I thought I typed that out this morning, but must've not clicked reply.

My comment was "Without watching the gameplay, was this game inspired by Overcooked?"

Did you ever write a big One More Jump postmortem / devblog anywhere? Still the only game I have on my phone lol.

(I could swear I've asked about this game/genre in here before, but searching for numerous key words I can't find it)

One of my favorite parts of Cities: Skylines was trying to design road systems to ease traffic jams - Train Valley was an interesting transport puzzler in a similar vein, as well. Curious what other games are like that.

I finally picked up Transport Fever for like $15 on sale, and it's pretty fun so far. I never played Railroad Tycoon so idk how hardcore that game was, but TF seems, like, the Microsoft Flight Simulator kind of game over the, say, Pilotwings 64/Crimson Skies kind - there's lots of details to manage, and it feels a little overwhelming at first but the tutorial + googling stuff helps you figure most of it out. There's tons of freedom in how you lay out your network (roads/railways) over terrain, and the changing technology over time keeps gameplay somewhat fresh over the first 3-4 levels, which take a couple hours each (more if you want to replay for all achievements).

It turns out that designing a big rail network that fails catastrophically if I haven't set up an elaborate network of opaque signals is exactly the kind of game I was looking for!

Yeah. We're definitely going for the same vibe as Overcooked but the actual gameplay is very different. It's a bit more like a co-op platformer with a few puzzles here and there.

Thanks, nah still haven't done that but I definitely still have it on the backlog. I've got a lot to write about with the Switch port and then back to mobile again. I'll hopefully get to it eventually and share. Nice you still got OMJ on there

I played my first game of Subnautica. It looks beautiful. I died within 5-10 minutes though. I didn't quite know what to do so I tried swimming to the space ship wreck where I was killed by an attacking fish and maybe radiation. It was already pretty late so I called it a night instead of trying again.

Am I supposed to figure out what to do by myself or it there some in-game tutorial or guide that I missed? I don't mind a challenge if it is the former.

Been awhile since I played, but from what i remember once you get the materials for your repair tool and repair the radio you start to get messages from other possible survivors. Go to those areas and you will find data pads that further extend the story. Make sure you search the areas of the survivors pretty good. You will find blueprints for better equipment and rare materials.

Check the fabricator in your escape pod for recipes of what you can make and their ingredients. Fix and build stuff and the story will unfold naturally.

A bit of patience and a lot of exploration is all that is needed

You can choose yourself. There's an ironman mode which has permadeath, but the regular game you'll spawn back at your base (possibly losing some items, though only stuff you've picked up since last leaving the base) when you die.

I started playing a day or two ago and it's really addicting. I kind of wish there was some sort of explanation of what to do, but I guess figuring it all out is part of the fun.

The game does a great job at making you feel nervous and alone. Ending up in the middle of a deep part of the ocean with nothing around you is very disconcerting.

It very much is - one of the things Subnautica does so well is giving just enough clues to find and follow the story, while never pushing it. It still manages to always give some goal to chase, whether it be just crafting a piece of equipment or searching for some location.

I love how well it balances safety and danger - you've got the places where you know you're safe and you can potter about and do what you want, but you also know to progress you have to venture out into dangerous places.

RPS did a great piece on that: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...ng-safe-place/

I'm a huge fan of survival-games and this is by far my all time favourite of the genre. It does everything right.

Thanks for the heads up on Subnautica. Been wanting to check it out for a while. Not much of a survival fan but something about this interests me and looking forward to checking it out.

My biggest knock on Subnautica is the terrain wall/floor detection. You can easily fall through the world floor and end up somewhere that can really screw over your game. Esp if it's your sub that gets clipped through the floor.
