Anything decent on the Steam sale? All I've picked up so far is some of the ETS2 DLC I don't have

Cool! However, I'm not convinced with those control placements. Also, I'm assuming it's streaming and linux based..

Yeah, it definitely looks cool. I'm certainly not the market for it, but more choices for PC gaming is always a good thing.

Fast local storage means you can download titles, but you won't get much done with the base model on that front. There are plenty of small indie titles, but modern AAA games are stupidly large.

Streaming on your local network from a primary PC works pretty flawlessly with their current tech, so I imagine this will be at least as good as that.

I'm also not the target audience, but I hope they sell millions of them.

Can you run Steam on the latest Xbox and PS consoles?

Edit: That was a better question for Google, who says, "no."

I think people are going to go bananas for this because it's Valve but I don't really get it. It's a bit of a beast and I am confused what it offers compared to a phone + telescopic controller. Especially if it is mostly just going to be used for streaming, etc, and is not a windows device making the windows game library accessible natively.

I don't know how to read /what to make of these specs though. Like, does this compare to a $600 budget tower build?

You say that, but people didn't really go bananas for Steam Machines.

I think it was because of the steep price. I have an Alienware Alpha R1 version and I love the form factor. At Christmas I bought an adapter that allows a modern graphics card to plug into the WIFI card interface.

I also use it for my VR setup.

But one thing I learned is that you need to dump the linux steam interface and put Windows on it. Games run 2x faster.

It's not mostly a streaming device, though of course it can stream things. It has lots of local power, roughly comparable to a PS4 in the GPU (while only needing to drive 1280x800), it can even do raytracing. A 4c8t modern AMD Zen CPU, 16GB RAM. 512GB of NVME SSD storage in the top model. It's a full PC.

It does run Linux, a new version SteamOS 3.0. This has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years, a new compatibility translation layer (Proton), and now runs most any Windows game without much issue, main exceptions being ones containing anti-cheat (which they aim to address by release). Usually with very minor performance penalty, sometimes with a performance advantage. I'd think each title on Steam will be tagged with a Proton profile suitable for the Steam Deck so it'll run things without manual fiddling.

Of course, it's a proper PC so you can format the OS and install Windows too if you prefer!

Well, 512GB version pre-order in but Steam was erroring badly for an hour so nowhere near the front of the queue!

Man the 512 version is showing Q3 2022 on steam website. Q2 for the others.

I have no need for a portable device, but if I was, I would probably be getting the 256GB one and hoping that the NVMe is replaceable. $120 more to still only be at 512GB is awful when you can get a 1TB for NVMe for $120.

There was a reddit post that the m2 ssd is indeed accessible and replaceable. (Confirmed by Gabe himself)

Is this potentially bad news imo if it takes off in a big way?

Consoles were a drag on the true power of the chosen gaming one (PC) for ages.

Something that actually runs PC games made by the primary distribution source of PC games seems like it could do even more damage in this regard.

Or maybe those factors mitigate any possible damage.

I don't really see the appeal, despite the fact that I would love to have a mobile option to play my Steam library. How are most of these PC games going to translate to a handheld experience? Not well I feel.

Seems like a Surface Pro with a controller is a way better investment imo.

Looks like that probably wouldn't hurt for some of the higher end games. Seems to work for 99% of the stuff I want to play though.

Awesome glad to hear it! What type of build did you run?

I went for a balanced approach 4/3/2/3 with Logic as a signature skill

ultimately I found Psyche the most useful ability, so if I decide to replay it I might start with something like 4/5/1/2 or 4/5/2/1 which better reflects my alcoholic empat character
