Someone found a way to find extract game sales using a bug in the global achievement tracker API for lifetime Steam sales. Ars has an
article and an
archived version of the csv since Valve patched the bug.
Some of the numbers are way higher than I would have thought, like GTA V at 12.6 mil, though almost all of the top ones are Valve game with TF2 at 50.2 mil. I'd love to see a break down of some top titles (non-EA or Ubisoft published) and how the sales compare between the consoles and PC. Dark Souls 3 at 3.2 million seems like it has to be the highest selling platform, since they announced 3 million global sales a few months after release and that's when console games have like 90% of their lifetime sales.
EDIT: from the article, it's not clear if the global achievement percentages take into account all users who own the game but may not have installed or played it, or only the subset who have installed the game, or just the ones that have earned at least one achievement. And achievements were only added in somewhere around 2010. And finally achievements may be added after launch, so these numbers are probably low for a lot of titles.
