Need some suggestions for either XBOX One or PC.

I have had an XBOX for about 4 years now and would like to find a game to entertain me this winter. I have only played a couple of games since I got it. I quickly discovered I really HATE first person shooters. I am a spaz with the controller and prefer something slower paced and I also just prefer a trailing or 3rd person view.

The first 2 years on XBOX I played Forza Horizon 2 (racing game) and loved it and played it at least a little every day. Then when Horizon Forza 3 came out I was equally enamored and played it for 2 years almost a little every day. Then last month Forza Horizon 4 came out and it sucks balls. The 2 things I like to do in Horizon were the online racing and rivals (time attack) and for some reason they changed these core features drastically which made the game a huge disappointment for me. So what I had hoped and expected to scratch my gaming itch for the foreseeable future isn't gonna do it.

Back in the day I did play a few PC games. I played Asheron's Call (mmorgp) for about 15 years from day one until they shut down the servers. Other games I really liked were System Shock and Age of Empires. I am very loyal to a game once I like it and don't really mind grindy repetition.

So what I am looking for is some sort on 3rd person view action/adventure/rpg type of game that is more open ended for either the XBOX or PC. Just wondering if anyone knows of anything along these lines?

I’m guessing Red Dead Redemption 2 would fit that bill. Also maybe The Witcher 3.

Red Dead Redemption 2 really does sound perfect for you.

The dead-eye system really simplifies the shooting aspect of the game. It also has a much more relaxed pace than most shooting games you can easily spend a few hours just hunting and tracking a perfect beaver pelt and enjoy every minute of it. There is just so much to do in the game as well. At one point I actually went a full week without playing any of the main story missions and still didn't run out of things to do before I decided to do some more of the story.

Another suggestion since you mentioned AoE is check out They Are Billions. An RTS in which you build and upgrade a defensive fortress to hold off zombies for a set amount of time. It is still in early access with a campaign mode being released sometime next year, but the survival mode is insanely addictive. I have over 200 hours in the game already.

Could do divinity games, XCOM and I'm sure you could read the steam thread for some PC games.

Thanks so far for the recs. The steam thread is quite intimidating at over 21K posts I did google They are Billions and was directed to steam. Prior to this I had no idea what steam was or is. Still fuzzy on it but I am an old! I guess that is where you get PC games nowadays as I was growing frustrated trying to find PC games but that steam has everything it seems. I have been out of the PC game buying market for a couple of decades and had no idea how much it has changed and transformed into a one stop for everything download market.

I always likesd getting the box with the manual and directions and such. This may be why I dislike many of the XBOX games as I have no clue how to play them, they generally have no instructions or tutorials and drop you into a hostile environment without a clue.

I have a couple of (older) friends who despise Steam, but I love the convenience and selection and just the general ease of use. Sometimes the pricing is a bit out of whack but you can really find some great deals especially during the summer sale or around the holidays (starting around now actually). It's a great place to pick up games you meant to play a few years back but never got around to and often get a killer deal to boot.

If you played acherons call for 15 years then you should totally play elder scrolls online. It's one of the few mmos designed specifically for console (ffiv is the other but it is $15/month). I played Acheron's Call beta in college sophomore year. Alls I really remember about that game is something about poplar and never really figuring out any useful spells.

age of empires 2 still has a pretty decent sized community. although they play on a 3rd party platform called voobly now rather than aoe2 HD. check out T90official on twitch or youtube to see some AOE2 gameplay..

I would still play AOE2 if I could figure out how to play it on Windows 10. Once I updated it no longer worked?

https://isthereanydeal.com/ is a good place to see what is on sale at reputable sellers.

If you get from key sellers/resellers, you're doing at least one of the follow: ripping off devs, buying stolen goods, or helping launder money.

Could check out /r/steamswap to buy directly from players. Small chance scam might happen.

To clarify, G2A and I think CDKeys are resellers who you shouldn’t use. Fanatical is a good third party site. I can’t remember GreenManGaming, I think they used to be bad but have made changes since.

I didn't want to single out sites since i could be wrong.

GMG should be fine.

Cjskeys and kinguin are bad too, i believe.

Well, thanks to this thread I researched a little and ended up buying AOE2 HD on Steam. My 20 year old AOE2 discs won't work But the Steam version works on Windows 10. Boy am I rusty! I always sucked playing it online but it can be fun to roll over the AI so I will waste a bit of time with this one.

Honestly people like baseball are why I love this forum.

Just a casual dude who wants to play some video games and deriving such joy from it. I love it so much.

I bought They Are Billions this week as well. Seems like something I will like but as of now I am pretty clueless how to play it. I need to do some reading up and learning from some online strategy tips and basic rules but it looks like it could be pretty addictive

It's all about time management. Get in the habit of every time you hear "building complete" pausing and thinking about your next move. After a few playthroughs you will start to figure how strong your base needs to be for each successive horde. Another tip that really helped me early on is always pause when placing buildings. You can remove misplaced buildings at no cost if the game is paused, but you only get partial resources back if time is running.
