GreedFall looks pretty good for a game I've never heard of before. Looks like a mix of Dragon Age, Witcher and Assassin's Creed Black Flag.

Picked up FF XIV a few weeks ago and this may be the best MMO I've ever played.

There is a ton to do, the story line is good and the duty finder (which puts together random parties for the dungeons) is actually working surprisingly good. I was very skeptical about having forced dungeons with randoms for the main story line, but they've been nothing but good so far (level 30 with a fair number of random dungeons thrown in).

Wow, FF Online. I'm suddenly reminded of GM Dave http://bannable-offenses.blogspot.com/.

Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

I very much have no clue what that's all about.

Old school blog from back in the day, a GM for FF Online airing his grievances anonymously. His big shtick was feeding players to Jormungand before banning them.

Aha. Tbh I still have no clue, but I believe the current FFXIV is a new and improved version from what was around back then.

Either way - it's pretty awesome

Any of you guys play Oxygen Not Included? I wasn’t interested that much during the sale so I missed it but the more I read about it and watch some videos, the more I want to play it.

I've been playing ONI on and off over the last year or so. It's got a decent learning curve. However, the learning is the best part of the game. Figuring things out while keeping your dupes alive is rewarding. If you watch a bunch of twitch feeds, learn all the tricks, I assume the game will lose a lot of it's interest.

I think of it as a more forgiving RimWorld.

Picked up ONI a year or two ago - I liked it a lot but it just gets stupid hard once you get a (short) while into a playthrough. I put it aside hoping they'd balance it a bit more before release, but having read a few reviews after the release now it seems like they're going with the "always-a-crisis-really-hard"-mode as the general gameplay.

I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy it, but I tend to enjoy the building rather than the constant panic of trying to prevent what you've done collapsing all the time.

Edit: I struggled a lot less, and had a lot more fun, with Rimworld. But that has options to tone down the "stupid hard".

I really didn't like Rimworld when I first bought it. Tried to refund it two times. When Steam denied me, I just uninstalled. That was the main reason why I didn't really look too far into Oxygen Not Included.

Releasing it from early access and being on sale, I started looking into it a little more. People compare it to a mix between Factorio and Rimworld and having a high degree of engineering. Something like Factorio and engineering interests me. I also was reading that it's the constant prevention of something breaking.

I reinstalled Rimworld today and jumped into a peaceful game to see if it started clicking with me. Subnautica turned me off with the constant having to go and find food and water and I just never went back to it even though that has the peaceful mode too, I think. I like games where you start fresh with a world and then create something from it like Factorio and Satisfactory, and even the building and gathering aspect of Rimworld. Tending to the colonists in Rimworld is sort of annoying, like it's hot out so you have to force them into a cool building, and then they're hungry, and then they don't have enough recreation, and then they cry and need sleep, and then they aren't happy because the floor isn't built out..etc. It's constantly managing their needs. haha

I don't know, I'm a sucker for talking myself into playing a game and then not finishing it. And if I do end up buying it, then I want to avoid getting too far into watching youtube videos. I kind of feel like I regret not just grabbing it during the sale.

I've been enjoying random simulation/tycoon games from Humble Bundle purchases. Tried 911 Operator from a recently Monthly and it's not bad. Just dug up Big Pharma from a bundle I bought a couple years ago and it's cool.

I suspect there won't be a whole lot of replay value, but they are certainly keeping me busy and I paid peanuts for them.

I don't remember if it was from Humble Bundle, but Game Dev Tycoon is quite fun.

Hey Kabong, I'm a guy with >0 programming experience and always wanted to make a video game. I started trying to make a CSS game to start learning some skills and got stuck trying to get my scout CSS server working. Ultimately I'd like to make some kind of browser based or cell phone game, maybe like html 5 based. I'd be happy to explain my concept which is pretty well thought out. I know a lot about business and understand my monetization model. Probably if you heard the concept you'd say it was too big or that the scope was not defined enough.. this is probably somewhat true. I have database, web server and network administrator experience in a professional setting, so I'm really not super noob, just no video game experience. Suggestions?

Yeah Unity is my engine of choice and what I always suggest to beginners. It uses C# so you're still going to need to learn programming before you can do anything substantial though. Without knowing anything about your game the fact that you're already talking about a business model and monetization tells me that your scope is too big for a first game.

My suggestion is download Unity, do as many Unity and C# tutorials as possible and make a bunch of little games and clones. Simple stuff like space invaders, brick breaker, flappy bird etc and then try and expand on ideas and implementing different systems. Don't throw yourself straight into the deep end.

I know many of you love Paradox Games, but as a casual player I've come to loathe them and will probably never buy their stuff again.

They sure are great games, but I was just looking at EU4 again and I'm something like 6 exp packs (the big ones i mean, not flavor packs) behind and they all cost 20€ a pop. Same with Stellaris where I need something like 50-60€ of stuff.

Sure, I could just play Vanilla, but it still pisses me off. So I choose to not play at all. And they double down by having ******ed bundles that don't take out stuff you already have. They can't be bothered to give you a stupid 10% discount without having to buy stuff you already have. **** them. I just can't justify buying into their games as a casual player anymore.

Just treat them as MMORPG and the pricing won't bother you.

For Crusader Kings 2, what are the "must have" downloads that makes the font and map easier to read/view?

Ya that paradox has basically 5 different interlocking games that each have a treadmill of expansions is nuts. Don't give them money, buy from the key scammers and save yourself a few dollars. Never buy their games when they are not DEEPLY onsale. Saying just play without the expansions is not really a great solution. The vanilla versions seem to be well supported, but if you mix and match expansions its like playing socks but no shoes and watch with no shirt. Can you imagine playing EU4 with all of the dlcs except the one that allows development? There are 12 basically essential features like this, all in different expansions, that totally change the dynamic of the game. Some are not so important but will lead to really bizarre setups that over emphasis certain aspects. Thats not even getting into the fact that achievements are astronomically easier with all of the DLC than without. I'm not an achievement farmer, but just saying.

Just noticed Terry Cavanagh (the author of VVVVVV or Super Hexagon) released a new game. Probably worth checking out:

Zachtronics did, too, though it's described as a "visual novel" so it seems like not quite a game: http://www.zachtronics.com/eliza/

Paradox sells $200 games that you can put 1000 hours into without touching the sides. It's a pretty good value proposition but yeah they could be a bit more open about it.
