No cheating. I just savaged Guided Javelin 1 cycles too.

I like optimizing the earlier levels better

Xcom 2 is much much better than Xcom1, its basically Xcom1 turned up to 11, nearly all reviews I have read mirror this opinion which is definitely a very strong consensus.

It has much much much much much better maps, Xcom1 uses pre rendered maps from a pool, they get old, Xcom2 has procuderally generated maps and they really work, much better weapons, better perks, much better enemy diversity, better mission diversity, better story, it just has better everything.

It also has much more strategic choice and flexibility at the strategic layer, Xcom1 basically had very concrete on rails optimum choices you had to take to hope to win on higher difficulty levels.

The turn thing can seem like an intrusion but really its good game design, it forces a pace into the game and stops the player using an unbeatable sneak and turtle strategy.

Xcom 2 was game of the year for me.

With NMS as close second I assume.

wafer close second.

Most of the utubz lists I have seen putting Xcom 2 in top 10 games of the year have put NMS in top 10 worst games tho.

I am in the middle of playing an XCOM1 Long War campaign. If there was a turn limit most missions would simply be unbeatable.
Just the other day there was a bomb defusal mission where the first half-move triggered two pods. One was an Ethereal with Muton Elites, the second was a Mechtoid with some support critters.
It's late game so with unlimited turns this is a solvable situation. With a ticking bomb it's game over.
The regular mission have meld containers to discourage the sneak and turtle strategy early on.

I am looking forward to playing XCOM2 after I finished Long War. Please assure me the turn timer is balanced.

Damn that's a strong review, I may have to shell out the $12 after all since you seem to address all the issues I had with the first game (seemed like finding the 'best' path was rewarded versus flexibility in strategies) and why I pretty much only played it with the Long War mod.

Tried to slog through Xcom 1 and I'm just not a fan, moved on in my backlog but I do have infinifactory now. BRING IT ON.

Agree with all these points.
I also agree about the timed missions not being a paid thing. They force you to use different strategies on different missions. Adds to the fun of the game, and forcing you not to just treat each mission the same way.
Not sure if XCOM-2 is my game of the year, but easy top 3.

Any opinions on the XCOM2 DLC?

Haven't gotten any myself. Reviews have been pretty mixed for both of them.

Shens last gift is said to throw in a really fun mission you will want to do once and not really ever again, and the reward is a class that becomes obsolete in mid to late game.

Alien hunters introduces the idea of Hive Queens, which are supposed to be super tanky enemies that are supposed to be fun, if frustrating, to kill off and if you get them at the wrong time during a camping can lead to a squad wipe.

I've decided to stick with mods for now until some universal praise hits for a dlc

From the XCOM 2 thread:

I got the DLC and it's definitely a lot better than the XCOM 1 DLC, all together it's probably like 75% of the content of the expansion. But it's a little bit lazy that SPARKs are literally just MECs, again, it feels like they took content out from EW and put it back.

As a design decision, though, gating the DLC content through optional missions is a mistake. The way XCOM works, you don't want to do missions. While you're playing you're hoping for no mission, hoping for guys to heal, waiting for the next tech or the next supply drop.

So I didn't start doing the DLC missions until mid-game, when the power curve starts to tilt your way, and they were all trivially easy.
The missions themselves are fun and interesting because they introduce new scripted stuff rather than the standard mission types, and some of the new gear from the alien missions does cool stuff, but like I said at the time you need to time them just right for balance issues.

Shen's last gift is one really fun mission and a new class that's pretty severely underpowered, the Alien stuff is a less fun mission, the queens who are going to be take-it-or-leave-it depending on how much it bothers you to randomly get difficulty spikes(I liked them), and some fun new one-off unique items that require a specific class and build to be useful, but if you have that build will be something you can use right to the end of the game.

Only thing I didn't like about XCOM 2 was the Avatar project timer thing, which effectively forces you to do missions when you don't want to. I ended up using a mod that extends the length of the timer because it was becoming more exhausting than fun.

tbh I wouldn't get XCOM2 if you don't want to play XCOM1 again. The games are extremely similar and the changes are very minor. However, if you haven't played XCOM1, you should skip it and go to XCOM2 right away since the game is slightly better.

I've just started playing infinifactory and it would be great to have other scores to compare myself to for motivation/to make myself feel inferior. My steam profile is http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198046341706/ if people are happy to add me.

This is just completely wrong imo.

I did not like Xcom 1 much, did not play lw though.

As said XCOM2 is my favourite game of the year.

Changes are very minor is well off, they completely reworked the strategic element of the game, maps are dynamic, etc etc.

The makers of Battleblock Theater have a new game, Pit People, coming out on Friday on Steam Early Access.

It's a turn-based, co-op, adventure (RTS, looks like). Looks nuts.
