Just going off memory but I'm pretty sure The Bureau was announced before EU although Bureau was originally an FPS.

I tried to play the bureau, even pre ordered because Xcom is so awesome. Mechanically the game really sucks. Story wise, who knows, I think I made it to the first real mission after you make it to HQ.

Oh, does dragon age: origins require EA Origins to play? Google not working right due to same name syndrome

Right. That's why everyone went crazy. We heard a new X com was in the works, and it turned out to be some generic looking fps, instead of the tbs we had always loved.

So everyone went haywire, somebody picked up the naming rights and made a turn based, and it turned out to be one of the best games of the year. I'm just curious if the naming rights and turn based idea were picked up before or after the outrage to the fps

Actually both games were developed simultaneously by different 2K studios who were in contact with each other. The difference is, EU was developed by Firaxis with a huge budget and The Bureau was developed by 3 smaller studios in 3 different countries with a clearly lower budget.

Thanks for the info. It's super weird to me that they would decide to unveil The Bureau first at E3 then.

Trying to decide if i should pull the trigger on that one. It looks very much like The Forrest (or does The Forrest look very much like it?).

Pulled the trigger on Banished and Wolfenstein. Early access is bad enough when it isn't an alpha. No thanks, 7dtd. Will wait to see how it plays out

How long does it usually take for games in alpha to reach full release? I almost never buy games in alpha, though i bought Prison Architect because people said it was pretty much fully functional.

How long have alphas been allowed in the steam store? Are there a lot of examples of alphas being sold on steam that developed into full releases?

There's no control by valve, just depends on how good the dev is

From what I have seen most of them just seem to stay in alpha and the only 1 or 2 I've seen get out got out really fast after being put up so they were clearly almost done anyway. I wouldn't buy one unless it has exceptional reviews and is something I am super excited about. Standards have to be higher when paying $15-$20 for games that aren't finished. Even more so given we end up paying $5 for almost every game in sales time and those games are finished.

I was just going to post this because I know people were looking at it. Seems like a sweet deal though I probably won't play it.

If it helps, I bought that and Eat, Serve, Delicious due to your recommendations. Haven't played Creeper World yet but have put a surprising amount of time into ESD.

Just throwing this in here because there's not a thread dedicated to it AFAIK, but I finally ****ing beat Dungeons of Dredmor. I could get to Dredmor no problem with just about any build, but killing him is a massive PITA unless you're specifically set up for it.

Finally nailed it with:

Promethian Magic (for Wyrmling and Tactical Pyre)
Mathemagic (for buffs, teleport, and Recursive Curse)
Magic Training (for License to Cast and more magic damage)
Leylines (for more mana, might not be essential)
Magical Law (for gag order)

+ two other skills that didn't matter. Just kept Dredmor silenced and kept a Wyrmling in front of him at all times, so I could ping him down without him attacking me.

The only one build will kill the end boss is a real problem with rogues.

It got stuck in development hell.

While looking for the various E3 presentations involving it, I found that Polygon wrote a much longer article about the changes it went through. The shooter was definitely supposed to come out first - though in retrospect, it's probably very good for sales that it didn't, because the shooter being ass would have submarined the sales of Enemy Unknown, but instead the bad shooter got a boost from the branding association with a very good strategy game.
