lol i have no idea what they're doing. Everyone is just going to play Saheeli. Glorybringer makes the deck a lot stronger. They can even run Manglehorns main to wreck Mardu game 1 since it stops infinite Felidar Guardians and there's no third deck in the format.

I wish I could play a deck with Censor in it, I love that card and I think it's great.

I've been playing Magic since Masques and had never quit standard. I even played during Mirrodin and tried to find ways to beat affinity (spoiler: couldn't). I quit standard after the last B&R said no changes because the 1-2 punch of Vehicles and Saheeli combo just killed any other potential decks from being viable. They pushed the hell out of vehicles cause they wanted them to be successful and it's just really hard to beat a 2 mana serra angel and Gideon (it's very similar to when they created equipment and left us with Plating + Skullclamp). If you do find ways to do so, you're have to do so in a way that folds to the combo. Since it's a two deck format, you basically can build a new deck to beat one of the two and lose to the other one, then hope you randomly get paired vs the one you beat a lot. It's a shame, because there are a lot of cool build arounds in this formats that just don't even have a chance.

I understand that they don't want bans to be common. It was something like 5-6 years since the last ones. The solution isn't to ignore the problem and hope it goes away though.

edit: according to mtggoldfish, vehicles/saheel is like 74% of the meta.

Well, I guess I'll just play Saheeli. Playing the deck IS fun.

Pretty clear it's just straight corporate politicking at this point. There's no rational assessment you can make of standard that doesn't include a combo ban at least one of the last two b&r announcements.

I genuinely believed they were just going to hold till this announcement date to juice sales on the new set release.

Wild speculation, Sam Stoddard seems to be responsible for the latest strategic down turns in standard, he couldn't admit his mistake and thus we are left with combo until the numbers get bad enough the higher ups can't ignore it and he's fired. Fortunately, it doesn't seem like that will take very long.

guardian emergency banned

turns out theyve COLLECTED THE DATA

standard is saved

Welp now they banned it. Feel bad for anyone who bought the deck after the banned and restricted announcement.

Quote:
Why are we making this call now and why didn't we make it in our regular B&R announcement on Monday? The answer is data.
...
Saheeli-Felidar's win-loss ratio and metagame share has actually increased since the release of Amonkhet. In Magic Online Standard Leagues since Monday, Saheeli combo has made up approximately 40% of 5-0 and 4-1 decklists—up from prior to Amonkhet's release.
lol what bull****. Two days of league data when half the people are playing unrefined meme decks. Yeah I'm sure that's why you decided to act.

i dont. people had to know best case it gets banned in five weeks and everyone hates you for those five weeks

league data is tons and tons of games. looking at the pro tour is nothing compared to a few days of leagues

Well I bought the deck on mtgo to play for month. They really screwed me.

My guess it they were seeing financial down turns, low league turnout and WPN pressure. Plus it was some seriously bad PR, the pros who should be marketing them were telling people not to play standard.

Did you actually lose money? I'm seeing all cards up on MTGO that you would have bought (Ballista, Chandra, Nahiri, Glorybringer, Heart, etc.) except for Saheeli, so worst case you're out like $30 - your profits?

I only bought the old Saheeli list. Was going to wait few more days for the rest. Not sure what Mardu Vehicles cards have to do with this, I wasn't going to get that deck. (Ballista is btw going down, it was played in mardu exactly because it was decent vs Saheeli. All Saheeli cards too, Chandra and Nahiri have both lost a lot.)

chandra has only dropped 2 tix and nahiri is the same on mtggoldfish

ballista should be fine I think (at least not tank). its still a great card in mardu and maybe BG could return since it was good vs mardu and bad vs saheeli. plus its played in the older formats

I played a traditional BG delirium list this morning because I suspected people would go crazy on PWs and wanted to run Mindwracks. Looking solid so far, only problem this list would have is if Marvel becomes the real deal (but we also got Dispossess). New Liliana is very strong. Ran 2x Ballista and wanted 3. Just a good magic card, plus it's played in all formats.

Seeing a ton of Manglehorns main deck, seems like Mardu lists are going to have to innovate a bit.

I've got that playoff coming up on the 20th. Never played a match of standard in my life. Sooooo... what's gud? Anyone feel like lending a tier 1 deck for tix collateral?

Mardu Vehicles is the only proven t1 deck right now, we'll know more after the pro tour

PT is next weekend, just play one of the best decks from there or a deck that beats PT's best deck.

Yeah no point trying to get into it now, just re-evaluate after the PT.

Makes sense, thanks guys. I've drafted for decades at this point (sigh) but this is a new experience for me. I'll youtube some of the streams to see how the decks play and check back in.

Standard's pretty sweet at the moment.

Here's the breakdown I've seen so far:
-Mardu and other aggro loses hard to traditional BG Delirium
-BG Delirium loses hard to Marvel variants
-Marvel variants unfavored against control, maybe favored against aggro
-Control loses to Mardu

Temur Marvel seems best to me, hard to build and play though. Don't know much about Zombies or the New Perspectives combo so not factoring those in.

Is this just for online magic? If not can we rename this thread to just Magic The Gathering and combine the two threads? Online is just online. I know people play offline...

Don't think anyone would have a problem if you posted about paper.

Here's a Sultai Marvel list I just 5-0'd a comp league with, deck is sweet and very fun:

Offline one is in the board games chess section.

You know how some players pose with their winning hands in poker when they win a tournament? Would be cool if Magic players did this with their cards or just whatever cards are left in their hand (if any).
