It's easy to feel obligated with so many personal reviews abound, but you shouldn't grind through a game that you aren't enjoying.
Update: I'm deeming Factorio "complete" at this point.
I ended up going back in and, 100+ hours later, completed a 3000 science/min megabase based on my own 150x150 tile modular block design. The jump from 2000 to 3000 SPM resulted in significant FPS/UPS drops even with my rather beefy rig, so I'm calling it there. With the system I have set up, it would just be a matter of copy/pasting my way to infinity science/min, but there's no real point and the game engine would implode long before then.
I can see now how some people sink many thousands of hours into this. Particularly with some of the mods I've seen mentioned. My assumption is that the people with 10,000+ SPM bases in vanilla are just much much better than I was at optimization. My run was mostly modless except for the aircraft mod, which I would never play without after experiencing it, and some tiny QOL ones like sneakthrough and free red/green wires via an interface button.
Call me a Factorio convert now. I'll use what I've learned to give it another playthrough when the expansion releases.
