

You can indeed craft cards with wildcard. There is no melting of card, but if you can a 5th of something you get some wildcard value instead.

Might be the grossest deck I've ever drafted.

I dislike the 4 mana counter.

How do you like Mesmerist?

I feel like the bots underate Darkblade Agent, or maybe I just like it a lot.

Had a semi terrible Golgari draft, went 0-1 and expected 0-2 but pulled of the 5-0, after first match I pulled out some spells, threw in all 2 and 3 drop creatures and prayed for curve out wins. (Had the 4/4 troll, that is pretty bonkers when they don't have removel) But most wins was just dropping cratures turn 2-5 and attacking, with how clunky Dimir decks often are it worked very well.

Game is real fun but looks like it will be pretty expensive outside of the awesome value starter pack thing. Any tips for drafting?

Also, is there really no friends list or in game chat? Gotta assume that is a priority at some point right? Plus needs to come out on mobile ASAP, with TESL dying and HS garbage for years I have no go-to mobile game. I guess I could remote login to desktop but thats super clunky.

Can’t remember if you tried Eternal but it plays well on mobile. I’m kind of tired of it but the drafting component is still worthwhile. I’m also interested in getting into MTG if i can play on my iPad.

I crafted this deck after a week completing the new player quests and with help of the 5$ welcome bundle and a few core drafts later.
It's one of the cheapest and I'm still missing some cards so I did with what I had so far.

2 Vraska, Relic Seeker (XLN) 232
7 Swamp (RIX) 194
6 Forest (RIX) 196
4 District Guide (GRN) 128
3 Dryad Greenseeker (M19) 178
4 Golgari Findbroker (GRN) 175
2 Jadelight Ranger (RIX) 136
4 Ravenous Chupacabra (RIX) 82
3 Cast Down (DAR) 81
2 Vraska's Contempt (XLN) 129
3 Moment of Craving (RIX) 79
1 Dead Weight (GRN) 67
2 Evolving Wilds (RIX) 186
1 Golgari Guildgate (GRN) 249
2 Memorial to Folly (DAR) 242
4 Woodland Cemetery (DAR) 248
2 Overgrown Tomb (GRN) 253
2 The Eldest Reborn (DAR) 90
1 Carnage Tyrant (XLN) 179
2 Reclamation Sage (M19) 196
1 Llanowar Elves (DAR) 168
1 Thorn Lieutenant (M19) 203
1 Vraska, Golgari Queen (GRN) GR8

2 Duress (M19) 94
1 Blood Operative (GRN) 63
1 Vicious Rumors (GRN) 89
2 Kitesail Freebooter (XLN) 110
2 Mind Rot (M19) 109
1 Fell Specter (M19) 96
1 Blood Divination (M19) 86
1 Vona's Hunger (RIX) 90
1 Creeping Chill (GRN) 66
1 Twilight Prophet (RIX) 88
2 Vampire Sovereign (M19) 125

its golgari themed where you bring back your creatures from graveyard infinitely.
My sideboard is pretty much all the good cards left I could fit in since my collection is really limited now.
I also looked for variations on this page https://magic.wizards.com/en/article...gue-2018-10-04

basically looked for the deck with the less mythics ,like i put vraska golgari queen cause I had it but its not mandatory, same with carnage tyrant I just had it.

I've since copied a couple decks from here :

https://pennydreadfulmagic.com/

The first one cost like 70 cents and I think the second one cost like $1.5 or something. Great bang for the buck.
