Europa Universalis IV: Greatest game of all time Europa Universalis IV: Greatest game of all time

What is 100% certain to be the greatest game ever made is currently under development and slated for release in late 2013.

Paradox has some developer diaries about the making of the game here with some good reads about what's going to be changed.

GET EXCITED!

Getting excited a year ahead of time isn't doing me any favors. Almost 400 hours in EU3 now.....

Dear EU4 AI,

Please do not troll me and/or needlessly implode like your little brother, the EU3 AI.

Sincerely,

(I've played way too much EU3 and I'm looking forward to playing even more EU4.)

Dear EU4 AI,

Please do not troll me and **** every possible **** up, changing everything i created, when I disconnect in a multiplayer game and you decide it's time to take control. Your little brother was a dick-face.

Sincerely,

someone who hates your little brother.

They need to team up with Total War team and make a grand strategy game with actual battles. Looking forward to EU IV

Looks hot so far

CK2 netcode has been good, though don't have as much experience multiplayering it. Can't really remember any serious crashing or connection issues though, so it's defo improved. Hope it stays good for EU4.

I remember in some of the other published material thus far that they're gonna be pretty ambitious with netcode support, including support for join-in-progress.

I proclaim this the new paradox game catchall thread. Been playing a vicky 2 on and off over the last few months, and I got some kool screenshots.

This is from an awesome alt-history mod http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/...gences-for-AHD that also includes a pop divided which is the GOAT vicky 2 mod.

Heres the world at the start of the game:

Heres the world in 1865 of my campaign, I started as Aragon and eventually formed Aragon-Italy:

Heres a screenshot of Europe:

Further zoomed in, showing the troops and battles of the Poland + Aragon vs Bohemia + Scandinavia war:
http://i.imgur.com/KCM3T.jpg

Bohemia is the current #1 power with a pretty huge industrial score. They are basically the Austria equivalent, they were HRE for a long time and have a rivalry for control of Germany with Burgundy.

Burgundy and Dual Monarchy are the other 2 superpowers at start. IIRC the history is that Burgundy allies w/ England and they crush France, Burgundy becomes independent kingdom, England takes the French crown, bam 2 new megapowers.

Other strong countrys at start are Aragon (Castille and Portugal unite to form Spain leaving independent Aragon which focused on Mediterranean empire, Scandinavia (big colonial empire at start), Spain, Gran Columbia, and Seven Provinces (New England area). Ottomans are also p strong but start 1/2 occupied by rebels and almost immediately collapse.

China starts split into multiple warring countries, as does Japan. With no UK domination, India has a few small states, a few small enclaves by European powers, and then 2 large competing countries in Mughal Empire and Vijay. The New World is similarly divided up between the Seven Provinces (former Burgundian colony), Vinland (former Scandiniavian colony), Plantagenia (French), Gran Columbia (Spanish), and Qingdao (Chinese). Plus some other random countries in South America I cant remember (maybe an Incan? IDK).

Anyways its a cool mod, they made it so theres no superpowers like UK/USA/Germany, and lots of competing powers in areas where there was 1 power dominating. Plus theres a ton of history backstory, and lots of decisions and event chains. For example, the country between me and Bohemia is Danube confederation, this games north german federation equivalent (cept its south german). There was some event where all the free german states had a meeting in Warsaw where they united under Bavaria forming a counter to Bohemia and Burgundy. Of course, Bohemia and Burgundy both immediately invaded the new country and took 2-3 states from it, leaving it very weakened and I quickly sphered it.

Moscow and Poland both ate Crimea, destroying it in 15 years or so. Moscow went on to crush Novgorod and form Russia and is now expanding east. Ottomans collapsed in a series of wars by all its neighbors, especially Hungary. I sphered all of Italy that I didn't initially own, then fought Dual Monarchy w/ my friend Burgundy to add Savoy to my sphere, allowing me to form Aragon-Italy. My sphere includes Hungary, Illyria, Danube, Macedonia, Greece.

Elsewhere, Bohemia and Burgundy have fought several wars for control of West Germany, and Poland has fought Scandinavia twice so far trying to get the Baltics. Seven Provinces were repeatedly crushed by Vinland/Plantagenia alliance but still is a great power due to huge immigration. Japan expanded like mad into Asia and Alaska.

PS: This mod would be epic for multi because of how many balanced countries there could be at start.

EU3 has a steep learning curve but it's definitely a blast. I personally didn't enjoy the CK2 demo all that much, and I've heard complaints about other games (like Vicky) in that they focus a lot more on economy stuff and are even more complex to learn, though I'm sure Nonfiction can elaborate on the differences better. But yeah, EU3 was the first one I played and this is the result:

Prolly EU3, CK2 really good too and was a lot of peoples first paradox game. Victoria is my favorite time period and my fav series but more complicated, with politics, more complex economy, and managing your pops. HOI3 I haven't played but the HOI series is usually thought of as the hardest (but also super fun).

Hearts of Iron 2 Armageddon is the one I enjoyed playing the most.

Edit: I also enjoyed playing EU3 and Victoria 2 but I think these two are more limited comparing to HoI2. I remember playing HoI2 and starting games from beginning hundreds of times because I figured out that researching Junkers should be my first priority or because equipping my troops with AA brigades is a waste of resources. For me, the best strategy games are the ones that take long time to master. I didn't feel that EU3 is one of those games. But otoh, I never play these games in multiplayer mode like most people here do.

EU3 is probably the best overall with the most breadth. CK2 is also excellent & easier to get into, but suffering from different issues every patch it seems. Vicky series has way too much micromanagement imo, wouldn't recommend for starting. HOI2 was good but has a dated engine/UI and the most complex combat by far; haven't played HOI3.

I lied, the CK2 netcode is still a pile of **** (when you play with NonFict)

Both CK2 and EU3 are playable for a new person since you can start out small and learn but still have a chance to build a big empire.

Vicky feels like I'm watching a simulation and my actions have no effect on anything. Maybe I still don't understand how to play it.

HOI is awesome on paper but I thought it was micromanagement hell. Nothing is abstracted away which sounds awesome but it takes hour and hours to do anything.

New dev diary focusing on Milan + the new concept of republican tradition. The last few dev diaries have been kinda lackluster imo but this one is pretty cool cause it's the first about a tier 3 power. Still excited for eu4 and still far far away :-(

Pretty underwhelming "Trailer", but at least a few seconds of pre-alpha (i suppose) footage of the gameplay.

The things I don't like in EU3 (I have pack with 2 expansions including DW) are all small. I've played a lot of this game single player (150 hours?). I haven't played any mods or multiplayer. It is totally possible these small things are fixed in mods. JMO!

The game lags hard when the autosave hits, which is annoying since so many things have to be paused quickly to be done properly. I think it would be nice if auto save kept the last 3 years saved up or something like that. (Can I have my cake and eat it too?)

I don't like how trade works. It is completely possible I am misunderstanding how it works. So lame to go bankrupt cause the auto send spams you broke for little reward.

Combat could be improved. It is so sick when someone just randomly runs up and routs your huge army in quick battle.

Obv the multiplayer setup is very bad and there should be some way to pub easier.

this game would be greatest of all time if they can implement the same combat system as the total war series. doubt that will ever happen though.

I love the Total War games and I love Paradox games. Both have their place, and no, they should not mix.
